June Stat Review: Columbia Fireflies

Jose Leger’s squad struggled at the end of June to finish with a record of 11-16 for the month

June

MVP: Jeffrey Diehl.

Cy: Kevin Canelon.

Fireman: Johnny Magliozzi.

Offense

Vicente Lupo - 21 PA, 0.444/0.524/0.667, 2 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 3 RBI, 3 BB, 7 K, 1 SB, 1 CS, 15.4% SwStr, 33.3% Whiff/Swing, 4.3 Pitches/PA, 0.727 BABIP
Been a spark for the Fireflies since returning, but that contact rate + BABIP is not a good recipe
Jeff Diehl - 71 PA, 0.290/0.380/0.532, 11 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 4 HR, 13 RBI, 9 BB, 23 K, 2 GIDP, 1 CS, 18% SwStr, 44% Whiff/Swing, 3.8 Pitches/PA, 0.400 BABIP
If Diehl reaches the PCL, it will be fun to watch his blasts
Tyler Moore - 36 PA, 0.290/0.389/0.484, 9 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 5 BB, 9 K, 1 GIDP, 11.4% SwStr, 29.8% Whiff/Swing, 4.1 Pitches/PA, 0.381 BABIP
Randomly had a strong July last year, but did little the rest of the season, so let’s see if he can keep it up this time. Has made a few appearances at 2B but his throwing looked awkward there
David Thompson - 76 PA, 0.300 /0.329/0.486, 10 R, 7 2B, 2 HR, 17 RBI, 2 BB, 2 HBP, 2 SF, 14 K, 2 GIDP, 14.4% SwStr, 25.6% Whiff/Swing, 3 Pitches/PA, 0.339 BABIP
Solid power, good fielder (charging bunts needs work), enough arm for 3B (not the plus line you want to see at 3B, but accurate and few bounced throws on MiLB.tv). Question is how he’ll adjust to more consistent hard stuff and if he’ll make enough contact in the upper levels.
Kevin Kaczmarski - 111 PA, 0.284/0.367/0.421, 11 R, 5 2B, 4 3B, 0 HR, 10 RBI, 12 BB, 1 HBP, 1 SF, 2 SAC, 19 K, 0 GIDP, 3 SB, 2 CS, 7.5% SwStr, 19.2% Whiff/Swing, 3.4 Pitches/PA, 0.351 BABIP
Kaczmarski has really turned it on after his rough April and has shown no L/R platoon splits. Been using LF more often lately.
Natanael Ramos - 12 PA, 0.273/0.333/0.455, 2 R, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 4 K, 16.3% SwStr, 30.4% Whiff/Swing, 3.6 Pitches/PA, 0.429 BABIP
Vinny Siena - 69 PA, 0.222/0.391/0.370, 10 R, 4 2B, 2 3B, 2 RBI, 13 BB, 2 HBP, 14 K, 1 GIDP, 4 SB, 1 CS, 9.2% SwStr, 25.6% Whiff/Swing, 3.6 Pitches/PA, 0.300 BABIP
Struggled with contact and managed just 10 XBH over 226 PA during May and June but was still an on base machine (37 BB, 6 HBP)
Dash Winningham - 89 PA, 0.259/0.273/0.447, 9 R, 10 2B, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 1 SF, 18 K, 1 CS, 13% SwStr, 25.3% Whiff/Swing, 3.5 Pitches/PA, 0.303 BABIP
Dash has been gradually improving this season but has managed just a .574 OPS against southpaws so far. He’s 19 months older than Dominic Smith was when he played for Savannah in 2014: Smith hit .271/.344/338 (.321 BABIP) with 26 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 14.9 K%: 9.8 BB% over 518 PA, Dash is at .235/.286/.361 (.274 BABIP) with 22 2B, 1 3B, 4 HR, 17.2 K%: 6.2 BB% over 308 PA.
Joe Tuschak - 72 PA, 0.212/0.278/0.424, 12 R, 5 2B, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 6 BB, 14 K, 2 GIDP, 1 CS, 16.9% SwStr, 32% Whiff/Swing, 3.2 Pitches/PA, 0.224 BABIP
Patrick Mazeika - 80 PA, 0.235/0.316/0.382, 6 R, 4 2B, 2 HR, 11 RBI, 8 BB, 1 HBP, 2 SF, 1 SAC, 10 K, 7.9% SwStr, 18.6% Whiff/Swing, 3.8 Pitches/PA, 0.241 BABIP
Solid peripherals but he’s since been moved to the DL.
Jean Rodriguez - 97 PA, 0.250/0.305/0.375, 16 R, 4 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 7 BB, 2 SAC, 16 K, 1 GIDP, 4 SB, 0 CS, 6.4% SwStr, 13.8% Whiff/Swing, 3.6 Pitches/PA, 0.296 BABIP
The switch hitter has huge platoon splits, again: .695 OPS vs. RHP, .385 OPS vs. LHP
Luis Ortega - 84 PA, 0.227/0.265/0.333, 8 R, 2 2B, 2 HR, 13 RBI, 4 BB, 1 HBP, 3 SF, 1 SAC, 18 K, 3 GIDP, 1 SB, 15.8% SwStr, 27.8% Whiff/Swing, 3.2 Pitches/PA, 0.259 BABIP
Enmanuel Zabala - 9 PA, 0.250/0.333/0.250, 2 R, 1 HBP, 5 K, 1 SB, 28.1% SwStr, 52.9% Whiff/Swing, 3.6 Pitches/PA, 0.667 BABIP
Cyclones Manager Tom Gamboa was high on Zabala’s extended spring training work and the speedy outfielder should be in CF for Columbia for the rest of the season.
Ivan Wilson - 67 PA, 0.177/0.239/0.323, 6 R, 6 2B, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 5 BB, 25 K, 2 GIDP, 1 SB, 1 CS, 19.3% SwStr, 38.2% Whiff/Swing, 3.6 Pitches/PA, 0.278 BABIP
Unfortunately for the Mets, Ivan Wilson has retired from baseball so he can take his tremendous athletic abilities to the gridiron. Good luck Ivan Wilson! Wouldn’t it be funny if he ended up playing for whatever team Paul DePodesta is working for down the line?
Milton Ramos - 88 PA, 0.217/0.253/0.253, 9 R, 3 2B, 6 RBI, 3 BB, 1 HBP, 1 SAC, 22 K, 4 GIDP, 1 SB, 1 CS, 13% SwStr, 23.9% Whiff/Swing, 3.4 Pitches/PA, 0.295 BABIP
Strikeout and walk rates went the wrong way and his OPS dropped nearly 200 points from May.
Jose Garcia - 6 PA, 0.000/0.167/0.000, 1 BB, 2 K, 29.4% SwStr, 55.6% Whiff/Swing, 2.8 Pitches/PA, 0.000 BABIP
Juan Centeno 2.0 left mid-game after taking a foul ball off his forearm and hasn’t returned.

Pitching

Starters

Gaby Almonte - 16.2 IP, 25 H, 8 R (5 ER), 3 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR, 39 TB, 1 BB, 9 K (7 K/Sw), 29 GB: 13 FB: 14 LD: 3 PU, 225 Pitches (153 Strikes), 20 Swinging, 39 Called, 8.9% SwStr, 17.5% Whiff/Swing, 13.5 Pitches/IP, 73 BF
His long motion resembles Gabriel Ynoa and he’s showing good control but he has been hit around so far, especially by lefties.
P.J. Conlon - 21.1 IP, 19 H, 9 R (7 ER), 3 2B, 2 HR, 28 TB, 1 BB, 14 K (12 K/Sw), 34 GB: 17 FB: 11 LD: 3 PU, 84 BF
Went 10 innings during his first start of the month and finished his Fireflies career as the South team starter in the SAL All-Star game.
Kevin Canelon - 31.1 IP, 33 H, 16 R (12 ER), 5 2B, 1 3B, 6 HR, 58 TB, 8 BB, 23 K (16 K/Sw), 33 GB: 42 FB: 15 LD: 12 PU, 423 Pitches (291 Strikes), 52 Swinging, 56 Called, 12.3% SwStr, 22.1% Whiff/Swing, 13.5 Pitches/IP, 135 BF
Lefties have a .274 ISO against the southpaw Canelon, but he’s held righties to a .637 OPS. Canelon has yet to allow more than 3 ER in a start (including unearned runs, he has allowed 4+ R 3 times), and 12 of 16 starts have been 6+ IP.
Tyler Badamo - 31.1 IP, 40 H, 17 R (16 ER), 12 2B, 3 HR, 61 TB, 2 BB, 23 K (20 K/Sw), 50 GB: 25 FB: 21 LD: 10 PU, 133 BF
Went 4+ starts without allowing a walk but ended the month on the DL with an apparent back issue. The gameday pitch info isn’t available for all of his starts during the month, but Badamo finished with 31 swinging strikes (18% Swinging strike rate) over his final 12.1 IP of the month
Chase Ingram - 25.2 IP, 30 H, 20 R (19 ER), 5 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 43 TB, 13 BB, 22 K (18 K/Sw), 38 GB: 26 FB: 14 LD: 3 PU, 459 Pitches (272 Strikes), 55 Swinging, 67 Called, 12% SwStr, 26.8% Whiff/Swing, 17.9 Pitches/IP, 122 BF
There were two bad starts and three very good ones. Ingram has three potential average pitches (fastball, changeup, knuckle curve could be plus), but may prove better suited for the pen.
Joe Shaw - 27.1 IP, 38 H, 26 R (23 ER), 6 2B, 4 HR, 56 TB, 9 BB, 31 K (22 K/Sw), 42 GB: 21 FB: 19 LD: 3 PU, 129 BF
Shaw’s breaking ball makes righties look silly, which has helped Shaw post a 29% strikeout rate against RHB’s in 243 PA (4.5% walk rate too!). Lefties have a .934 OPS and 13% strikeout rate against Shaw.

Relievers

Witt Haggard - 10.1 IP, 7 H, 2 R (0 ER), 0 HR, 7 TB, 6 BB, 9 K (9 K/Sw), 13 GB: 6 FB: 5 LD: 2 PU, 185 Pitches (114 Strikes), 13 Swinging, 31 Called, 7% SwStr, 15.7% Whiff/Swing, 17.9 Pitches/IP, 41 BF
Radio recently mentioned that the Fireflies coaches think Haggard has the most potential of the arms in this Cola pen, suggesting he just needs to improve his command.
Alex Palsha - 8.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R (2 ER), 3 2B, 1 HR, 11 TB, 4 BB, 10 K (7 K/Sw), 8 GB: 4 FB: 7 LD, 117 Pitches (74 Strikes), 15 Swinging, 26 Called, 12.8% SwStr, 31.2% Whiff/Swing, 13.5 Pitches/IP, 34 BF
Consistently big strikeout numbers, but Palsha has struggled against lefties in 2016: .839 OPS allowed vs. LHB compared to .418 OPS allowed vs. RHB.
Christian Montgomery - 7.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R (2 ER), 1 HR, 9 TB, 3 BB, 12 K (10 K/Sw), 8 GB: 4 FB: 3 LD: 0 PU, 102 Pitches (70 Strikes), 27 Swinging, 9 Called, 26.5% SwStr, 44.3% Whiff/Swing, 13.3 Pitches/IP, 32 BF
Was placed on the suspended list on 6/27 and the Mets have yet to announce why.
Johnny Magliozzi - 15 IP, 14 H, 4 R (3 ER), 4 2B, 2 HR, 24 TB, 4 BB, 10 K (9 K/Sw), 16 GB: 10 FB: 17 LD: 2 PU, 208 Pitches (131 Strikes), 24 Swinging, 25 Called, 11.5% SwStr, 22.6% Whiff/Swing, 13.9 Pitches/IP, 60 BF
Including his first two appearances of July, Magliozzi has limited the SAL to a 1.44 ERA over his last 12 appearances (25 IP), with 18 K: 7 BB and just 23 hits allowed
Tyler Bashlor - 12.1 IP, 8 H, 4 R (3 ER), 2 2B, 1 3B, 0 HR, 12 TB, 4 BB, 14 K (13 K/Sw), 13 GB: 9 FB: 4 LD: 3 PU, 180 Pitches (119 Strikes), 25 Swinging, 27 Called, 13.9% SwStr, 27.2% Whiff/Swing, 14.6 Pitches/IP, 49 BF
Bashlor’s walk rate has improved throughout the season and he’s held lefties to a mere .348 OPS in 2016. Shown the most potential out of the Cola pen in 2016.
Seth Davis - 12.1 IP, 10 H, 6 R (3 ER), 3 2B, 1 3B, 0 HR, 15 TB, 7 BB, 14 K (11 K/Sw), 12 GB: 9 FB: 6 LD: 6 PU, 202 Pitches (125 Strikes), 42 Swinging, 19 Called, 20.8% SwStr, 39.6% Whiff/Swing, 16.4 Pitches/IP, 58 BF
Potential LOOGY: 32 K%, .479 OPS allowed vs. LHB.
Craig Missigman - 12.1 IP, 14 H, 11 R (5 ER), 4 2B, 0 HR, 18 TB, 11 BB, 11 K (9 K/Sw), 16 GB: 9 FB: 12 LD: 1 PU, 230 Pitches (138 Strikes), 26 Swinging, 37 Called, 11.3% SwStr, 25.7% Whiff/Swing, 18.7 Pitches/IP, 61 BF
Six unearned runs in one 1.1 IP outing was unusual and he issued multiple walks in 6 straight outings during June
