Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s ran into a wall named Felix Hernandez in the finale of their loooong
eleven game road trip Sunday afternoon in Tacoma, and King Felix lived up to
his billing while nearly matching Steven Matz’s perfect rehab performance from
a few weeks ago. Rafael Montero wasn’t as sharp as he’d been in his previous
PCL starts of 2017, issuing four walks and allowing an extra base hit in three
straight innings as the Rainiers built a 4-1 lead. Las Vegas made it a 4-3 game
with a two run rally in the 8th, but then Tacoma added an insurance
run and another former major league regular, Jean Machi, closed things out for
a Rainiers series win.
Felix was perfect until there were
two outs in the 5th, striking out five and dominating the PCL like a
pitcher of his stature should. The announcers said he was sitting low-to-mid
90’s throughout the first four innings, but that his velocity tapered off some
in the 5th, which is when Las Vegas finally got to him. Below are
his five strikeouts from the rehab start.
While
Montero didn’t match Felix’s perfection from the start – he allowed a leadoff
single to Boog Powell in the 1st – Montero was looking very
effective over the first two innings. He struck out Daniel Vogelbach in the 1st,
and then Leonys Martin and Zack Shank in the 2nd. He also got some
help from Xorge Carrillo, who threw out both runners trying to steal second in
those two innings.
Montero
issued a leadoff walk in the 3rd and the Rainiers jumped out to a
1-0 lead thanks to a sac fly in the frame.

Martin
led off the Tacoma 4th with a double and then Shank singled him home
two batters later. Montero responded with a strikeout of Andrew Aplin before a
groundout to third put an end to the inning with Las Vegas down 2-0.
The
51s cut that lead in half as Felix reached his limit in the 5th.
Originally scheduled for just four innings, Felix’s pitch count was so low they
sent him out for the 5th. Desmond Jennings worked a two out walk in
the frame to keep the inning alive and then Jayce Boyd doubled him home to make
it a 2-1 game.
The
Rainiers answered with the biggest hit of the game in the bottom of the 5th.
With two outs and a runner on first, D.J. Peterson launched his ninth homer of
the year – and third of the series – to give the Rainiers a 4-1 lead. Peterson
has been a 51s killer since joining the league, hitting six of his sixteen PCL homer’s
against Las Vegas in just fourteen games.
After
that, both sides tossed zeros until the 8th. Kyle Regnault took over
for Montero in the 7th and collected a strikeout of Martin during a
scoreless frame.
Jayce
Boyd continued his strong day at the plate in the 8th, launching his
third homer of the season to left with Jennings on first to make this a 4-3
game. Xorge Carrillo and Amed Rosario added singles later in the frame, but the
51s couldn’t get either home to tie it.
With
the game in reach, Las Vegas brought out recent Mets setup man Hansel Robles to
maintain the status quo in the 8th. Unfortunately, after retiring
the first two quickly, Aplin took him deep to make it a 5-3 game. Robles
finished the frame with two strikeouts, but he wasn’t able to maintain status
quo. It likely wouldn’t have mattered, as Machi was pretty dominant for Tacoma
in the 9th.
With
this series and long road trip finally behind them, the 51s head home for an
off day Monday before starting a series with Sacramento Tuesday night. They are
expected to get some help from the majors this week. After successful stints in
the majors, T.J. Rivera and Tyler Pill are being sent down to Las Vegas to get
more regular playing time with the return of Steven Matz, Seth Lugo, and Yoenis
Cespedes to the Mets this past weekend. Matt Reynolds is also joining the team, so it will be a very full rotation and/or someone is heading to Binghamton.
