June Stat Review: St. Lucie Mets

St. Lucie posted a 13-10 record in the month of June.

June

MVP: Amed Rosario.

Fireman: Paul Paez.

Offense

Amed Rosario - 71 PA, 0.358/0.394/0.478, 5 R, 4 2B, 2 3B, 11 RBI, 4 BB, 5 K, 3 GIDP, 3 SB, 10.3% SwStr, 20.5% Whiff/Swing, 3.2 Pitches/PA, 0.397 BABIP
The 20-year old forced his way to Double-A.
John Mora - 95 PA, 0.360/0.421/0.442, 15 R, 4 2B, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 8 BB, 1 HBP, 7 K, 1 GIDP, 1 SB, 1 CS, 5.2% SwStr, 13.6% Whiff/Swing, 3.5 Pitches/PA, 0.383 BABIP
Ten multi-hit games in June, including four 3-hit games for the speedy little outfielder. Patience + high contact rate is nice.

Kevin Taylor - 84 PA, 0.299/0.357/0.481, 18 R, 3 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR, 16 RBI, 6 BB, 1 HBP, 10 K, 3 GIDP, 5.7% SwStr, 13.2% Whiff/Swing, 3.8 Pitches/PA, 0.303 BABIP
A little surprised he hadn’t moved up to Binghamton earlier in the season, but not really a spot for the 25-year old now
Wuilmer Becerra - 54 PA, 0.320/0.370/0.480, 7 R, 5 2B, 1 HR, 9 RBI, 3 BB, 1 HBP, 17 K, 2 GIDP, 1 SB, 16.5% SwStr, 32.3% Whiff/Swing, 3.4 Pitches/PA, 0.471 BABIP
Becerra has been limited to DH by various minor injuries for much of the season, and his success has been boosted by a high .411 BABIP through the end of June
Champ Stuart - 89 PA, 0.329/0.402/0.461, 15 R, 2 3B, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 7 BB, 3 HBP, 1 SF, 2 SAC, 27 K, 8 SB, 2 CS, 11% SwStr, 26.7% Whiff/Swing, 3.9 Pitches/PA, 0.451 BABIP
The strikeouts are obviously still too high, but Champ has already set a career high in hits, doubles, triples, and homers this season, and he’s on pace to surpass his career best runs scored, RBI’s, stolen bases, and walks total during July, so some things are coming together for the Bahamas native. His 80-grade speed also gives him an edge defensively in CF.
Tomas Nido - 66 PA, 0.300/0.348/0.483, 7 R, 2 2B, 3 HR, 11 RBI, 4 BB, 1 HBP, 1 SF, 8 K, 2 GIDP, 12.3% SwStr, 20.2% Whiff/Swing, 3.1 Pitches/PA, 0.294 BABIP
Nido’s strikeout rate more than doubled from April to May, and his OPS dropped 60 points as a result. The strikeouts were again under control in June, and he posted his best OPS for a month ever – only the second time he’s been at .800+ for a month. Seen and heard great things about his arm, and he’s thrown out 36 of 91 potential basestealers in 2016 (40%)
Jonathan Johnson - 72 PA, 0.254/0.375/0.390, 14 R, 3 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 10 BB, 2 HBP, 1 SF, 7 K, 2 SB, 1 CS, 2.4% SwStr, 7.6% Whiff/Swing, 4.4 Pitches/PA, 0.304 BABIP
Got a late start to the season and less regular time in May, but the 27-year old can be counted on for tough PA’s and smooth defense at 2B. St. Lucie has also used him at 3B and in LF this year.
Patrick Biondi - 61 PA, 0.283/0.377/0.377, 7 R, 3 2B, 1 3B, 6 RBI, 7 BB, 1 HBP, 8 K, 1 GIDP, 6 SB, 6.9% SwStr, 16.7% Whiff/Swing, 3.5 Pitches/PA, 0.326 BABIP
Biondi is fast and a good defensive outfielder but limited by 20-grade pop and big platoon splits. Just like Johnson, Biondi is listed as 5’9”.
Jhoan Urena - 83 PA, 0.247/0.313/0.425, 12 R, 5 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 17 RBI, 8 BB, 2 SF, 8 K, 2 GIDP, 8.3% SwStr, 17% Whiff/Swing, 3.5 Pitches/PA, 0.246 BABIP
Still just 21, which is younger than some of the 2016 draft picks playing in Brooklyn and Kingsport right now, it will be interesting to see what the Mets do with Urena now that David Thompson has been promoted – he’s been used at 1B some already.
Luis Guillorme - 93 PA, 0.294/0.333/0.388, 8 R, 3 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 5 BB, 3 SAC, 12 K, 4 GIDP, 8.9% SwStr, 16.9% Whiff/Swing, 3.5 Pitches/PA, 0.333 BABIP
First pro homer is awesome and he’s on pace for a career best ISO and XBH total. Back at SS and with a half-season of High-A ball under his belt, don’t be surprised if Luis has a big second half. Uses the Louis C.K. theme as his walkup music!
Lednier Ricardo - 27 PA, 0.231/0.259/0.423, 3 R, 2 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 HBP, 7 K, 1 GIDP, 18.7% SwStr, 34% Whiff/Swing, 3.4 Pitches/PA, 0.278 BABIP
Tucker Tharp - 27 PA, 0.250/0.333/0.292, 4 R, 1 2B, 3 RBI, 3 BB, 5 K, 1 SB, 6.4% SwStr, 16.7% Whiff/Swing, 4.1 Pitches/PA, 0.316 BABIP
Came back from the multiple facial fractures he suffered when hit by a pitch on 4/28 and was promoted straight to St. Lucie.
Vinny Siena - 31 PA, 0.192/0.323/0.192, 3 R, 3 RBI, 5 BB, 5 K, 1 SB, 7% SwStr, 18% Whiff/Swing, 4.2 Pitches/PA, 0.238 BABIP
Off to a slow start after his late-month promo
Michael Katz - 76 PA, 0.186/0.250/0.214, 9 R, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 5 BB, 1 HBP, 25 K, 1 GIDP, 1 CS, 15% SwStr, 31.7% Whiff/Swing, 3.8 Pitches/PA, 0.289 BABIP
Going 0-6 with 6 K’s during a 17-0 blowout win for St. Lucie is one of the stranger lines you’ll see. Katz has struggled with contact in the FSL and his OPS has dropped with each month.

Pitching

Starters

P.J. Conlon - 14.2 IP, 12 H, 4 R (4 ER), 1 3B, 1 HR, 18 TB, 3 BB, 7 K (5 K/Sw), 23 GB: 13 FB: 4 LD: 7 PU, 193 Pitches (129 Strikes), 12 Swinging, 52 Called, 6.2% SwStr, 13.2 Pitches/IP, 58 BF
New level, same results, although his strikeouts are down a little
Ricky Knapp - 27 IP, 21 H, 5 R (5 ER), 2 2B, 1 HR, 28 TB, 8 BB, 20 K (11 K/Sw), 106 BF
Knapp has gone 6+ in 10 of his last 11 starts, reaching 7+ in 5 of those outings.
Corey Oswalt - 17 IP, 16 H, 5 R (5 ER), 3 2B, 1 HR, 22 TB, 5 BB, 14 K (11 K/Sw), 27 GB: 7 FB: 11 LD: 4 PU, 253 Pitches (160 Strikes), 38 Swinging, 34 Called, 15% SwStr, 30.2% Whiff/Swing, 14.9 Pitches/IP, 70 BF
Oswalt posted a huge start with Travis d’Arnaud behind the plate on 6/15, but hasn’t started since
Chris Flexen - 33 IP, 27 H, 11 R (9 ER), 5 2B, 0 HR, 32 TB, 15 BB, 24 K (20 K/Sw), 52 GB: 26 FB: 14 LD: 4 PU, 531 Pitches (342 Strikes), 64 Swinging, 85 Called, 12.1% SwStr, 24.9% Whiff/Swing, 16.1 Pitches/IP, 139 BF
Contact rate paints a better picture of his stuff than the strikeout rate.
Andrew Church - 23.1 IP, 23 H, 12 R (11 ER), 6 2B, 0 HR, 31 TB, 9 BB, 12 K (7 K/Sw), 98 BF
Took a loss while throwing a complete game on 6/23 and then got a relatively quick hook during his next outing.
Scarlyn Reyes - 20 IP, 27 H, 19 R (18 ER), 3 2B, 1 3B, 0 HR, 32 TB, 9 BB, 23 K (14 K/Sw), 28 GB: 17 FB: 16 LD: 4 PU, 352 Pitches (222 Strikes), 43 Swinging, 68 Called, 12.2% SwStr, 27.9% Whiff/Swing, 17.6 Pitches/IP, 98 BF
OPS allowed has improved with each passing month this year, but Reyes has been boom or bust in every start

Relievers

Kevin McGowan - 6 IP, 1 H, 0 HR, 1 TB, 2 BB, 4 K (3 K/Sw), 9 GB: 3 FB: 1 LD: 1 PU, 83 Pitches (48 Strikes), 11 Swinging, 13 Called, 13.3% SwStr, 31.4% Whiff/Swing, 13.8 Pitches/IP, 20 BF
McGowan finished at 33 K: 4 BB with just 4 R allowed over 33 IP with St. Lucie this season
Robert Coles - 9 IP, 4 H, 1 R (1 ER), 0 HR, 4 TB, 5 BB, 4 K (4 K/Sw), 14 GB: 6 FB: 2 LD, 133 Pitches (74 Strikes), 8 Swinging, 24 Called, 6% SwStr, 16% Whiff/Swing, 14.8 Pitches/IP, 32 BF
The Mets 28th round pick from 2013 has held righties to a .538 OPS in his third season with St. Lucie
Domingo Tapia - 6.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R (1 ER), 1 2B, 2 3B, 0 HR, 9 TB, 3 BB, 6 K (4 K/Sw), 3 GB: 7 FB: 2 LD: 5 PU, 96 Pitches (59 Strikes), 11 Swinging, 14 Called, 11.5% SwStr, 24.4% Whiff/Swing, 15.2 Pitches/IP, 26 BF
Coming off TJS, I wouldn’t expect Tapia to show much this year, but always possible that fast sinker comes back to him next season.
Paul Paez - 10 IP, 9 H, 2 R (2 ER), 1 2B, 0 HR, 10 TB, 1 BB, 10 K (7 K/Sw), 38 BF
Another 5’9” lefty on the roster, Paez started the season on the DL but has posted some huge outings for St. Lucie.
Kelly Secrest - 8.2 IP, 7 H, 2 R (2 ER), 3 2B, 1 HR, 13 TB, 3 BB, 4 K (2 K/Sw), 11 GB: 13 FB: 2 LD: 3 PU, 151 Pitches (90 Strikes), 15 Swinging, 24 Called, 9.9% SwStr, 22.7% Whiff/Swing, 17.4 Pitches/IP, 39 BF
Taylor Henry - 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R (1 ER), 1 2B, 0 HR, 3 TB, 1 K (1 K/Sw), 1 GB: 1 FB: 2 LD: 1 PU, 18 Pitches (13 Strikes), 4 Swinging, 1 Called, 22.2% SwStr, 33.3% Whiff/Swing, 18 Pitches/IP, 6 BF
Rewarded for his strong extended spring training with the appearance when St. Lucie needed a reliever.
Ben Griset - 10.1 IP, 7 H, 3 R (0 ER), 1 2B, 0 HR, 8 TB, 3 BB, 6 K (1 K/Sw), 40 BF
The 24-year old lefty was mostly used as a starter and reached High-A ball in Tampa’s system, so perhaps it’s no surprise he’s thriving as a reliever in his second chance two years later.
Jimmy Duff - 7.2 IP, 9 H, 3 R (3 ER), 3 2B, 0 HR, 12 TB, 3 BB, 9 K (5 K/Sw), 9 GB: 6 FB: 6 LD: 1 PU, 112 Pitches (75 Strikes), 16 Swinging, 23 Called, 14.3% SwStr, 30.8% Whiff/Swing, 14.6 Pitches/IP, 34 BF
Duff has been hurt by a .409 BABIP allowed in 2016, and the .190 ISO allowed suggests that’s not a fluke.
Corey Taylor - 7.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R (3 ER), 2 2B, 0 HR, 8 TB, 4 BB, 7 K (5 K/Sw), 12 GB: 7 FB: 1 LD, 127 Pitches (81 Strikes), 20 Swinging, 21 Called, 15.7% SwStr, 33.3% Whiff/Swing, 16.6 Pitches/IP, 34 BF
Platoon splits are minimal by OPS (he’s been better against lefties thanks to BABIP), but Taylor has posted much better strikeout and walk rates against righties this year.
Mike Hepple - 7.1 IP, 11 H, 9 R (8 ER), 3 2B, 2 3B, 18 TB, 5 BB, 5 K (4 K/Sw), 12 GB: 6 FB: 8 LD: 1 PU, 150 Pitches (87 Strikes), 13 Swinging, 20 Called, 8.7% SwStr, 19.4% Whiff/Swing, 20.5 Pitches/IP, 38 BF
Big drop off in effectiveness compared to where he was over the first month-plus with Binghamton: 11 K over 10.1 IP with just 1 R allowed on 4 H but 11 walks issued.
