Recapish
After
battling back to take an improbable 9th inning lead, the Columbia
Fireflies proceeded to give the runs right back to the Lexington Legends in the
bottom of the 9th, as they walked off with a 5-4 win to even the
series. Lefty Blake Taylor made his 12th start of the season and was
very sharp out of the gate, but then the Legends jumped ahead with a four-run 4th,
and he left trailing 4-1. With two outs in the 9th, Dan Rizzie was
ejected after disagreeing with a called strike three, which caused a few
minutes delay. Rizzie took his time gathering his stuff and slowly walking
across the field to the clubhouse, which is accessed through the outfield door.
The Fireflies responded to the ejection with three straight hits, including a
three-run homer for Arnaldo Berrios that gave Columbia a lead. Unfortunately,
Matt Blackham had a rare bad outing for Columbia, allowing a pair of runs to
score for a Lexington walkoff.
Taylor
retired the first ten batters in a row before his 4th inning
troubles, striking out Marten Gasparini and Khalil Lee (to start the 4th
inning) along the way.
Brandon
Brosher picked up his single in the 2nd, but it led to nothing.
However, Columbia was able to jump ahead 1-0 in the 3rd. Milton
Ramos started the frame with a single, went to second on a wild pitch, to third
on an Arnaldo Berrios single, and then scored on a strikeout wild pitch that
should’ve ended the inning.
After
striking out the first batter of the 4th, Taylor walked the next
two, which is always where his problems start. Lexington took a 2-1 lead on an
E4, and then Meibrys Viloria doubled the Legends score with a two run double to
right field. Fortunately, Berrios and Andres Gimenez were able to combine on a
perfect relay throw to third, and Viloria was tagged out trying to extend his
hit into a triple (this seemed especially important when the next batter
singled).
Berrios
singled in the 5th, but it led to nothing for Columbia and the
Fireflies wouldn’t get another hit until the 9th.
Taylor
bounced back with a perfect 5th, but Cola Manager Jose Leger went
out to get him after he walked the first two batters in the 6th.
Joseph Zanghi took over and faced the minimum over his three scoreless. He did
issue a walk, but the base runner was erased trying to steal second. Because of
a double play in the 6th and the caught stealing, Zanghi actually
faced just eight batters for three innings of work.
Brosher
took a walk to leadoff the 9th, but then the next two were set down
and Rizzie’s ejection delay happened. Once the action resumed, Milton Ramos
singled through the left side to keep the game going, and then Berrios hit the
unlikely three-run homer to give Columbia a 5-4 lead. Viena Siena added his
single in the 9th after the homer.
Columbia
needed an entirely new battery mate for the bottom of the 9th, and
it’s unlikely either was preparing to come into the game even five minutes
before they entered. Of course you should always be ready in a one run game,
but that 9th inning come back came suddenly, and then the inning was
over.
Blackham entered and allowed a
leadoff double to Joe Dudek, and the inning snowballed after that. Gabriel
Cancel followed with an RBI single to RF, and then the Legends worked on
getting him around and in. Viloria
advanced him to second with a sac bunt and Yeison Melo ended the game with a
walkoff single to RF.

After a topsy-turvy finish, these two teams go right back at it Wednesday afternoon in Lexington. The Fireflies will give the ball to Harol Gonzalez as they look to take a 2-1 edge in the series.
