Recapish
After
both starters battled for seven innings of a great pitcher’s duel, the Columbia
Fireflies walked off with a 2-1 win over the Charleston River Dogs Monday night
to complete a five-game series sweep and win their ninth straight. Winless on
the season, Blake Taylor turned in his best performance to date, but Charleston
starter Brian Keller matched him at every stop Monday night. The River Dogs had
a chance to go ahead in the top of the 9th inning, but Jay Jabs came
through with a perfect throw from LF to gun down Dalton Blaser (who entered the
game as a pinch-runner) at the plate for the final out. Then in the bottom
half, Jabs came through with an RBI double to plate Desmond Lindsay from first for
the walkoff win. Though Jabs is obviously the hero of the night, Lindsay
deserves a lot of the credit for scoring on that last play, because that double
did not even reach the warning track.
Taylor
turned in his most effective performance to date, but he still struggled with
walks, issuing four over 27 batters faced. He issued a leadoff walk in each of
the first three innings, but only once did it come back to burn him. He
finished his night by retiring seven straight on five groundball’s (one for a
double play) and a pair of strikeouts.
After
walking the first batter of the game, Taylor committed a fielding error on a
bunt attempt as he simply dropped the ball after fielding it. He recovered to
strikeout Estevan Florial and induced an inning ending double play. After four
on Sunday, the Fireflies turned two more on Monday.
The
River Dogs went down 1-2-3 after the leadoff walk in the 2nd, and
Taylor collected his next two strikeouts: against Isiah Gilliam and Brandon
Wagner.
Charleston
finally took advantage of a leadoff walk in the 3rd, though they
needed even more help from the Fireflies to do so. Hoy Jun Park followed with a
single, but Ben Ruta (who took the walk) was thrown out by Lindsay trying to
reach third on the play. Two batters later, Estevan Florial skied one to RF
that fell in between Gene Cone and Luis Carpio. The ball probably should’ve
been Cone’s all the way, but he appears to take a route that would defer to
Carpio catching the ball, and then tries to correct last minute when he sees
Carpio bail out. Park only made it to third on the play, so Taylor still had a
chance to escape with no damage, but then he balked in a run anyway. As you can
see, Taylor makes a small motion but then doesn’t come back to the set
position, which is all it takes.
The
River Dogs lead lasted less than ten pitches, as Brandon Brosher led off the
Cola 3rd with his fourth homer of the season.
The
Fireflies offense did little against Keller the rest of the way, managing just
four singles, all shown below. Andres Gimenez had a pair, while Cone and Jabs
singled to lead off the 6th and 7th innings,
respectively.
Taylor
needed just 41 pitches for the last four innings, allowing just three base
runners, one of which was erased on a double play. He added another strikeout
of Gilliam in the 6th and then ended his night with a strikeout of
Ruta in the 7th.
Taylor
Henry took over for Blake Taylor in the 8th, but he’d need some help
to get through the frame. After retiring the first two, Henry walked Florial,
which prompted Manager Jose Leger to go get Adam Atkins from the pen. Atkins
actually allowed an infield single to the only batter he faced, but Florial was
thrown out trying to score after Gimenez recovered the ball and deked a throw
to first.
Atkins
was left in to face one batter in the 9th, but then Leger went out
and got him after he issued a leadoff walk to Donny Sands. The Fireflies have
rarely had to make mid-inning bullpen changes this year, and the Mets minor
league affiliates often leave bullpen guys out there to try and work through
the trouble, so two straight quick mid-inning changes tells you just how
important this win was to Columbia. It may not seem like a big deal, but this
roster has a chance to clinch a playoff spot if they can overtake first place
Greenville before the first half ends, and they are making the push because
they know several of the Fireflies top players will likely be promoted after
the All Star Game.
Matt
Blackham took over for Atkins and he struck out the first two batters he faced,
but Sands advanced to second on a wild pitch during the second strikeout.
That’s when Blaser came in as a pinch-runner, Brandon Wagner singled to left,
the River Dogs waved Blaser around, and Jay Jabs flexed with a great throw from
LF.
The
Fireflies didn’t have a sellout Monday night, but the 3K+ that were there were
rocking the place in the 9th. Unfortunately, the first two batters
went down quickly, which brought Desmond Lindsay to the plate with two outs. He
muscled a single into CF to keep the inning going for the man of the night, Jay
Jabs, and then busted it getting around the bases to score on the Jabs double.
After
the extremely uncommon five-game sweep of Charleston, the Columbia Fireflies
look to keep the good feels rolling as they bus over to Greenville. Apparently
the final week of the first half is in-state rivalry week, as the Fireflies
head to Charleston for a series before the break starts. Still, this first
three-game series could be make-it-or-break-it, as the Drive hold a half-game
lead over Columbia. Gary Cornish (1-1, 2.19 ERA) is expected to make his third
start of the season opposite Jhonathan Diaz (2-0, 3.86 ERA), with a game time
scheduled for 7:05 PM in Greenville.
