Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies snapped a three-game skid Tuesday night against the River
Dogs, taking the middle game of their series 4-3 behind another strong start
from Kevin Canelon. Canelon went a season-high 8 IP, and still hasn’t allowed
more than 3 ER in any of his 15 starts this season.
Canelon
started out strong, striking out the side in the 1st and working a
perfect 2nd. Jeff Diehl handed him a 1-0 lead when he went deep with
two outs in the 2nd. It was Diehl’s 9th homer of the
season, when his previous career high for a season was 5.
The
River Dogs struck back with three in the 3rd. Alexander Palma
started the rally with a leadoff triple, and Gosuke Katoh capped it with a
two-run triple of his own. Katoh stood at third base with just one out in the
inning when the Fireflies turned a line out into the unusual 3-5 double play to
end the threat.
Suddenly
down 3-1, Columbia wasted little time tying this game up. After three straight
singles led to a run that cut the lead in half, Kevin Kaczmarski brought home
the tying run with a sac fly.
With
the game tied, the pitchers took over. Canelon needed just 48 pitches over his
final 5 frames and might’ve been able to stay out there for a complete game.
Milton Ramos reached on an error and stole 2B in the 5th, but came
up from his headfirst slide in pain, and it looked like he jammed him left
hand/wrist/forearm area into the ground on replay. He didn’t leave immediately,
but Tyler Moore would take over for him in the next half inning.
After
missing a few opportunities to take the lead during the middle innings, Cola
finally broke through in the 8th. Luis Ortega worked a walk leading
off the frame and got into scoring position for Dash Winningham thanks to a
wild pitch. Charleston put a big shift on against big Dash, and he made them
pay for it by slapping a single through the left side for an easy RBI single.
Tyler
Bashlor took over for Canelon in the 9th and worked a perfect
inning. He got some help from 8th inning hero Dash Winningham, who
made a nice stop on consecutive plays to end the game. Check out those
highlights, plus highlights from the Cola offense and Canelon’s start below.
This series wraps up with a rubber game Wednesday night at 7:05 PM, as Bryce
Beeler looks to continue his hot start to the 2016 season.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
Jeff
Diehl hit a solo blast with two outs in the 2nd inning to get the
Fireflies on the board. The inning would continue after Vicente Lupo walked and
Natanael Ramos singled, but then Lupo was caught off 3B on a poor baserunning
play to end the frame. Ramos had second base stolen since they weren’t throwing
through, but Lupo was caught too far off third base.
Milton
Ramos, J.C. Rodriguez, and Luis Ortega hit consecutive singles for a run
leading off the 3rd inning. Kevin Kaczmarski then tied the game with
a sac fly.
Natanael
Ramos picked up his second double of the season in the 7th, and he
stole third base in the frame, but was stranded there.
Ortega
led off the 8th with a walk, went to second base on a wild pitch,
and then scored on Dash Winningham’s big hit.
MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights
Vicente
Lupo made a nice sliding catch in the 2nd inning.
Dash
Winningham starting a double play to help his starter out of the tough 3rd
inning. The 6-4-3 double play turned also shown.
Winningham
showed off his moves in the 9th, making nice plays to his left and
to his right.
