Recapish
With
some Major League talent in town, the Binghamton Mets put on a show for the
locals to win game one of their double-header with New Hampshire 10-4 Friday
evening. Juan Lagares and Jose Reyes were at the top of a lineup that threw a
hit party in the early game, but it was the two guys at the bottom of the
lineup (L.J. Mazzilli and Maikis De La Cruz) that came through with the BIG
hits. The offensive explosion came in support of Tyler Pill, who went the
distance for Binghamton.
Pill
induced a groundout to shortstop from each of the first two batters of the
game, but found himself down 2-0 just two batters later, as Rowdy Tellez took
him deep for his 11th bomb of the season. Pill retired 7 straight
after that as his teammates built up an 8-2 lead.
L.J.
Mazzilli struck first, launching a three run homer with in the 2nd
to help Binghamton leapfrog the Cats. Maikis De La Cruz delivered the next big
blow, launching a grand slam to deep left center field in the 3rd.
Both homers came with two outs in the frame, and the first of two 7-inning
affairs took on a different feel after that. Both teams added a pair of runs
over the final 4 innings, but it seemed like guys were already looking forward
to game two.
Pill
ran into some 4th inning trouble, when a runner came home from 3B on
the same play Mazzilli committed an error. He then retired 9 in a row before a
pair of doubles led to the Fisher Cats fourth run of the game. Pill issued a
walk after the second double allowed, which prompted the first coaching visit
of the day, and an arm to start stretching in the pen. Don’t think that relief
pitcher got very far along in his warmups though, because Pill quickly induced
a comebacker off the bat of Roemon Fields to end the game.
After
taking game one, the B-Mets looked to rehabbing Jim Henderson to start a
bullpen effort for game two. I break down the scoring and defense highlights
from this game below, so enjoy!
MiLB.tv Scoring Highlights
Jayce
Boyd singled with one out in the 2nd inning, but he would be thrown
out on the base paths trying to advance to third on Matt Oberste’s single.
Oberste was able to reach 3B when
Xorge Carrillo followed with a two out single, which kept the inning alive for
L.J. Mazzilli. Mazzilli connected for his second homer of the season, pushing
the B-Mets ahead 3-2. Maikis De La Cruz and Jose Reyes followed with singles.
Amed
Rosario and Dominic Smith hit back-to-back singles leading off the 3rd
inning. The B-Mets would eventually load the bases for Maikis De La Cruz in the
frame and he launched a grand slam - I later heard the PA announce that the homer was estimated at 400
feet.
Juan
Lagares and Amed Rosario led off the 4th with back-to-back singles,
which prompted a pitching change. The new Cats pitcher walked Dominic Smith to
load the bases, and then a Matt Oberste sac fly brought home the ninth B-Mets
run of game one.
After
Jose Reyes reached on an E3 to keep the 5th inning alive, Lagares
and Rosario connected for back-to-back (and nearly identical) singles into CF
to bring him home.
Oberste
added his 16th double of the season in the frame – halfway to his
June total already! Carrillo added another hit later in the game too.
MiLB.tv Defensive Highlights
Juan
Lagares makes tough catches look easy.
Tyler
Pill handled several comebackers throughout the start, but he initially missed
this one before recovering in time for the out.
