Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s held on to win a tight game in Tacoma Saturday night, something
that hasn’t happened too often for Las Vegas lately. The 51s used a four-run 6th
to propel them into the lead and their bullpen protected a one run lead for the
final three innings to clinch the win.
Tacoma
jumped ahead early in this game when 51s killer D.J. Peterson launched a two
run homer in the 1st. The Rainiers had Sean Gilmartin on the ropes
in the 1st and 3rd innings, but Gilmartin limited the
damage to three runs over his five innings of work.
Josh
Rodriguez got one of those runs back with his first of three extra base hits in
the 2nd, a solo blast to left center field.
Brandon
Nimmo singled in the 51s 3rd, but it led to nothing.
After
Tacoma extended their lead to 3-1 in the 3rd, the 51s missed a good
chance to score with two outs in the 4th. J Rod doubled to keep the
frame alive but was thrown out trying to score on a Desmond Jennings single.
Las
Vegas took control of the game in the 6th on a rally sparked by a
leadoff single from Amed Rosario. The Rainiers made a pitching change after
Dominic Smith’s AB, but it did not work out. Rosario came around to score on a
Kevin Plawecki double, which was the first of three straight extra base hits.
Travis Taijeron doubled Plaw home and then trotted home on J Rod’s second homer
of the game.
Ben
Rowen took over for the 51s in the 6th but ran into two out trouble.
The Rainiers got one run back on three straight singles before Rowen could end
the frame.
Dominic
Smith extended his hit streak to seven straight in the 7th, but it
led to nothing for Las Vegas.
Erik
Goeddel took over for Rowen in the 7th and ended up striking out
three of six batters faced over his 1.2 IP. He’s allowed just four runs on
eleven hits over his last 14.2 IP, a span that stretches back to May 14th,
so it’s been a huge turnaround for Goeddel this year – his ERA has improved
from 12.00 before that appearance to 6.75 after Saturday’s outing.
Chase
Bradford took over for Goeddel with two gone in the 8th and struck
out Peterson to end the frame. Bradford added a strikeout of Daniel Vogelbach
during a perfect 9th to seal the win. He earned his ninth save of
the year on the 51s 25th win.
With
the series split at one win apiece, these two teams will turn to two guys with
major league experience for the rubber match Sunday at 4:35 PM. The 51s are
sending Rafael Montero (0-1, 1.57 ERA in the PCL this year) to the hill, a guy
who’s struggled to make the jump to the majors, while the Rainiers counter with
six-time All-Star and former Cy Young award winner Felix Hernandez, who is
coming back from a shoulder injury that’s had him sidelined since April.
