Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies unexpectedly lost starting pitcher Corey Oswalt due to
a possible injury after just one inning Thursday night, which forced the
bullpen into unexpected early action, and the Richmond Flying Squirrels took
advantage of that opportunity for a 6-3 win. Richmond scored all of their runs
against Kelly Secrest in the 2nd, and then the Binghamton bullpen
went into shutdown mode, but the Ponies offense disappeared after the 3rd
inning.
The
loss in the game is really secondary to the potential loss of Corey Oswalt.
There’s no point in speculating what the problem could be, but the Binghamton
radio did say that he “experienced discomfort” while warming up before the 2nd
inning, which is why they took him out of the game. He struck out Slade
Heathcott during a perfect 1st before leaving.
After
their starter gave them a strong 1st inning, the Rumbles went out
and gave their starter a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the frame. Tomas Nido
launched his fifth homer of the year with two outs for the run.
The
umpires gave Kelly Secrest as much time as he needed to get ready, but
apparently he needed even more time than that. Secrest allowed two doubles and
two homers in the 2nd (Heathcott hit another), as the Flying
Squirrels jumped out to a 6-1 lead.
Binghamton
put together one last offensive outburst in the 3rd, but then
managed just one base runner on a walk over the final six innings. Champ Stuart
and Luis Guillorme led off the 3rd with back-to-back singles ahead
of Nido, who came through with his tenth double of the season to bring home
Champ. Guillorme came home on a sac fly to make it 6-3, and that’s where the
game stayed until it was over.
Ben
Griset, Corey Taylor and Cory Burns held Richmond hitless over the rest of the
game, but, as mentioned, Binghamton was equally hitless during that time. It must’ve
become a dreadfully boring game, especially after the 2nd inning
outburst for Richmond made this game feel like it was already out of reach.
After
an uncommon series loss, the Rumble Ponies head on the road to Harrisburg to
start a weekend series with the Senators. Mickey Jannis (4-1, 3.74 ERA) is
scheduled to start the opener for Binghamton opposite Derek Eitel (1-2, 2.89
ERA), with game time set for 7:00 PM.
