Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies returned home and gave their fans a great game to watch
Tuesday night. Cola starter Gabriel Llanes squared off in a pitcher’s duel with
Lexington Legends starter Ofreidy Gomez for the first seven innings (both
starters went seven, which is rare in the SAL), and then the Fireflies put together
a five run rally to jump ahead in the 8th and give their fans a win
to go home with.
Llanes
has now allowed two earned runs or less in eight of his ten appearances, which
is impressive even for this level, and eleven earned runs over 8.1 IP in his
other two starts. He doesn’t strikeout many batters (just 31 in 62 IP), but he
doesn’t walk many either (ten in ten starts), he just relies on his defense
most of the time, and the Fireflies generally have good defense all over the
diamond this year (Tim Tebow not included).
Llanes
allowed a pair of his over the first three innings but he still faced the
minimum through three. The Fireflies turned a double play behind him in the 2nd
and Llanes picked a runner off in the 3rd. Llanes also picked up two
of his first three strikeouts over the first three innings.
Tim
Tebow came through with the Fireflies first hit of the game, doubling to LF in
the 3rd, but the Fireflies couldn’t get him home from third.
A
throwing error from Luis Carpio opened the door for a Legends run in the 4th.
As you can see from the GIF of the error below, Carpio would’ve been better off
letting the ball roll through to Gimenez (his momentum was bringing him towards
first instead of away from it), but it’s hard to ignore instinct and pass up on
a grounder you can reach. Kort Peterson followed with an RBI single for the
Legends, giving them a 1-0 lead, but a second runner was caught halfway between
third and home for an out on the play.
Llanes
bounced back with a perfect 5th, striking out Joe Dudek to end the
frame.
Carpio
singled and stole second in the Cola half of the 5th, but he would
be stranded on third.
The
Legends picked up a leadoff single in the 6th, but the base runner
was erased testing the arm of Ali Sanchez - #YouDontRunOnAli.
With
his pitch count at 65 in a 1-0 game, Llanes was definitely going to be sent out
for the 7th, but it surprisingly turned out to be his final frame.
The Legends strung together three straight hits for two runs in the 7th,
which was capped by a two run double from Meibrys Viloria. Andres Gimenez made an amazin' diving stop to end the frame.
After
starting the night 0-2, Desmond Lindsay went 2-2 to end the night, though his
first single led to nothing for Columbia in the 7th.
Adam
Atkins took over for Llanes in the 8th and looked pretty nasty while
striking out two for a quick inning.
The
Fireflies weren’t able to generate offense on their own over the first seven innings,
but the Legends gifted them a huge scoring opportunity in the 8th.
Ali Sanchez, Milton Ramos, and Gene Cone all worked walks, which opened the
door for a big rally. The Fireflies first run came home on a groundout for the second
out of the frame, so there was a chance they were going to blow this gifted
opportunity, but they still had the heart of the lineup due up. Columbia’s
3-4-5 hitters went 3-3 in the 8th, as Michael Paez, Dash Winningham,
and Desmond Lindsay connected for three straight single to turn a 3-1 deficit
into a 5-3 lead. Credit Dash for scoring from first on Lindsay’s single down
the RF line.
Columbia
still needed to keep the Legends off the board in the 9th to win it,
so they turned to the usually reliable Max Kuhns for the save. Kuhns came out
of the pen a little wild, allowed the first two to reach on a double and walk. He’d
settle down though, striking out the next two before a fly out to Tebow ended
the game.
These
two teams are right back at it early Wednesday afternoon, with Merandy Gonzalez
scheduled to start for the Fireflies at 12:05 PM.
