Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies hit the road Monday to start a series with the Lexington
Legends and took the opener 4-0 after a pair of old faces rejoined the team.
Thomas McIlraith and Vinny Siena came to the Fireflies from opposite
directions, with McIlraith continuing to work his way back from a strained
oblique injury, while Siena looks for a reset after struggling to hit with the
St. Lucie Mets over the past year. Siena may have had a quiet day at the plate,
but McIlraith made his presence known with six shutout innings in the win. At
the plate, Jay Jabs stayed hot with his third homer of the year, and Andres
Gimenez connected for his third three-hit game of the month. Milton Ramos made
his pro debut in LF during the game, taking over for Gene Cone, who left
unexpectedly and with no word from the MiLB.tv broadcast.
McIlraith
started the season with St. Lucie, but he had to leave early during his fourth
start when he felt the oblique strain. This is his second start back from the
injury after one start with the Cyclones, but I haven’t seen anything about how
long he’ll be staying with the Fireflies (game
notes have him making at least one more start). Per this recent
Cyclones post, McIlraith throws a “fastball, slider, changeup, and his
go-to pitch, splitter.” His splitter was in good form against the Legends
Monday night, as it helped him induce a lot of weak contact and a 61%
groundball rate.
Before
McIlraith took the mound as a Firefly again, his teammates worked to get him a
1-0 lead in the 1st. Gimenez started his big night with a single in
the 1st, went to second when Jacob Zanon walked, and then came
around to score on a Dash Winningham RBI single.
The
Legends scattered six singles against McIlraith during his six innings of work,
and the Fireflies starter had two perfect frames, plus another during which he
faced the minimum thanks to a caught stealing. He wasn’t missing a lot of bats
early, so his strikeout total isn’t impressive, but the swing-and-miss stuff
started to show up more often by the end of his start. His three strikeouts
came against: Joe Dudek in the 4th, Khalil Lee in the 5th,
and then Dudek again to end the 6th. As usual, the Fireflies were
ready to make some great defensive plays behind their pitcher.
While
McIlraith was dealing, the Fireflies were adding on, though not nearly as much
as they could have. Ali Sanchez and Gene Cone singled for the Fireflies in the
2nd.
Jabs
hit his homer in the 3rd to make it a 3-0 game. The homer came after
Dash took a HBP to the foot, which had him walking around gingerly for a couple
of minutes, but wasn’t enough to knock him out of the game.
Cone
and Gimenez hit back-to-back singles in the 4th, but Columbia couldn’t
make anything out of the two-out hits.
Arnaldo
Berrios collected his first double of the season in the Cola 6th and
eventually came around to score on a Zanon single through the left side.
Ramos
took over in the OF during the 7th, which is when Columbia went to
the pen for lefty Taylor Henry. Henry extended his scoreless streak to 9.1 IP
with two hitless frames, and he’s up to 10 K: 3 BB after two strikeouts during
the appearance. The strikeouts came against Lee and Angelo Castellano.
Ramos
then came to the plate in the Cola 8th and singled in his first AB
of the day. He stole second – his ninth stolen base of the year – but would be
thrown out trying to score on Gimenez’s third single of the game. Zanon added a
second hit during the frame.
Adam
Atkins came out of the Cola pen for the 9th, and he set the Legends down
1-2-3 to finish off the win, striking out Emmanuel Rivera along the way.
After
winning behind their 10th shutout of the year in the opener, the
Fireflies turn to a starter who’s been winless in 2017. Blake Taylor (7-0, 3.98
ERA) looks to finally get a ‘1’ in the win column, and the Fireflies will look
for a second straight win in Lexington against Legends starter Andre Davis
(4-2, 4.60 ERA).
