Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies wasted a great comeback effort from the offense in a
7-6 series opening loss to the Hartford Yard Goats. P.J. Conlon got the start
for Binghamton and struggled. He battled through three-plus innings, but was
charged with all seven Hartford runs in the loss, and again it was the homer
ball that burned him. He’s now allowed thirteen homers in his fifteen starts
this season, with ten of those homers coming over his last ten starts (48.1 IP,
1.9 HR/9-inn).
Hartford
jumped out to a 1-0 lead when the first batter Conlon faced took him deep. The
MiLB.tv feed at Hartford is very good at times, but they weren’t consistently
using the CF camera angle early in this game, so I can’t share coverage of
Conlon’s first few strikeouts. After the homer, Conlon struck out top-Rockies
prospect Brendan Rodgers on a pitch in the dirt, and then Brian Mundell went
down swinging two batters later. The frame ended when Tomas Nido caught Drew
Weeks trying to steal second.

It
didn’t take long for the Ponies to get that run back, although they had set
themselves up for a bigger inning than they ended up with. Matt Oberste reached
on an error to start the frame, went to third on a David Thompson single, and
then scored on a double play grounder.

Conlon
allowed a double in the 2nd, but then struck out Dillon Thomas and
Parker French to end the frame. He had intentionally walked Anthony Phillips to
get to the Yard Goats starter, and he did the same thing in the 3rd
inning.

The
Ponies wasted another scoring opportunity in the 3rd. Gustavo Nunez
led off with a single but was quickly picked off at first – he’s made a lot of
outs on the base paths since joining the Ponies. Luis Guillorme later drew a
walk and went to third on a Kevin Kaczmarski single, but L.J. Mazzilli couldn’t
come through with a two-out hit.

Hartford
sent nine men to the plate against Conlon in the 3rd, and Ashley
Graeter provided the power with a grand slam to left center. It was Graeter’s
second extra base hit against Conlon, and then Thomas followed with a double of
his own. Both hits came with two outs in the frame, and both of those outs
coming on swinging strike three, so it’s not like Conlon was completely lost
out there, he just has a low margin for error with his fastball is topping out
at 87-88 MPH.

The
Ponies hit for the cycle as they rallied back to take the lead in the 4th.
Oberste led the inning off with a single, went to third on Thompson’s 17th
double of the season, and scored on a fielding error by Rodgers. Next up was
Patrick Biondi and he launched a game tying shot to right center for his second
homer of 2017, and just the seventh of his pro career. Nunez followed with a
triple to complete the cycle, and there were still no outs in the frame with
the pitcher’s spot due up. When Conlon came out to hit, I figured Manager Luis
Rivera just didn’t want to burn a pinch-hitter, but that was not the case.
Conlon failed to get Nunez home, but Luis Guillorme followed with an RBI double
to give the Ponies a 6-5 lead.

The Yard Goats jumped ahead 5-1
after a grand slam against Conlon in the 3rd, but the Rumble Ponies
charged back to take the lead in the next half-inning. A lot of starters
would’ve been done at this point, especially in the minors, and especially
since there was no DH and the Rumble Ponies had just sent all nine batters to
the plate in the 4th, but Conlon convinced his Manager to let him go
out for the 4th, and Hartford got the lead right back. Have to hand
it to Conlon though, because even after the first three reached and his Manager
was coming to take him out, Conlon stood on the mound shaking his head no
because he didn’t want to come out yet.
Corey
Taylor would come in for Conlon, in a bases loaded, nobody out situation.
Taylor retired both batters he faced in the frame, but both outs came on sac
flies to give Hartford the 7-6 lead they would win by. Nido threw out another
runner to end the 4th, and then Taylor went on to strikeout the side
in the 5th, but the damage had been done.

The
Ponies pen kept Hartford off the board for the rest of the game, but Binghamton
couldn’t get the tying run home. Lefty Ben Griset struck out Dom Nunez and Josh
Fuentes during his two innings of work, and then Tim Peterson struck out
Rodgers during a perfect 8th.

The Ponies best scoring opportunity
down the stretch came in the 9th, but the game ended abruptly on a
base running mistake from Matt Oberste. Mazzilli and Oberste worked walks to
get the tying run in scoring position for red-hot David Thompson. Thompson’s
two hits had extended his hit streak to ten games, and he’s now 15-37 with four
doubles and four homers during the streak. Thompson took a pitch in the dirt,
which prompted Mazzilli and Oberste to try and move up a base. But the ball
didn’t get too far from Hartford’s catcher, and Oberste doesn’t run too fast,
so he ended up caught between first and second, and was eventually tagged out
to end the game.
After
dropping the first game in a forgetful fashion Monday night, the Ponies look to
get back on track behind Corey Oswalt (4-3, 2.36 ERA) Tuesday, with game time
scheduled for 7:05 PM.
