2016 Monday Morning Mets Minors Players of the Week

B-Mets fans strap in when you see this: Smith at the plate, Oberste on deck. Fireworks may follow

June 27 - July 3, 2016

Keeping track of the hottest minor leaguers in the Mets farm system.

Hitter of the Week: Dominic Smith had arguably his best week as a pro, finishing with 4 doubles, 4 homers, and 10 RBI’s. He does a good job of waiting back on soft stuff to drive it the other way, and lately he’s been ready to pull the hard stuff to RF or back up the middle with authority.
Starting Pitcher of the Week: Ricky Knapp went 2-0 with two 7-inning gems across two different levels last week, holding opponents to just 2 runs on 8 hits with 9 strikeouts (though he did walk 6). He was commanding a quality curve nicely last year to dominate the SAL when I caught him on MiLB.tv a few times, so I’m curious to see how he looks against Double-A batters.
Relief Pitcher of the Week: While not strictly used as a reliever this past week, I’m going to give the Fireman to Ben Griset. The Mets picked up Griset for the Sand Gnats pen last year and he’s been extremely effective in the role – he had previously mostly started in the Tampa Bay organization. This year with St. Lucie, he has a 0.86 ERA and 28 K: 10 BB in 31.1 IP, with just 20 hits allowed. That’s good for a .463 OPS against, and the southpaw has held righties to a .487 OPS. I saw his curve in person and it made Rome batters look bad, and given his dominance in the FSL, I wouldn’t be surprised if he finishes the year in Double-A.
Team of the Week: The St. Lucie Mets had the best record and they haven’t really slowed down since losing Amed Rosario to the B-Mets.

Bold Astro Predictions: Went 1-3 last week, as there were promotions, but the B-Mets couldn’t finish multiple games above .500, and Milton Ramos had a .150 OPS.
#1 – John Mora will at least be the top hitter in St. Lucie next week.
#2 – Robert Gsellman returns with a strong, but short effort for Las Vegas.
#3 – The Cyclones are going to have a big week.

2-4 week

Pitchers

Darin Gorski - 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R (1 ER), 2 2B, 6 TB, 1 BB, 4 K (2 K/Sw), 5 GB: 6 FB: 5 LD: 4 PU, 83 Pitches (54 Strikes), 6 Swinging, 16 Called, 7.2% SwStr, 15.8% Whiff/Swing, 11.9 Pitches/IP, 25 BF
Check out this great story of how Gorski returned to the 51s. He was a little out of sync – perhaps overeager – in his first inning back with the club, but has been lights out since

Batters

Gavin Cecchini - 23 PA, 0.389/0.522/0.611, 4 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 5 BB, 3 K, 1 GIDP, 8.2% SwStr, 20% Whiff/Swing, 4.3 Pitches/PA, 0.467 BABIP
The conversation should be about what a patient, contact-rate driven hitter Cecchini is, but instead his 26 errors in 56 games at SS kind of stand out. Most of his problems this season are between the ears, as he discusses here, but his throwing has been an issue for two straight seasons
Travis Taijeron - 26 PA, 0.375/0.385/0.625, 3 R, 3 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SF, 9 K, 15.3% SwStr, 31.2% Whiff/Swing, 3.8 Pitches/PA, 0.533 BABIP
Not going to be the first to suggest Travis Taijeron start playing 1B everyday for this club, but seriously, what’s the harm in making this slugger a little more versatile?
Johnny Monell - 17 PA, 0.333/0.412/0.533, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 GIDP, 1 SB, 11.5% SwStr, 29.2% Whiff/Swing, 3.6 Pitches/PA, 0.364 BABIP
7-game hitting streak and hasn’t slowed down since mid-May: .979 OPS with 10 doubles and 11 homers in his last 40 games (180 PA), with 27 K: 14 BB
Kevin Plawecki - 20 PA, 0.278/0.350/0.500, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB, 2 K, 5.9% SwStr, 11.8% Whiff/Swing, 3.4 Pitches/PA, 0.267 BABIP
Some Mets fans are down on Plaw, but that seems unfair given the guy wasn’t ready at the plate when he was called up last year. There’s still plenty of potential in here, and now he can focus on developing at the plate without the scrutiny of #MetsTwitter and beat reporter hot takes

5-4 week

Pitchers

Rainy Lara - 4.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R (1 ER), 3 TB, 1 BB, 4 K (3 K/Sw), 5 GB: 5 FB: 1 LD: 1 PU, 36 Pitches (28 Strikes), 9 Swinging, 4 Called, 25% SwStr, 37.5% Whiff/Swing, 7.7 Pitches/IP, 17 BF
Lara left mid-AB and has since been place on the DL, soooo, not a good sign
Ricky Knapp - 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R (2 ER), 1 2B, 6 TB, 3 BB, 5 K (5 K/Sw), 11 GB: 5 FB: 6 LD: 1 PU, 100 Pitches (58 Strikes), 7 Swinging, 20 Called, 7% SwStr, 18.4% Whiff/Swing, 14.3 Pitches/IP, 31 BF
Knapp had a nice debut for the B-Mets

Luis Mateo - 3 IP, 1 BB, 3 K (3 K/Sw), 5 GB: 1 FB: 1 PU, 32 Pitches (21 Strikes), 8 Swinging, 4 Called, 25% SwStr, 47.1% Whiff/Swing, 10.7 Pitches/IP, 11 BF
Mateo’s been more effective with each month and he’s issued more than one walk in just 1 of 29 appearances
David Roseboom - 4 IP, 5 H, 1 R (1 ER), 1 2B, 6 TB, 1 BB, 6 K (6 K/Sw), 4 GB: 6 FB: 3 LD, 70 Pitches (47 Strikes), 12 Swinging, 13 Called, 17.1% SwStr, 35.3% Whiff/Swing, 17.5 Pitches/IP, 20 BF
Roseboom appears to have taken over the closers role with Beck Wheeler promoted to Las Vegas, and he had a perfect 9th in his first shot Sunday night

Batters

Dominic Smith - 38 PA, 0.412/0.474/0.882, 9 R, 4 2B, 4 HR, 10 RBI, 3 BB, 1 HBP, 5 K, 12.7% SwStr, 28.1% Whiff/Swing, 3.3 Pitches/PA, 0.4 BABIP
Smith has 6 homers and 4 doubles in his last dozen games
Matt Oberste - 23 PA, 0.350/0.348/0.750, 5 R, 2 2B, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 2 SF, 6 K, 1 GIDP, 12.2% SwStr, 24.5% Whiff/Swing, 4.3 Pitches/PA, 0.357 BABIP
Smith and Oberste went back-to-back twice on Saturday, and Oberste has already doubled his June extra base hit output over the first 3 day of July
Amed Rosario - 34 PA, 0.379/0.471/0.517, 8 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 7 RBI, 5 BB, 6 K, 2 CS, 15.2% SwStr, 30.8% Whiff/Swing, 3.9 Pitches/PA, 0.478 BABIP
He adds the hashtag #DontBeSurprisedBeReady to all of his tweets, so I try to be ready, but he still surprises me with how smooth he is in the field or how easily he laces a double over the center fielder’s head. He’s probably going to slow down at the plate at some point, but he makes an impact on both sides of the field
Phillip Evans - 16 PA, 0.231/0.375/0.538, 3 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 3 BB, 4 K, 15% SwStr, 33.3% Whiff/Swing, 3.8 Pitches/PA, 0.250 BABIP
Lost PA’s to Jose Reyes this past week but still produced in his limited action. Looks like a stockier Matt Reynolds at the plate, and is a better defender around the infield than the Mets utility man
L.J. Mazzilli - 28 PA, 0.320/0.357/0.480, 6 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 2 BB, 1 SF, 5 K, 2 GIDP, 7.2% SwStr, 17.1% Whiff/Swing, 3.5 Pitches/PA, 0.350 BABIP
Fell just short of an .800 OPS in June, but that was by far his best month in Double-A, and it doesn’t look like he’s going to slow down anytime soon. Has a strong arm if the Mets ever decide to move him to 3B or a corner OF spot to increase his versatility.
Jose Reyes - 29 PA, 0.240/0.310/0.280, 6 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 3 BB, 1 SF, 3 K, 1 SB, 1 CS, 6.5% SwStr, 14% Whiff/Swing, 3.7 Pitches/PA, 0.261 BABIP
Obviously didn’t have a great week at the plate with Binghamton, but he was putting in all that extra work at 3B. He still has a great arm for the left side of the infield and he did put together some good PA’s throughout the weekend. Also, if Brooklyn and Binghamton are any indication, Reyes is going to be well received by Mets fans despite the controversy around his domestic violence issues.

4-2 week

Pitchers

Ricky Knapp - 7 IP, 4 H, 4 TB, 3 BB, 5 K (2 K/Sw), 11 GB: 2 FB: 2 LD: 4 PU, 101 Pitches (66 Strikes), 8 Swinging, 24 Called, 7.9% SwStr, 19% Whiff/Swing, 14.4 Pitches/IP, 27 BF
P.J. Conlon - 7.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R (2 ER), 1 3B, 8 TB, 1 BB, 5 K (3 K/Sw), 14 GB: 7 FB: 1 LD: 2 PU, 105 Pitches (76 Strikes), 8 Swinging, 30 Called, 7.6% SwStr, 17.4% Whiff/Swing, 13.7 Pitches/IP, 31 BF
The real test for Conlon is whether his changeup is effective against upper level hitters next season
Scarlyn Reyes - 6.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R (2 ER), 2 2B, 6 TB, 5 BB, 6 K (4 K/Sw), 8 GB: 6 FB: 2 LD, 94 Pitches (57 Strikes), 10 Swinging, 13 Called, 10.6% SwStr, 22.7% Whiff/Swing, 14.8 Pitches/IP, 28 BF
Still interested in seeing whether he can excel from the pen, but he’s been more effective for St. Lucie lately
Ben Griset - 5.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R (0 ER), 1 2B, 7 TB, 5 K (2 K/Sw), 6 GB: 7 FB: 5 LD: 1 PU, 81 Pitches (57 Strikes), 8 Swinging, 17 Called, 9.9% SwStr, 20% Whiff/Swing, 14.3 Pitches/IP, 24 BF

Mike Hepple - 4.1 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 3 BB, 2 K (2 K/Sw), 6 GB: 3 FB: 1 LD, 60 Pitches (30 Strikes), 5 Swinging, 7 Called, 8.3% SwStr, 21.7% Whiff/Swing, 13.9 Pitches/IP, 15 BF
Can be effective, but needs to find the strike zone more often

Batters

Kevin Taylor - 36 PA, 0.412/0.444/0.735, 8 R, 2 2B, 3 HR, 13 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K, 2 GIDP, 2.2% SwStr, 5.4% Whiff/Swing, 3.8 Pitches/PA, 0.367 BABIP
Extremely high contact hitter and he’s been hitting with power. Would like to see him take over for Derrik Gibson at Double-A when Jose Reyes is promoted, but Pedro Lopez seems to be a big fan of Gibson
Wuilmer Becerra - 36 PA, 0.441/0.472/0.647, 7 R, 4 2B, 1 HR, 9 RBI, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 6 K, 1 GIDP, 3 SB, 13.3% SwStr, 24.1% Whiff/Swing, 2.7 Pitches/PA, 0.519 BABIP
Still a chance he joins the B-Mets after the Eastern League All-Star game (fingers crossed), especially if this power outburst continues
Jhoan Urena - 26 PA, 0.417/0.423/0.583, 4 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 9 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SF, 3 K, 8% SwStr, 14.6% Whiff/Swing, 3.4 Pitches/PA, 0.455 BABIP
I’ve heard that Urena has been hitting the ball well throughout the season, just not getting the results at the FSL level, so I wonder if he’s a guy who can ‘break out’ after his eventual promotion to Double-A
Jonathan Johnson - 23 PA, 0.368/0.478/0.368, 6 R, 1 RBI, 4 BB, 1 K, 3.7% SwStr, 11.1% Whiff/Swing, 4.7 Pitches/PA, 0.389 BABIP
Jonathan Walkson has been an on-base machine again in 2016
Champ Stuart - 37 PA, 0.312/0.405/0.438, 7 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 4 BB, 1 HBP, 11 K, 5 SB, 10.6% SwStr, 24.6% Whiff/Swing, 3.8 Pitches/PA, 0.450 BABIP
Has already set new career highs in homers (6) and triples (6), and will soon set new career bests in runs scored, doubles, RBI’s, walks, and stolen bases. He’s also raised his OPS by about 250 points in his return to the FSL
Vinny Siena - 20 PA, 0.333/0.500/0.333, 4 R, 3 RBI, 4 BB, 1 HBP, 2 K, 7.8% SwStr, 18.8% Whiff/Swing, 3.8 Pitches/PA, 0.385 BABIP
Siena should be smacking the ball around just fine by the end of this season, but the real test will be Double-A next season
John Mora - 37 PA, 0.312/0.405/0.406, 9 R, 3 2B, 4 RBI, 4 BB, 1 HBP, 1 K, 2 GIDP, 3.8% SwStr, 11.6% Whiff/Swing, 3.6 Pitches/PA, 0.323 BABIP
Has a hit in 10 of his last 11 games

3-4 week

Pitchers

Bryce Beeler - 6.1 IP, 4 H, 1 2B, 5 TB, 1 BB, 5 K (4 K/Sw), 11 GB: 5 FB: 1 PU, 75 Pitches (51 Strikes), 8 Swinging, 12 Called, 10.7% SwStr, 20.5% Whiff/Swing, 11.8 Pitches/IP, 23 BF
Should get my first good look at Beeler on MiLB.tv this week, so I’ll have a better idea of what his stuff looks like next week. He’s thrown 13.1 IP between Brooklyn and Columbia without allowing a run, and he’s at 12 K: 2 BB
Chase Ingram - 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R (1 ER), 4 TB, 3 BB, 8 K (6 K/Sw), 6 GB: 3 FB: 1 LD, 93 Pitches (53 Strikes), 14 Swinging, 17 Called, 15.1% SwStr, 38.9% Whiff/Swing, 18.6 Pitches/IP, 21 BF
Bounced back from his worst start as a pro to give the Fireflies a very strong effort

Tyler Bashlor - 2.2 IP, 1 BB, 3 K (2 K/Sw), 2 GB: 2 FB: 1 PU, 42 Pitches (25 Strikes), 6 Swinging, 9 Called, 14.3% SwStr, 37.5% Whiff/Swing, 15.7 Pitches/IP, 10 BF
Hasn’t allowed an earned run over his last 6 appearances, with 14 K: 4 BB and only 4 hits allowed over 10 IP

Batters

Patrick Mazeika - 19 PA, 0.417/0.632/0.667, 3 R, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 7 BB, 1 K, 1 GIDP, 5.9% SwStr, 21.7% Whiff/Swing, 4.5 Pitches/PA, 0.4 BABIP
He’s controlling the zone nicely and appeared to be getting his timing down when the Fireflies were last on MiLB.tv
David Thompson - 22 PA, 0.316/0.318/0.579, 5 R, 2 2B, 1 HR, 9 RBI, 1 HBP, 2 SF, 6 K, 1 GIDP, 19% SwStr, 34.9% Whiff/Swing, 3.6 Pitches/PA, 0.357 BABIP
Will mash when healthy, but Thompson has been on and off the 7-day DL with apparently minor things throughout the season
Jeffrey Diehl - 16 PA, 0.286/0.375/0.500, 2 R, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB, 7 K, 24.6% SwStr, 54.8% Whiff/Swing, 4.3 Pitches/PA, 0.500 BABIP
Kind of looks like a right-handed version of Lucas Duda at the plate (6’4”, big leg kick) but hits like a rawer version of Travis Taijeron
Vicente Lupo - 18 PA, 0.312/0.333/0.500, 1 R, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 HBP, 1 SF, 7 K, 1 CS, 18.6% SwStr, 40.6% Whiff/Swing, 3.9 Pitches/PA, 0.444 BABIP
Been very hot since returning to the Fireflies lineup
Dash Winningham - 29 PA, 0.345/0.345/0.483, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 9 K, 15.5% SwStr, 30.9% Whiff/Swing, 3.8 Pitches/PA, 0.474 BABIP
After keeping the strikeouts in check for most of the season, Dash has recorded at least one strikeout in 12 straight games, but he does have three doubles and a pair of homers during that stretch

3-4 week

Pitchers

Erik Manoah - 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R (2 ER), 1 2B, 7 TB, 2 BB, 9 K (8 K/Sw), 5 GB: 2 FB: 4 LD: 1 PU, 89 Pitches (56 Strikes), 20 Swinging, 12 Called, 22.5% SwStr, 45.5% Whiff/Swing, 17.8 Pitches/IP, 23 BF
Manoah struggled with walks over the past two seasons, but through 3 starts his 2016 walk rate is half of his previous career rate

Taylor Henry - 5 IP, 2 H, 2 TB, 2 BB, 2 K (2 K/Sw), 8 GB: 3 FB: 3 LD: 1 PU, 62 Pitches (41 Strikes), 9 Swinging, 6 Called, 14.5% SwStr, 25.7% Whiff/Swing, 12.4 Pitches/IP, 19 BF
Southpaw was the Mets 21st round pick last year and has thrown 6 straight scoreless appearances out of the Brooklyn bullpen. He earned a chance with St. Lucie during XST, so I wonder if he’s a potential Fireflies addition
Adam Atkins - 2 IP, 1 BB, 5 K (3 K/Sw), 1 GB, 29 Pitches (20 Strikes), 7 Swinging, 6 Called, 24.1% SwStr, 50% Whiff/Swing, 14.5 Pitches/IP, 7 BF
The Mets 18th round pick made the list because of that awesome K-rate

Batters

Brandon Brosher - 23 PA, 0.400/0.478/0.700, 5 R, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 3 BB, 9 K, 1 SB, 1 CS, 15.5% SwStr, 38.5% Whiff/Swing, 4.2 Pitches/PA, 0.667 BABIP
Brosher’s riding a 6-game hitting streak, but he’s K’d in 1/3 of his PA during the stretch. Only one game without a strikeout in 2016
Arnaldo Berrios - 26 PA, 0.455/0.48-/0.591, 3 R, 3 2B, 7 RBI, 2 BB, 1 SF, 1 SAC, 5 K, 1 CS, 16.3% SwStr, 29.8% Whiff/Swing, 3.3 Pitches/PA, 0.556 BABIP
The Mets 39th-round pick had a very nice series in State College, with multiple hits in all three games
Jay Jabs - 27 PA, 0.273/0.407/0.455, 3 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 5 BB, 6 K, 1 GIDP, 1 CS, 6.2% SwStr, 15% Whiff/Swing, 5.4 Pitches/PA, 0.375 BABIP
Jabs has a hit in 10 of 12 games with 9 K: 9 BB and 4 XBH

3-4 week

Pitchers

Max Wotell – 2 GS, 10.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R (1 ER), 2 2B, 7 TB, 4 BB, 10 K (8 K/Sw), 6 GB: 7 FB: 7 LD: 6 PU, 42 BF
Wotell briefly lost control when he walked 4 of 5 batters in the 2nd inning of his first start, but he’s clearly dominated outside of that stretch. After that first game, Wotell said he “started speeding things up and let it spiral a bit during the 2nd inning.”
Thomas Szapucki - 4.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R (0 ER), 2 2B, 4 TB, 4 BB, 6 K (5 K/Sw), 6 GB: 1 FB: 4 LD, 21 BF
Szapucki took the L event though he didn’t allow an earned run. He’s up to 19 K: 4 BB with just 4 hits allowed as a starter
Jordan Humphreys - 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R (1 ER), 2 2B, 7 TB, 4 K (3 K/Sw), 8 GB: 6 FB: 3 LD: 1 PU, 22 BF
Humphreys didn’t match his 10 K performance from his first start, but he was able to go an inning deeper

Darwin Ramos – 2 G, 1 GS, 6 IP, 3 H, 3 R (1 ER), 1 2B, 4 TB, 4 BB, 9 K (7 K/Sw), 3 GB: 2 FB: 3 LD: 2 PU, 25 BF
He struggled with command and, as a result, length as a starter, but has shown good strikeout potential with the K-Mets

Batters

Jeremy Wolf - 20 PA, 0.312/0.400/0.562, 3 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 3 BB, 1 SF, 4 K, 1 GIDP, 0.333 BABIP
22-year old lefty OF/1B had a 4-hit game with his first pro homer and second pro double
Jose Medina - 24 PA, 0.304/0.333/0.522, 5 R, 1 3B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 4 K, 2 SB, 0.333 BABIP
19-year old outfielder has controlled the zone nicely throughout his rookie ball career
Dionis Rodriguez - 21 PA, 0.263/0.333/0.474, 3 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 2 BB, 6 K, 0.333 BABIP
21-year old catcher has been training for baseball a long time, per this video of him

GCL Mets 4-4

22-year old righty is making his GCL debut after a season-plus in the DSL
Carlos Hernandez - 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R (2 ER), 1 2B, 1 3B, 8 TB, 1 K (0 K/Sw), 8 GB: 6 FB: 3 LD: 2 PU, 20 BF
21-year old righty is making his GCL debut after two-plus seasons in the DSL

Batters

Reed Gamache - 9 PA, 0.500/0.556/0.667, 2 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 1 SF, 1 K, 0.500 BABIP

Just wanted to point out that he’s back and should be playing in Columbia or St. Lucie shortly

This is the second straight season in the GCL for the 22-year old C/1B who spent four seasons in the DSL
Carlos Sanchez - 15 PA, 0.400/0.400/0.400, 1 RBI, 2 K
20-year old catcher is making his GCL debut after three seasons in the DSL

DSL Mets

Pitchers

Ramon Laguerre – 5 IP, 3 BB, 5 K, 4 GB: 2 FB: 1 LD: 2 PU, 1 GIDP
20-year old RHP in his third season of DSL action has held opponents to a .552 OPS (lefties at .408 OPS). Seems like he’s more than earned at least a GCL look (104.2 IP, 92 H, 2.75 ERA, 84 K: 29 BB), so hopefully he’ll come stateside before the season is over
Ygnacio Rondon – 5 IP, R, 3 BB, 2 K, 7 GB: 4 FB: 1 LD: 1 PU
21-year old RHP in his third season of DSL action has held opponents to a .382 OPS. He’s also posted big numbers in the DSL (remember, take those with a grain of salt), but he’s only thrown 47.2 IP in his career to this point
Kerwin Nieves – 7 IP, 2 H, R (0 ER), 4 BB (1 IBB), 9 K, 1 3B, 8 GB: 1 FB: 1 LD: 1 PU
20-year old lefty is in his second season of DSL action has held batters to a .671 OPS. He’s at 17 K: 11 BB: 2 HBP in 16 IP, with only 11 hits allowed

Batters

Gregero Guerrero – 24 PA, .474/.583/.526, 5 R, 2B, 5 RBI, 5 BB, 2 K, SB
