Recapish

Up two games to one in Reno, the Las Vegas 51s turned to Ricky Knapp to seal a series win against the Aces. Unfortunately, after five strong innings from Knapp, the top of the Reno lineup got to him for three runs in the 6th, which was the difference in a 4-1 game.
Although things didn’t turn out well for him, Knapp was very effective over the first five innings Sunday, facing just two over the minimum before the dreaded 6th. He worked a perfect 1st but had to work around a leadoff single in the 2nd, which is when he picked up both of his strikeouts – they came back-to-back against Jack Reinheimer and Zach Borenstein. Christian Walker stole second in the frame with a fancy slide to avoid Amed Rosario’s tag – the throw was in time, but Rosario went to tag one side and Walker pulled back enough while getting his other arm in.

Hank Conger hit a leadoff double to RF in the 3rd – the ball was hit to the warning track, but it looked like Travis Taijeron might’ve lost it in the sun. Conger came around to score on a groundout and sac fly. Knapp then worked a perfect 4th and faced the minimum in the 5th thanks to a double play. Enjoy some Gavin Cecchini action from the middle innings.

Xorge Carrillo singled leading off the 5th for the first Las Vegas hit of the day, but he was stranded at second base in the frame.

Brandon Nimmo doubled leading off the 6th inning and then went to third on an Amed Rosario infield hit. This was the 51s best chance to take control of this game, but they scratched out just one run on a Dom Smith groundout.

Knapp faced the Reno lineup for a third time in the 6th and the top two Aces batters were ready for him this time. Ketel Marte launched his fourth homer of the year to give the Aces a 3-1 lead, and then Oswaldo Arcia tripled and scored on a throwing error during the play to make it 4-1.

Nice flip from Cecchini

The 51s pen managed two perfect innings during the 7th (Kyle Regnault) and 8th (Ben Rowen), but Las Vegas managed just two hits the rest of the way, singles from Gavin Cecchini and Dominic Smith.

With the loss, the 51s had to settle for a series split, which isn’t bad considering Reno has the best record in the PCL and Las Vegas has been bottom three for awhile. The 51s long road trip continues Monday night in Salt Lake, with Sean Gilmartin (1-2, 6.67 ERA) scheduled to make the 9:05 PM start for Las Vegas.
