Recapish
The
51s started their second half with a 3-2 win over the Iowa Cubs Thursday night
thanks to some fine pitching and a pair of doubles off the bat of Eric
Campbell. Starter Darin Gorski had his best effort since returning to the org,
holding on to a shutout bid until there were two gone in the 6th,
and he helped himself at the plate by singling and scoring in the 5th.
Gorski
made very quick work of the first 3 innings, retiring 9 straight Iowa batters
as his teammates jumped ahead 1-0. Eric Campbell doubled and scored in the 2nd
for the games first run, and then provided the key hit during the 51s mini
rally in the 5th. Gorski had led off the 5th with a
single and Michael Conforto kept the frame alive for Soup by working a two out
walk. Campbell came through with a two run double hit to LF (where Matt Murton
was stationed), which made it a 3-0 game.
After
Iowa broke through for their first run in the 6th, Las Vegas Manager
Wally Backman went to hard throwing lefty Josh Smoker to end the threat, but he
allowed an RBI single before the inning ended. With the game tight again at
3-2, the bullpens took over and barely allowed anything over the final three
frames. Las Vegas was held hitless (Joe Nathan contributed a perfect 8th
for Iowa) and their pen allowed just one Cubs baserunner.
I
break down the scoring and defensive highlights below, so enjoy!

Herrera led off the game with his first hit of the night.
Eric
Campbell led off the 2nd inning with his first double of the night,

came around to score on a two run double from Soup – Michael Conforto also
scored after walking with two outs in the frame.
