Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies finished a double-header sweep of the Charleston River Dogs
Saturday night behind Thomas Szapucki, which pushed their winning streak to a
Fireflies franchise best seven straight. Szapucki was not at his sharpest – his
only perfect frame came in the 6th – but he was able to get the big
out when needed, and he was able to mix in more
secondary stuff than in his first start. The River Dogs scored their runs
on a double in the 4th that a more experienced left fielder than Tim
Tebow might’ve caught, but he made up for his misplay later in the game with a
nice diving catch and then a double to spark the game-winning rally.
Szapucki
didn’t pick up any strikeouts early and had to work around a hit in each of the
first two innings, but he kept Charleston off the board with plenty of weak
contact induced too.
The
Fireflies jumped ahead 1-0 in the 1st, though they were set up or a
bigger inning. Gene Cone led off with a single and then Andres Gimenez reached
on a HBP. They successfully executed a double steal to get two Fireflies
runners in scoring position with nobody out. Cone was thrown out trying to
score on a groundout for the first out of the inning, and then a Dash fly out
threatened to end the frame with no runs scored. Fortunately, Luis Carpio would
come through with a two out single to give Columbia a 1-0 lead.
Ben
Ruta led off the Charleston 3rd with a double to LF, went to third
on a groundout, and then got thrown out trying to score on a grounder to Reed
Gamache. Szapucki froze Danny Sands for the final out of the frame and his
first strikeout of the game.
The
first two River Dogs batters reached on singles in the 4th and then
Oswaldo Cabrera double them both home to give Charleston a 2-1 lead. Szapucki
responded with a strikeout of Dalton Blaser and would retire nine of the final
ten batters he faced. He added a strikeout of Isiah Gilliam to his total in the
6th before departing with a pitch count of 92. (Note: First three GIF's below are just swinging strikes).
Columbia
was able to get that run right back in their half of the 4th. Cone
singled home Ali Sanchez (walk) with two outs, knocking out the Charleston
starter in the process.
After
Szapucki’s dominant final turn through the rotation, the Fireflies offense
responded with a rally to give their starter a lead in the 6th.
Tebow sparked the rally with his eleventh double of the season but was lifted
for a pinch runner – Desmond Lindsay. Lindsay came around to score on a
throwing error from the pitcher, but the Fireflies weren’t done. Cone singled
for the third time in game two, which advanced Reed Gamache to second, and then
Gamache came around to score on a Paez groundout two batters later.
With
the lead back, the Fireflies turned to closer Matt Kuhns for the 7th.
Kuhns bookended the frame with strikeouts and worked around a walk to finish
off the win.
The
seven game win streak has brought the Fireflies onto the doorstep of first-place
Greenville (1.5 games out), and those two teams will square off three times this
week with the first-half title on the line. First though the Fireflies have to
keep taking care of the River Dogs, as there are two more games left in this
series. Columbia will give the ball to Gabriel Llanes (3-3, 3.05 ERA) Sunday
afternoon at 2:05 PM, as they look to push their win streak to eight games.
