June Stat Review: Binghamton Mets

Pedro Lopez’s squad finished June with a 13-14 record

June

MVP: L.J. Mazzilli.

Fireman: Tim Peterson.

Offense

Amed Rosario - 32 PA, 0.414/0.469/0.621, 7 R, 4 2B, 1 3B, 7 RBI, 3 BB, 7 K, 1 SB, 1 CS, 15.1% SwStr, 29.2% Whiff/Swing, 3.9 Pitches/PA, 0.545 BABIP
Great start but not going to maintain it with such a low contact rate (100% - Whiff/Swing) or high BABIP
L.J. Mazzilli - 89 PA, 0.299/0.368/0.429, 12 R, 3 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 14 RBI, 9 BB, 1 SF, 2 SAC, 15 K, 2 GIDP, 1 SB, 3 CS, 5.6% SwStr, 14.2% Whiff/Swing, 3.8 Pitches/PA, 0.355 BABIP
Mazzilli’s best month since reaching Double-A earned him MVP honors, but there’s reason to believe his numbers can improve further over the second half of 2016. Scouts who like him have pointed to his solid BP power, and that appears to be showing up in games again – he hit 11 homers across two levels in 2014.

Dominic Smith - 106 PA, 0.269/0.340/0.430, 14 R, 6 2B, 3 HR, 18 RBI, 9 BB, 2 HBP, 2 SF, 14 K, 1 GIDP, 1 CS, 10.4% SwStr, 21.7% Whiff/Swing, 3.5 Pitches/PA, 0.282 BABIP
Smith turned 21 and then finished the month with his best stretch as a pro, which carried over into early July. The power has started to show up this season, but his contact rate has been merely average.
Phillip Evans - 85 PA, 0.321/0.365/0.397, 7 R, 3 2B, 1 HR, 9 RBI, 6 BB, 1 SF, 13 K, 1 SB, 1 CS, 11.4% SwStr, 23.5% Whiff/Swing, 3.7 Pitches/PA, 0.369 BABIP
Matt Reynolds 2.0. Doesn’t get a T.J. Rivera comp because Evans is two years younger than T.J. was when he reached Double-A and is a better fielder.
Stefan Sabol - 76 PA, 0.265/0.342/0.382, 5 R, 5 2B, 1 HR, 9 RBI, 6 BB, 2 HBP, 23 K, 2 SB, 3 CS, 14.8% SwStr, 34.7% Whiff/Swing, 3.8 Pitches/PA, 0.386 BABIP
Sabol has contact issues against both LHP’s and RHP’s, but he’s maintained a .753 OPS against lefties this season vs. .572 OPS against righties
Victor Cruzado - 44 PA, 0.268/0.318/0.366, 8 R, 4 2B, 7 RBI, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 7 K, 2 GIDP, 1 SB, 6.1% SwStr, 14.7% Whiff/Swing, 3.7 Pitches/PA, 0.324 BABIP
Spent some time in CF at the beginning of the month and then finished it on the DL.
Derrik Gibson - 82 PA, 0.264/0.346/0.319, 15 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 7 RBI, 7 BB, 2 HBP, 1 SAC, 9 K, 4 SB, 1 CS, 3.4% SwStr, 9.9% Whiff/Swing, 3.9 Pitches/PA, 0.302 BABIP
Maintaining a .700+ OPS in Double-A for the second time in his career. He first reached Double-A in 2012.
Colton Plaia - 49 PA, 0.244/0.292/0.356, 5 R, 5 2B, 4 RBI, 3 BB, 1 SAC, 12 K, 13.7% SwStr, 24.4% Whiff/Swing, 3.3 Pitches/PA, 0.333 BABIP
OPS has improved with each month and he has a .901 OPS in his 42 PA against lefties. He’s thrown out 10 of 32 potential basestealers (31%).
Niuman Romero - 37 PA, 0.265/0.324/0.324, 4 R, 2 2B, 3 BB, 5 K, 8.2% SwStr, 16.9% Whiff/Swing, 4 Pitches/PA, 0.310 BABIP
Xorge Carrillo - 63 PA, 0.241/0.349/0.241, 4 R, 3 RBI, 9 BB, 15 K, 1 GIDP, 1 CS, 8.4% SwStr, 20.8% Whiff/Swing, 4.2 Pitches/PA, 0.333 BABIP
His OPS has dropped in each of the first three months and his contact rate dropped in June. He’s thrown out 22 of 68 potential basestealers (32%).
Jared King - 15 PA, 0.167/0.333/0.250, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 3 BB, 2 K, 1 GIDP, 1 SB, 6.2% SwStr, 14.3% Whiff/Swing, 4.3 Pitches/PA, 0.200 BABIP
Retired from baseball.
Jayce Boyd - 108 PA, 0.214/0.278/0.265, 9 R, 3 2B, 1 3B, 7 RBI, 8 BB, 1 HBP, 1 SF, 18 K, 6 GIDP, 3 CS, 6% SwStr, 13.6% Whiff/Swing, 3.7 Pitches/PA, 0.259 BABIP
Boyd has struggled against RHP’s since being cleared to play in 2016 (.506 OPS) and hasn’t been hitting the ball with much authority in general (just 4 doubles, 1 triple in 127 AB)
Matt Oberste - 68 PA, 0.231/0.265/0.262, 6 R, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 3 BB, 14 K, 3 GIDP, 1 SB, 10.9% SwStr, 23.1% Whiff/Swing, 3.6 Pitches/PA, 0.294 BABIP
Had a hit in 12 of 14 games during one stretch in June but just three multi-hit games for the month and did little aside from the singles
Maikis De La Cruz - 64 PA, 0.158/0.250/0.158, 4 R, 2 RBI, 7 BB, 16 K, 1 GIDP, 1 CS, 10.2% SwStr, 23.6% Whiff/Swing, 4 Pitches/PA, 0.220 BABIP
Just like in 2015, Maikis started this year hot but really slumped in June
Kyle Johnson - 25 PA, 0.136/0.200/0.182, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 SF, 7 K, 1 SB, 1 CS, 10.7% SwStr, 21.2% Whiff/Swing, 4.1 Pitches/PA, 0.188 BABIP

Pitching

Starters

Robert Gsellman - 8 IP, 6 H, 2 R (2 ER), 2 2B, 0 HR, 8 TB, 0 BB, 4 K (4 K/Sw), 15 GB: 4 FB: 3 LD: 2 PU, 93 Pitches (66 Strikes), 7 Swinging, 17 Called, 7.5% SwStr, 14.3% Whiff/Swing, 11.6 Pitches/IP, 29 BF
Promoted to Las Vegas.
Rainy Lara - 29.2 IP, 22 H, 9 R (8 ER), 6 2B, 1 3B, 0 HR, 30 TB, 10 BB, 23 K (16 K/Sw), 23 GB: 31 FB: 21 LD: 8 PU, 391 Pitches (253 Strikes), 32 Swinging, 81 Called, 8.2% SwStr, 18.6% Whiff/Swing, 13.2 Pitches/IP, 117 BF
Held Eastern League batters to a .554 OPS in June, which is his best mark for a month since reaching Double-A, and has held righties to a .661 OPS for the season (lefties at .863 OPS).
Casey Delgado - 32 IP, 36 H, 14 R (13 ER), 10 2B, 2 3B, 4 HR, 62 TB, 11 BB, 28 K (23 K/Sw), 42 GB: 24 FB: 28 LD: 6 PU, 511 Pitches (323 Strikes), 49 Swinging, 79 Called, 9.6% SwStr, 20.1% Whiff/Swing, 16 Pitches/IP, 141 BF
B-Mets had him skip a start but he was effective and gave them length in 4 of 5 outings
Tyler Pill - 33.2 IP, 31 H, 16 R (12 ER), 8 2B, 4 3B, 1 HR, 50 TB, 3 BB, 28 K (18 K/Sw), 40 GB: 36 FB: 19 LD: 3 PU, 454 Pitches (302 Strikes), 50 Swinging, 88 Called, 11% SwStr, 23.4% Whiff/Swing, 13.5 Pitches/IP, 133 BF
Pill had allowed 1 or 0 walks in 6 straight starts through the end of June
Josh Zeid - 23 IP, 23 H, 16 R (15 ER), 7 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 38 TB, 12 BB, 14 K (12 K/Sw), 26 GB: 26 FB: 17 LD: 7 PU, 421 Pitches (254 Strikes), 26 Swinging, 71 Called, 6.2% SwStr, 14.2% Whiff/Swing, 18.3 Pitches/IP, 103 BF
Zeid was hitting mid-90’s with his gas in his first start, which went great (6.2 scoreless with 6 K), but really struggled with walks over his next three starts.
Mickey Jannis - 35 IP, 37 H, 21 R (20 ER), 4 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 49 TB, 21 BB, 17 K (15 K/Sw), 63 GB: 28 FB: 25 LD: 7 PU, 583 Pitches (359 Strikes), 40 Swinging, 86 Called, 6.9% SwStr, 14.7% Whiff/Swing, 16.7 Pitches/IP, 164 BF
Hadn’t earned a win since his first start of the season before finishing the month with two straight.

Relievers

Tim Peterson - 10.2 IP, 12 H, 1 R (1 ER), 5 2B, 18 TB, 2 BB, 11 K (5 K/Sw), 12 GB: 14 FB: 6 LD: 1 PU, 163 Pitches (117 Strikes), 16 Swinging, 39 Called, 9.8% SwStr, 20.5% Whiff/Swing, 15.3 Pitches/IP, 46 BF
Peterson has held batters (EL and FSL) to a .574 OPS for the season despite allowing a .372 BABIP.
Luis Mateo - 11.1 IP, 7 H, 3 R (3 ER), 1 2B, 8 TB, 7 BB, 10 K (8 K/Sw), 17 GB: 4 FB: 8 LD: 1 PU, 180 Pitches (105 Strikes), 20 Swinging, 29 Called, 11.1% SwStr, 26.3% Whiff/Swing, 15.9 Pitches/IP, 47 BF
Mateo isn’t posting great peripherals, but he’s been consistently effective out of the B-Mets pen this season: he’s allowed more than 1 ER just twice all season and posted scoreless outings in 17 of 24 appearances through the end of June.
David Roseboom - 9.1 IP, 8 H, 3 R (3 ER), 3 2B, 1 HR, 14 TB, 2 BB, 10 K (10 K/Sw), 8 GB: 13 FB: 4 LD, 136 Pitches (91 Strikes), 29 Swinging, 20 Called, 21.3% SwStr, 40.8% Whiff/Swing, 14.6 Pitches/IP, 38 BF
Walk rate and strikeout rate is higher against lefties.
Akeel Morris - 4 IP, 2 H, 3 R (3 ER), 1 HR, 5 TB, 4 BB, 8 K (6 K/Sw), 5 GB: 1 FB: 0 LD: 0 PU, 81 Pitches (51 Strikes), 9 Swinging, 17 Called, 11.1% SwStr, 26.5% Whiff/Swing, 20.2 Pitches/IP, 18 BF
Traded to the Braves.
Beck Wheeler - 9.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R (4 ER), 2 2B, 8 TB, 7 BB, 17 K (16 K/Sw), 6 GB: 6 FB: 4 LD: 1 PU, 163 Pitches (91 Strikes), 27 Swinging, 27 Called, 16.6% SwStr, 42.2% Whiff/Swing, 16.9 Pitches/IP, 41 BF
Wheeler has since been moved to Las Vegas and might actually become an option for the Mets later in the year. Fastball tops out in the low-90’s, but his curve and splitter are nasty, and he’s generally been better against lefties in his career.
Kevin McGowan - 14.1 IP, 12 H, 5 R (4 ER), 2 2B, 14 TB, 3 BB, 16 K (14 K/Sw), 15 GB: 14 FB: 5 LD: 3 PU, 200 Pitches (139 Strikes), 40 Swinging, 28 Called, 20% SwStr, 36% Whiff/Swing, 14 Pitches/IP, 58 BF
McGowan has thrived in the pen this season because he’s attacking the zone with a low-90’s-heater/slider/changeup combo.
Alberto Baldonado - 10.1 IP, 8 H, 4 R (3 ER), 1 2B, 2 HR, 15 TB, 5 BB, 12 K (8 K/Sw), 11 GB: 5 FB: 6 LD: 3 PU, 186 Pitches (114 Strikes), 22 Swinging, 27 Called, 11.8% SwStr, 25.3% Whiff/Swing, 18 Pitches/IP, 44 BF
The lanky lefty has been inconsistent since reaching Double-A but has a little funk to his delivery and can go from 94 MPH with his heater to 74 MPH with his curve
Logan Taylor - 13 IP, 15 H, 8 R (7 ER), 5 2B, 20 TB, 6 BB, 17 K (16 K/Sw), 23 GB: 8 FB: 7 LD: 1 PU, 253 Pitches (157 Strikes), 31 Swinging, 42 Called, 12.3% SwStr, 27% Whiff/Swing, 19.5 Pitches/IP, 62 BF
Taylor wasn’t used as consistently in June, and he struggled when given 3+ days between appearances.
