Recapish

The Las Vegas 51s evened their series in Reno up with an offensive explosion Friday night, scoring 11 runs on 18 hits even though 14 of those hits were just singles. Although he was two-for-two at the plate in the game, 51s starter Wilfredo Boscan was removed for a pinch-hitter in a close game during the 6th, which immediately paid dividends when Jayce Boyd singled home a run. The early exit left the 51s bullpen with 12 outs to get, which nearly backfired multiple times, as Kevin McGowan and Alberto Baldonado were pushed to go more than an inning. Fortunately, Baldonado bailed McGowan out of a bases loaded situation in the 7th, and then stranded a runner on second with the game still close in the 8th. Then Las Vegas sent 11 men to the plate in the 9th to put this game out of reach.
The 51s struck first when they scored a run with two outs in the 2nd. Gavin Cecchini, Victor Cruzado, and Wilfredo Boscan strung together three straight singles to make it 1-0, although the inning probably should’ve ended on the Cruzado ‘hit’.

Cruzado added another hit later in the game

Boscan went 2-2

Amed Rosario flashed the leather in the 2nd, but back-to-back two out hits from Reno tied the game at one.

Kevin Plawecki put the 51s back on top with a solo blast in the 3rd – another run scored with two outs.

Oswald Arcia answered back with a 481’ blast in the Reno half of the 3rd, which came with two outs in the frame. The Aces jumped ahead on a Carlos Rivero homer in the 4th and, you guessed it, there were two outs in the inning when he hit it.

Rosario in the fourth

Smith in the fifth

In the 51s 6th, Las Vegas finally broke through for some runs before two outs were recorded. Desmond Jennings worked a leadoff walk and then scored on a Josh Rodriguez RBI double to LF. After a pitching change, Gavin Cecchini connected for an RBI double of his own, which put the 51s up 4-3. The Boyd pinch-hit single came two batters later, and the inning might’ve kept going if not for a weird 6-4-5 double play to suddenly end the threat.

Kevin McGowan was first out of the 51s pen and he worked a quick and perfect 6th, striking out Jeremy Hazelbaker and Socrates Brito along the way.

Nimmo recorded the final out

Unfortunately McGowan ran into trouble when three straight reached to load the bases with one out in the 7th. That’s when Baldonado took over and struck out Oswaldo Arcia for a huge second out. The inning ended on a grounder hit right at Rosario for a force out. Baldonado allowed a solo blast in the 8th, which made this a 5-4 game, but he also added a strikeout of Kristopher Negron and ended the frame with a pop out induced.

Replay

After a missed opportunity to add insurance runs in the 8th, the 51s had more incentive to do so with their lead down to 5-4 heading to the 9th. They went 7-10 with a walk (Dom Smith’s first PA) and a homer in the frame, but I’ll let the GIF’s tell the story.

Rosario picked up his first hit of the series leading off the frame

After a Dom Smith walk, Plawecki singled to load the bases

PH Xorge Carrillo followed with a two run single to right center

Then J Rod doubled the lead with this monster shot over the 424' marking

The 51s weren't done though, as Cecchini kept the inning going with a single

After Reno finally recorded a pair of outs, Nimmo singled Cecchini home from second

Finally, Rosario finished the inning 2-2

With the game more-or-less out of hand, the 51s sent Chase Bradford out for the 9th, and he finished the game with a strikeout of Christian Walker.

Cecchini

This series heats up Saturday night as Steven Matz continues his rehab for Las Vegas. He’s making his third rehab start for the 51s and fourth overall, and it will hopefully be his last (ever). Game time is scheduled for 10:05 PM, and the 51s will be facing Reno starter Eric Jokisch (3-2, 6.86 ERA).
