Steven
Matz made his third rehab start since re-joining the Las Vegas 51s Saturday
night (fourth overall), and while he wasn’t as bad as his first start (in Round Rock), he wasn’t nearly as sharp as his second start (five perfect innings at home against El Paso). Fortunately for the 51s, the offense stayed hot with a
nine run explosion, jumping ahead 4-2 over the first three innings and then
doubling their score with a grand slam from Brandon Nimmo – figures the PCL
would have a grand slam on the day major league baseball set a record for grand
slams in a day.
Nimmo
came into the night with an .897 OPS over his last 16 games and continued to be
a pesky hitter at the top of the 51s lineup. He led off the game with an
infield single and then came around to score on Amed Rosario’s triple off the
top of the CF wall. Rosario came home on a Dominic Smith groundout to put the
51s up 2-0 before everyone had a chance to find their seat.

Matz
had a relatively strong 1st inning, but he allowed loud contact
throughout the start. He struck out Ketel Marte and Christian Walker in the
frame, but Jeremy Hazelbaker connected for a double over Desmond Jennings head
between those two outs. There weren’t many velocity calls in this game, but it
sounded like he was in his normal range.

Socrates
Brito singled with one out against Matz in the 2nd, but then the 51s
turned a 5-4-3 double play to end the frame.

A
pair of walks and a missed catch error gave Travis Taijeron a bases loaded
opportunity with two outs in the 3rd and he brought home two with a
single to CF.

Matz
sandwiched a pair of strikeouts in the 3rd (Ronnie Freeman to start
it, Hazelbaker to end it), but allowed a two out single and then grooved a
pitch to Ketel Marte for a two run homer – Marte’s third of the season. The single came on a grounder that Rosario made a very nice play on, and the ump appears to have made the wrong call on.

Desmond
Jennings and Gavin Cecchini started the 51s 4th with back-to-back
singles, which set up a sac bunt opportunity for Matz. Matz got the bunt down
and then made it to first safely, which loaded the bases for Nimmo, and I
already mentioned what he did.

The
Reno 4th came at twilight in Reno, and that led to some problems for
Travis Taijeron. Desmond Jennings was able to cover for him on the first fly
ball towards left of the frame, but the next one was solely in Taijeron’s
domain, only he didn't see it until the last minute. The ball landed
near Taijeron, so he was able to hold Brito to a triple on the play. Kristopher
Negron was up next and he gave the ball a ride, but he sent it to the wrong
part of the park for a 420’ out.

Las
Vegas traded a double play for a run in the 5th, which gave them a
9-2 lead. Cecchini singled in the frame after the run came home.

Matz
faced four batters in the 5th before Logan Taylor took over for him:
Matz struck out Ildemaro Vargas, but allowed a double (Ronnie Freeman), RBI
single (RP), and RBI triple (Ketel Marte) to the other three batters. He had a cap
of 90 pitches in the start, but he probably would’ve been taken out at that
point anyway, as he was getting smacked around.

Taylor
came out of the pen and struck out Hazelbaker before a fly out to Nimmo ended
the frame. He allowed the first two to reach in the 6th, but then a
double play and strikeout shut down any potential Reno threat.

After
a perfect 7th from Erik Goeddel, Hansel Robles took over for the 8th.
He allowed a leadoff double, but then struck out the next two during a very
strong frame. He was sent out for the 9th and put on a tight-wire
act, but he was able to strikeout Hazelbaker to end the game with two in
scoring position.

The
51s have won two straight in Reno, which has given them a chance to win the
series Sunday. Ricky Knapp (2-5, 5.16 ERA) is expected to make the start for
Las Vegas, with game time scheduled for 4:05 PM.
