Recapish

The Las Vegas 51s snapped their losing streak Wednesday night in Salt Lake thanks to a pair of two run extra base hits from guys who will likely finish the season in the majors. Brandon Nimmo gave the 51s a 3-1 lead with a two run triple in the 5th and then Amed Rosario made it a 5-2 game with a key two run homer in the 7th, which was the difference in this game. Both starters pitched into the 7th, but Las Vegas Manager Pedro Lopez was able to get his starter out before the lead was blown.
Dominic Smith and Kevin Plawecki connected on back-to-back singles with two outs in the 1st, but it led to nothing.

Wilfredo Boscan looked more like the starter he was for Las Vegas before missing time with an injury. He retired the first ten Salt Lake batters of the game but then started running into trouble over the next few innings. He could probably work as a middle relief guy/long man in a major league pen, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up in a Mets jersey at some point this year.
Smith and Plaw again connected for back-to-back singles in the 4th, but this time Plaw was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a double. That proved big when Travis Taijeron followed with an RBI double to LF that would’ve at least pushed Plaw to third.

The Bees were quick to get that run back in the bottom of the 4th, scoring a run on two singles, with Rey Navarro providing the two out RBI hit.
Nimmo’s 5th inning triple knocked in Gavin Cecchini (walk) and Phillip Evans (single) to make it a 3-1 game.

But again, the Bees were quick to get a run back in the bottom of the inning. Nolan Fontana led off the frame with a double and then scored on a Dustin Ackley single. Dom Smith made a nice stop to keep things from getting worse.

The game stayed 3-2 until the 7th. With two outs in the frame, Brandon Nimmo worked a walk to get to Rosario with Troy Scribner’s pitch count around 100. Rosario popped out in his first AB against Scribner, went down swinging in his second AB, but then hit a rocket for a lineout right at the SS in his third AB, which makes you think he figured something out about the guy (especially in hindsight). Scribner tried to sneak a neck-high fastball by Rosario in the AB and Rosario just unloaded. His hands are so quick that it didn’t matter how high the pitch was – he was catching up to it and destroying it.

Boscan left with two on and two outs in the bottom of the 7th and Kyle Regnault allowed one of those runners to score before ending the frame. Regnault was sent out to face the first batter of the 8th, but he lost Kaleb Cowart to a walk, and then Kevin McGowan took over. McGowan came in and struck out Jefry Marte, and then finished the inning quickly to strand the inherited runner.

Chase Bradford worked the 9th for Las Vegas and struck out the first two batters of a scoreless frame. Bradford blew the 1-0 lead and then lost the game to Salt Lake on Tuesday night, so it must’ve felt great having the trust from his Manager to go out and get redemption in a close game Wednesday.

Down two games to one, the Las Vegas 51s welcome back Blake Beavan (0-2, 9.00 ERA in the PCL this year) as they look to force a split with Salt Lake Thursday afternoon – game time is scheduled for 2:05 PM.
