Josh Zeid returned from his spot start with Las Vegas to start for the B-Mets Saturday night, but Binghamton’s bats came up short against Sam Howard and the Yard Goats in a 4-2 loss. Zeid struggled through a very long 3rd inning, which is when Hartford jumped ahead for good.

Recapish

Andrew Church returned to the Fireflies with a bang Saturday night, tossing a complete game one hit shutout on just 99 pitches, which is also known as a “Maddux” for all-time great Greg Maddux. Vicente Lupo did much of the damage for Columbia on offense, finishing a triple shy of the cycle and with two runs batted in.
Church made a pair of starts for Columbia earlier in the season before being promoted to the St. Lucie Mets, where he posted a 3.60 ERA over 6 starts (35 IP). He owned Rome for 7.2 IP on May 30th, but then took his effort to another level Saturday night. Per this cached cbssports post, there have only been three 9-inning starts with a better game score than Church’s 100 in MLB history, and the maximum score would be 114. Who knows how that ranks on the all-time SAL leaderboard, and it’s not a great stat, but that’s still pretty impressive.

Recapish

The Iowa Cubs beat Sean Gilmartin and the Las Vegas 51s Friday night to even the four game series between the two clubs at one game each.
The 51s jumped ahead with a run in the 1st thanks to a sac fly, but left Michael Conforto at third base in the frame. After being handed a 1-0 lead, Sean Gilmartin came out and walked the first two batters in the bottom of the 1st inning, and both runners eventually came around to score for Iowa.

Recapish

The Binghamton Mets won their second straight over Hartford Friday night, walking off with a win in the 13th on the same night Rafael Montero made his return to Binghamton. Montero’s return comes after he struggled so much with Las Vegas that the Mets demoted him. The B-Mets pen combined for 7 innings of scoreless relief after taking over for Montero in the 7th.
Montero last pitched for Binghamton in 2013, when he was a rising star in the system, so this is quite a fall for a pitcher who is still on the 40-man roster. The Mets are hoping he can regain his form away from the hellish scoring environment of the PCL, and he appeared to take a step in the right direction with this start. He did issue two walks and got away with some stuff left up that might’ve been crushed in the PCL, but he was more effective than he had been in months.
