Recapish
The
Columbia Fireflies run to the top of the division and a playoff spot came up
one-half game short Sunday, as the Fireflies dropped the finale in Charleston
5-1 and the Greenville Drive beat Rome to leapfrog into first. The game was a
tense pitcher’s duel for the first five innings, with Columbia holding a 1-0
lead from the first out of the game, but the Fireflies pitching staff, which
has been extremely reliable all season, couldn’t hold the 1-0 lead.
Columbia
was setup for a huge 1st inning, but then Nick Green escaped the jam
with only one run allowed, and that set the tone for the rest of the game. The
first three batters reached on three groundball singles and then a Dash
Winningham sac fly made it 1-0. The River Dogs even gave Columbia a fourth out
in the frame, as Diego Castillo committed a fielding error that reloaded the
bases, but they couldn’t get even a second run home.
Working
with a 1-0 lead in the most important game of the half, Gabriel Llanes went out
to the mound and straight dominated Charleston for the first four innings. The
River Dogs managed just an infield single during that time, and Llanes needed
just 36 pitches to finish the four innings. He struck out Estevan Florial
(twice), Ben Ruta, and Donny Sands during that stretch.
Paez
singled in his next AB but he was thrown out trying to steal second. Jay Jabs
then led off the 4th with a single, and Ali Sanchez walked in the
frame, but it led to no insurance runs for Columbia. Also shown below is Luis
Carpio’s two out single from the 6th inning.
Llanes
struggled with command for a spell during the 5th, which gave the
River Dogs their first scoring opportunity, but he settled down to escape the
jam unscored upon. Unfortunately,
the 6th would not go as well for Llanes. Charleston strung together
four straight hits to start the 6th, and only a Gene Cone outfield
assist kept things from getting worse. Llanes finished the frame on a high
note, inducing a pop out to first before striking out Isiah Gilliam.
Despite
the low pitch count, Columbia chose to replace Llanes for the 7th
instead of having him face the River Dogs lineup for a fourth time. The
normally reliable Matt Blackham entered and the frame was basically a replay of
the 6th: it started single, single, double, and it led to two runs
for Charleston. Blackham settled down to retire the next three, finishing the
frame with a strikeout of Blake Rutherford, but the damage had already been
done. You’re always in a 2-1 game, but a 4-1 game takes some base runners or chipping
away at, and the Fireflies were running out of time.
Paez
made it a three hit game when he singled in the 8th, but Fireflies
pain in the butt Trevor Lane struck out three in the frame to keep him at first
base. The Fireflies sent a trainer out to briefly check on Andres Gimenez
during the 1st inning and then he was removed for a pinch-hitter in
the 8th, so I’m guessing he was under the weather, because he showed
no obvious signs of injury.
Blackham
went back out for the 8th but had to leave after allowing another
run on a pair of doubles. Cameron Griffin took over and struck out Ruta while
keeping Charleston off the board the rest of the way.
Although
the game was basically out of reach, it was good to see the Fireflies go down
fighting in the 9th, and they did everything but get a run in (just
like the 1st inning, only worse!). Carpio started the frame with his
second hit of the game and eventually reached third after two walks loaded the
bases. The game came down to Milton Ramos, who was getting his second AB in as
many innings, and he put good wood on the ball, but it was just a one-hopper to
the shortstop for a force out.
Despite
the disappointing outcome with respect to Sunday’s game and the playoff spot,
this team should be proud of how good they had to be down the stretch just to
get to this point. Unfortunately for Columbia-only fans, there are several top players
who may be with the St. Lucie Mets once the second half begins, and the team
may struggle initially to overcome the loss of those players.
