Recapish
The
Las Vegas 51s let another win slip away in Salt Lake Tuesday night, dropping a
second straight to the Bees after holding a lead in both. Rafael Montero and
Doug Fister dueled it out for five innings (Montero lasted seven), and the 51s
held a 1-0 edge when they had both left the game, but the Las Vegas pen
couldn’t hold onto it.
Rafael
Montero allowed just three singles and two walks during his seven innings,
racking up eight strikeouts along the way. Although the PCL is a tough league
for pitchers, comparing this Bees lineup to even the lowly Padres
lineup Montero faced during his most recent major league should go a long
way towards explaining why he has trouble in the majors. There may be a mental
aspect to it, but the difference in talent he’s facing is significant enough to
be the main reason. The easiest out in that San Diego lineup (Austin Hedges)
has a .900+ OPS in the PCL.
Las
Vegas jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st, which was fortunate,
because Fister didn’t take long to settle into this game, retiring 13 of the
final 15 batters he saw. Brandon Nimmo worked a leadoff walk but was replaced
on the bases after a force out. Amed Rosario went to third on a Dom Smith
single and then scored on a Kevin Plawecki RBI hit. The 51s had Fister on the
ropes, but he struck out the final two in the 1st – starting with
those two, Fister would strikeout seven of ten Las Vegas batters.

Montero
picked up a strikeout of former Mets prospect Jefry Marte during a quick 1st.

The
Bees connected for back-to-back singles leading off the 2nd, but
another former Mets prospect, Cesar Puello, grounded into a double play to help
Montero through the frame.
Montero
made it eight straight retired when he set down the Bees in order during the 3rd
and 4th innings. Montero added strikeouts of Matt Williams and
Sherman Johnson in the 3rd, and then Kaleb Cowart and Marte again in
the 4th.

Cruzado led off the 51s 5th with a single to CF but was erased on a
double play.

After
walking the leadoff batter in the bottom of the 5th, Montero bounced
back with a strikeout of Puello before a pair of groundouts ended the inning. Amed Rosario didn’t need leather to make a great play in the frame.

The
51s managed a hit in each of the next three innings but nothing else. Smith
picked up a pair of singles off the lefty reliever and Gavin Cecchini connected
for his 14th double of the season.

Salt
Lake’s leadoff batter reached again in the 6th and the Bees were
able to advance him to third with two outs, but then Marte went down looking
for a third time to end the threat.

Montero
walked Carlos Perez again in the 7th (both of his walks came against
Perez), but again followed the walk up with a strikeout of Cesar Puello.
Hansel
Robles allowed some loud outs in the 8th, but he set down the Bees
in order during the frame. Closer Chase Bradford was sent out for the 9th
but couldn’t hold onto a 1-0 lead. He allowed a homer to Jefry Marte and then Perez
tripled off the RF wall to set up the winning run – a lot of guys would’ve
scored on the triple after the ball bounced so far from Nimmo. After struggling
against Montero all night, Cesar Puello got one last chance to hurt his former
team and he came through with a game winning RBI single to RF (would’ve been
extra bases if not a walkoff).

After
blowing two straight games in Salt Lake, the 51s turn to Wilfredo Boscan (1-3,
4.54 ERA) to get them back on the right track Wednesday night, with game time
scheduled for 9:05 PM.
