Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies evened their series with division leading Trenton
Wednesday night to pull back within two games of first place. Corey Oswalt
started for Binghamton and he took a shutout into the 7th, but then
the Bingo bullpen had a letdown for the second straight night, allowing two
inherited runners to score as Trenton jumped ahead 3-2. But the Ponies bats
finally started to string some hits together over the final two innings,
allowing Binghamton to pull back ahead for good.
For
Corey Oswalt, the 1st inning has been the real struggle in 2017. In
his first eight starts (does not include a bad outing in a suspended start),
Oswalt had allowed a 6.75 ERA in the 1st inning and a 1.35 ERA after
that. He issued a one out walk and then allowed a single in the 1st
Wednesday, but ultimately kept Trenton off the scoreboard, ending the threat
with a strikeout of Zack Zehner.
Bingo
jumped ahead 1-0 in the 2nd, which is how things stood until the 7th.
Matt Oberste kept the inning alive with a two out single, and then came around
to score on back-to-back singles from Kevin Kaczmarski and David Thompson.
Oswalt
needed just 12 pitches in his half of the 2nd, striking out Jorge
Saez along the way.
Thairo
Estrada singled with one out in the 3rd, but Oswalt allowed nothing
else in the frame, and again ended the inning with a strikeout (this time
Miguel Andujar).
Zehner
went down swinging again in the 4th, and Oswalt worked around a two
out single to keep it a 1-0 game.
Luis
Guillorme and L.J. Mazzilli started the Bingo 6th with consecutive
singles, but the Ponies couldn’t even advance them one base during the frame.
David
Thompson kept the 7th inning alive with a two out single and then
Champ Stuart doubled the Bingo lead with an RBI double to LF.
The
Thunder got a base runner against Oswalt in the 5th and 6th
innings, but it led to nothing for them. Then, after just four singles over the
first six innings, the Thunder struck for a triple, double, and single
consecutively leading off the 7th against Oswalt. That sent Oswalt
to the bench for Corey Taylor, who came in with runners on the corners. Taylor
allowed the runner from third to come home on a sac fly, which tied the game,
but also brought the second out of the inning. That would’ve been an acceptable
trade off given the situation, but then Andujar connected for an RBI double to
RF, which gave Trenton a 3-2 lead.
Binghamton
was quick to get those runs back. Mazzilli led off the 8th with a
single to LF, went to second on an E4, to third on a walk (Kevin Taylor), and finally
came home to tie the game on Oberste’s second hit of the game. Kaczmarski
followed with an RBI single, which gave Bingo a 4-3 lead, and they still had
the bases loaded with one out. Unfortunately, they couldn’t add any insurance
in the 8th.
Taylor
struck out Zehner during a perfect 8th.
The
Ponies did manage to add an insurance run in the 9th, on a mini
rally that started thanks to another Trenton error. Nido reached on the E5,
went to second on a Cody Decker single, and then came around to score on
Taylor’s RBI hit.
With
Tim Peterson unavailable after Tuesday’s game, Manager Luis Rojas went to Cory
Burns for the 9th, and he worked a perfect 1-2-3 inning.
This
series wraps up with a rubber-match Thursday night at 7:00 PM. The Rumble
Ponies send veteran Blake Beavan (1-0, 2.70 ERA) to the hill with a chance to
pull within one game of the division lead, while the Thunder counter with Yefry
Ramirez (6-1, 2.66 ERA), a 23-year old righty who is having a great season so
far.
