The
Rumble Ponies are in the midst of a 22 games in 21 days stretch, so Saturday
night’s double-header was not an ideal time for a bullpen game, and spot
starter Scarlyn Reyes started the night with a 7.13 ERA this season (and he had
allowed eleven runs, all earned over his last five innings). Of course, this is
baseball, and things rarely go as planned, so naturally Scarlyn Reyes responded
with his best outing of the season. He allowed just a pair of hits over four
scoreless innings Saturday night, striking out four against zero walks. The
Ponies bats were quiet again in game two, but they scratched out a run in both
the 2nd and 7th innings.
His
overall strike rate for the night was fine, but Reyes’ stuff was all over the
place in this start. He was hitting mid-90’s with his fastball regularly, and
staying close enough to the zone to keep guys biting, and that was enough for
four strikeouts and a lot of weak contact. He was helped out by a very
aggressive Fisher Cats lineup in game two, and the Rumble Ponies staff as a
group needed just 89 pitches for the seven-inning shutout. He struck out Harold
Ramirez during a perfect 1st.

The
Ponies got on the board in the 2nd when David Thompson doubled and
L.J. Mazzilli singled him home. It was Thompson’s 16th double of the
season and pushed his hit streak to eight straight.

Reyes
worked around a leadoff double in the 2nd and a two out single in
the 3rd. He struck out Gunnar Heidt twice over his final three
frames, and then got revenge with a strikeout against Ryan McBroom (who hit the
double) in the 4th before exiting.

Oberste had the only Bingo hit between the 2nd and 7th innings,
a single through the middle in the 3rd.

Griset took over for Reyes in the 5th and vultured a win with two
perfect innings. He’d strikeout Alex Monsalve, Jake Thomas, and Richard Urena over
his two innings of work.
Colton
Plaia started the 7th inning with a single and eventually came
around to score an insurance run. After a passed ball, Tyler Moore singled
Plaia to third, and then Dale Burdick walked to load the bases. Plaia
eventually came home on a Kevin Kaczmarski groundout, but that was all
Binghamton could get out of the frame.

The
Ponies turned to Cory Burns to finish the double-header sweep. He’s had some
struggles lately, but he threw a perfect frame, making a nice play along the
way.
Binghamton
will look to finish the weekend with a series win behind Mickey Jannis on
Sunday afternoon, game time scheduled for 1:35 PM.
