Recapish
The
Brooklyn Cyclones blew an early lead to drop their rubber match with State
College 10-4 Thursday night. Cyclones starter Joel Huertas was able to limit
the damage early, but then the Spikes broke this game open with 7 runs off him
between the 5th and 6th innings. Meanwhile, State
College’s starter Ronnie Williams retired 9 straight to start the game before
Brooklyn exploded for 3 against him in the 4th, but then he threw 4
more scoreless frames while running his strikeout total to 10!
Officially,
it was bring your dog to the park night, but the Spikes were throwing a singles
party of their own. They finished with 12 singles in the game, 10 of which came
against Huertas, who has struggled with hits allowed early this season.
The
Spikes connected for three straight singles in the 1st to jump ahead
1-0. The score wouldn’t change until Brooklyn put together their 4th
inning rally, which gave them a 3-1 lead. The momentum shifted back in the
Spikes favor when they rallied for 4 runs and a 5-3 lead in the 5th.
The inning featured back-to-back extra bases hits (RBI triple from Ryan
McCarvel, RBI double from Bladimil Franco), and a two out RBI single for Elier
Rodriguez.
State
College broke this game open with three more in the 6th, scoring two
of those runs charged to Huertas after Nabil Crismatt took over. Crismatt allowed
just 3 hits, but all 3 went for extra bases and led to a run for the Spikes.
Brooklyn
managed a little 9th inning rally after Ronnie Williams was removed,
but it was far too late to be meaningful. I break down the scoring and defense
details with highlights below, so enjoy! With this series over, Brooklyn
travelled home to start a series with the Connecticut Tigers.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
Gene
Cone led off the 4th with the Cyclones first hit of the game. He
went to 2B when Nick Sergakis walked and then came around to score on an RBI
hit down the LF line off the bat of Colby Woodmansee. Brandon Brosher and
Arnaldo Berrios added RBI singles to give Brooklyn a 3-1 lead mid-4.
Woodmansee
added another hit in the 6th.
Berrios
picked up his second double of the season in the 7th.
Brosher
walked and came around to score on Berrios’ third hit of the game in the 9th.
Hengelbert Rojas added his hit in the frame.
MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights
Nick
Sergakis made a great diving stop on this grounder up the middle to end the 1st
inning.
Gene
Cone made a nice play tracking down a fly ball in center field during the 6th
inning.
Here
are some Blake Tiberi examples.
Here
are some Colby Woodmansee examples.
