Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies finally returned home and to MiLB.tv for the 4th
of July Monday night, but they forgot to bring the fireworks. While I’m sure
the locals were treated to a great fireworks show after the game, they barely
got a sparklers show during from the offense. Cola managed just one run on five
singles, and pitching dominated the game after the 3rd.
Columbia
starter Chase Ingram has bounced back from his worst start of the year (3.2 IP,
11 R) to post two effective but inefficient starts (combined 9.1 IP, 3 R, 13
K). While his stuff has been getting him swinging strikes throughout the
season, the results have been inconsistent at times, but that could be related to the various
mechanical adjustments he’s been making to his delivery from the windup. You
can see some examples of the windup he’s using below, but that’s varied from
nothing (aka, from the stretch all game), to the tiniest windup possible, and
possibly a few more variations. Given his consistently low contact rates
allowed, I think he’ll really take off once he finds that comfort zone with his
mechanics, because that will allow him to just focus on pitching again.
Anyway,
back to the game… The Fireflies missed an opportunity to jump ahead in the 1st,
when they scratched out two of their singles. Charleston then jumped ahead 2-0
two batters into the 2nd, and they never looked back. Nathan Mikolas
launched a two-run blast that just barely cleared the wall in left center field
(might’ve been reviewed at the MLB level) after Jhalan Jackson worked a leadoff
walk.
Columbia
was quick to get one of those runs back, but Charleston regained their two-run
lead in the 3rd and that was that. I break down the scoring details
with highlights below, so check it out and enjoy! This series continues Tuesday
night at 7:05 PM, with Kevin Canelon (4-6, 3.27 ERA) scheduled to make the
start for Columbia.
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
J.C.
Rodriguez and David Thompson singled in the 1st inning, but Cola
went scoreless in the frame.
Jeff
Diehl worked a one out walk and then came around to score the Fireflies first
run in the 2nd. He went to 2B went Patrick Mazeika was hit by a
pitch, to 3B on a balk, and then scored on a groundout. Enmanuel Zabala added a
hit in the frame, but Mazeika had to hold up at 3B after a hard turn.
Thompson reached on an infield hit off
his friend, the third base bag, in the 3rd.
Dash
Winningham picked up the Fireflies final hit of the game in the 6th.
MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights
J.C.
Rodriguez was at shortstop and made a nice play on this hot shot.
David
Thompson makes a good throw while on the move in the 6th.

Ingram
finished with 5 strikeouts and plenty of swinging strikes, he just needs to
find a way to pitch deeper into game. His first strikeout came right after he
allowed the 2nd inning homerun, and it took 8 pitches to get Alex
Palma swinging.
Ingram
finished off the 2nd with a strikeout of Eduardo Navas to strand a
runner at 3B.
J.C.’s
throwing error allowed a third Dogs run come home in the 3rd, but
Ingram bounced back with a strikeout of Nathan Mikolas to end the frame.
Ingram
threw a perfect 4th, which included strikeouts of Palma and Gosuke
Katoh.
Johnny Magliozzi
Mags
took over with one out in the 5th and left the bases loaded in the
frame. He stayed in for the 6th and worked around a single, striking
out Katoh and Navas along the way.
Mags
stayed on for a clean 7th, adding a strikeout of Kyle Holder to his tally.
Seth Davis
Davis
faced one over the minimum during the final two innings. He started his outing
with a strikeout of Jhalan Jackson.
He
added strikeouts of Cesar Diaz and Navas during a scoreless 9th.
