Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies finished off a sweep of the Lexington Legends Thursday night
behind a strong start from Gary Cornish and Dash Winningham’s second
multi-homer game of the year. The Fireflies trailed 3-0 heading to the bottom
of the 8th inning in game one of this series, but then completely
outplayed Lexington for the rest of the week, outscoring them 18-1 over the
final 19+ innings of the series. The sweep moved Columbia a season best seven
games over the break even mark at 32-25.
Cornish
was very effective in his second start ever as a pro, allowing just the three
singles and a walk, and retiring the final nine in a row before exiting after
six. He started the game with a strikeout of Khalil Lee during a scoreless 1st.
He worked around a single in each of the first three innings, adding strikeouts
of Rudy Martin and Lee again in the 3rd.

Michael
Paez picked up the Fireflies first hit of the game when he lined a two out
single into CF in the 1st. Cone hit a deep fly out in his first AB,
and then had two well struck hits later in the game. He was robbed of a homer
in Hagerstown and has been hitting the ball hard all over the park lately.
The
Fireflies first rally came in the 2nd and was sparked by a Desmond
Lindsay triple to CF, the first of three Cola triples. Lindsay came home on a
Jay Jabs single two batters later for the games first run. Jabs would advance
to third on Tim Tebow’s first of two doubles in the game, and then both runners
came home on Gene Cone’s second triple of the year to make it a 3-0 game.
Dash
Winningham made Fireflies history when he became the first player in franchise
history to have a multi-homer game on 5/29, and now he’s done it twice. He hit
his first homer of the game in the 3rd.
The
final Legends base runner to reach against Cornish came when Emmanuel Rivera
worked a leadoff walk in the 4th. Cornish would retire the next
three in a row, but it wasn’t too quickly. In total, Cornish needed 50 pitches
between the 3rd and 4th innings, and he only faced eight
batters during that span. He needed just 19 pitches between the 5th
and 6th innings, but his pitch count had risen to 92 by the end of
six, so there was no need to push him further. The Legends went down on three
pop outs in the 5th, and then Cornish added a strikeout of Gabriel
Cancel in the 6th.
Dash
homered again in the 5th inning, launching a no-doubter into the RF
berm for his ninth of the season. Over his last 104 PA, Dash has eight doubles
and eight homers, which is good for a .337 ISO.
Brandon
Brosher added a single in the 5th and Cone singled for Columbia in
the 6th, but neither led to any more runs.
Matt
Blackham was first out of the Fireflies pen and he worked two scoreless innings
of relief. Blackham struck out Joe Dudek in the 7th and then Lee and
angelo Castellano in the 8th.
The
Fireflies had one last rally in their bats for the 8th, and Tim
Tebow sparked it with a two out double to left center – his tenth of the
season. Tebow came home on a Reed Gamache triple, but the Fireflies still
weren’t done. After a Gene Cone walk, Milton Ramos (who took over for Andres
Gimenez before the 6th) connected for an RBI single to bring home
Gamache. Cone went to third on the hit and then came home on a wild pitch to
make it 8-0.
With
this game well out of reach (and the Legends likely ready to get on the bus
home), Max Kuhns was sent out to finish off the shutout in the 9th.
Kuhns set the Legends down in order on nine pitches to clinch the ninth
Fireflies shutout of the season.
After
sweeping the Legends out of town the Fireflies turn their attention to the ‘rival’
Charleston River Dogs. Charleston is visiting Columbia this weekend for an
unusual five game series (double-header Saturday), so these two teams will
really get to know one another over the next four days.
