Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s came out on the wrong side of their first PCL classic of 2018,
taking a 17-11 loss to the Albuquerque to fall to 1-6 on the season. The teams
combined to score in 12 of the 17 possible half-innings, but the 51s put just
one run on the board in five of those half-innings, while the Isotopes put a
crooked number on the board in all five half-innings they scored in. Because of
that disparity, the Isotopes were in control of this game by the end of the 3rd
and their relievers just needed to survive through the 9th. With so
much offense, clearly there were going to be stars on both sides, but Ty Kelly
easily had the best night by individual stats, finishing with four extra base
hits: a double, a triple, and two homers.
The
51s set the tone for this offensive slugfest with a four-run 1st. Ty
Kelly started his night with a triple and Dom Smith followed with an RBI double
to knock him in – the first of three extra base hits for Smith. Smith came home
on a Zach Borenstein RBI single. David Thompson followed with a single that
sent Borenstein to third base, and then Borenstein came home on a double steal.
Jose Lobaton capped the scoring with an RBI single to make it 4-0.
Unfortunately
for Las Vegas, that lead lasted just five batters into the bottom of the 1st.
51s starter A.J. Griffin was making his organizational debut after signing in
spring training and he really struggled. He walked three and allowed two
two-run homers in the 1st as the Isotopes quickly made this a 4-4
game.
Ty
Kelly put the 51s back on top with a solo blast in the 2nd.
Griffin
ran into two out trouble in the 2nd and the Isotopes jumped ahead
for the first time in the game. Drew Weeks singled to right field and then
Jordan Patterson and Noel Cuevas followed with RBI doubles to make this a 6-5
game.
Zach
Borenstein launched a massive solo blast in the 3rd to tie things
up. David Thompson followed with a double but was stranded at third in the
frame.
The
Isotopes knocked Griffin out in the 3rd and firmly took control of
this game with a 5-run frame. Most of the damage was actually done with David
Roseboom on the mound, after he took over with two on and one out. Roseboom
allowed a three-run inside-the-park homerun to Raimel Tapia and then a solo
blast to Drew Weeks as the Isotopes went up 11-6.
Roseboom's K |
Ty
Kelly launched another solo blast to make it 11-7 in the 4th. Dom
Smith followed with his second double of the game, but the 51s couldn’t get him
home.
Roseboom
had control issues in the 4th, walking three of the first four
batters he faced. The Isotopes only managed two singles in the frame, but they
added three runs to make this a 14-7 game.
Smith with the unassisted double play |
The
51s kept clawing their way back with another pair of runs in the 5th.
David Thompson singled Borenstein to third after he worked a leadoff walk, and
then Jose Lobaton singled Borenstein home. Matt den Dekker knocked Thompson in
with a two out RBI single later in the frame to make it 14-9.
Kelly
Secrest took over on the mound for Las Vegas in the bottom of the 5th,
but he couldn’t solve the Isotopes offense either. A HBP and an E5 put Secrest
in trouble before he could record an out, and both runners eventually came
around to score. Secrest did strikeout two in the frame, but the Isotopes were
up 17-9 by the time it was over.
Dom
Smith kept the ‘score-every-half-inning’ streak alive with a solo blast in the
6th to push the 51s score to double-digits.
Secrest
stuck around for the bottom of the 6th and worked the first
scoreless frame of the game.
The
51s had one last run in their bats and it came during the 7th, but
not before an ejection. Luis Guillorme was called out on strikes to start the
frame and he let his frustration with the umpiring be known, which home plate
ump John Bostwick did not appreciate. Guillorme’s frustration had built up over
the first two games of this series, as he had struck out five times, including
three times looking. Gavin Cecchini followed the ejection with a single, went
to second when den Dekker reached on catcher’s interference, and then came home
on Ty Kelly’s first double of the year. The 51s bats finally ran out of gas
after the Kelly double, as the final eight Las Vegas batters of the night went
down in order to end the game.
Tim
Peterson took over for Las Vegas in the 7th and worked around
another E5 for a scoreless frame with one strikeout. Matt den Dekker worked a
scoreless inning on the mound in the 8th, working around a walk and
HBP to do something few other actual pitchers had done that night (toss a
scoreless frame).
Looking
ahead, the 51s will try to bounce back from this wild game and get back in the
win column during the finale Thursday afternoon. Chris Flexen is scheduled to
make the 2:05 PM ET start for Las Vegas opposite lefty Harrison Musgrave.
On this day in 2017, the Large Area Telescope on board @NASAFermi detected its one-billionth gamma ray after eight years on orbit. This was a thousand times more photons than were seen by its predecessor, EGRET, during its entire 9-year mission. https://t.co/hL7Lqdzyry#OTD pic.twitter.com/bxXdECP3RW— NASAFermi (@NASAFermi) April 13, 2018
