The
amateur draft starts tonight! The Mets just barely have 3 picks in the top-100:
#20, 59, and 97. I’m sure there will be a lot of coverage put together on the players
the Mets choose, so I won’t be spending any time doing that here this year – don’t
have the time anyway.
The Mets chose David Peterson and Mark Vientos with their first two picks.
There will be plenty printed around the web about these two, but quick summary of what I've read about them so far and my initial reactions. Peterson is 89-94 from the left side and flashes a nice slider and changeup (not thrown as often in College), with a show-me curve he'll either have to scrap or work on a lot. The general consensus appears to be that the Mets got great value with this pick and that Peterson has a major league arm. I know very little about these draft guys, but he seems like a safe choice for the Mets first round pick, as I'm guessing there were some higher upside (maybe)/riskier profile players left they could've taken. The fastball should be more consistent mid-to-low 90's as his arm strength improves, and if the slider and change become more consistent weapons, then Peterson could have mid-rotation upside (maybe better). If not both, and the curve doesn't improve a lot, then he still has value out of the pen. With respect to the current state of his secondaries, I refer you to Jeff P, "Flashes plus is not plus."

VIDEO | Incredible effort on the mound by David Peterson as he strikes out 20 in a complete game shutout of ASU! https://t.co/Y7p3b7QEDF— Oregon Duck Baseball (@OregonBaseball) April 29, 2017
Mark Vientos is a 17-year old, 6'4 string bean who profiles as a future corner (3B likely to be tried first) even though he played SS in high school, and is a bat-first prospect with quick hands and power potential (video here). I really like this pick, and he seems like more of the higher upside/riskier profile choice, which makes me appreciate the Peterson pick a lot more.
Overall I think the Mets had a really good first night of the draft. The Mets used their first pick on a young lefty who should move through the system quickly and is expected to reach the majors, and their second pick on a high school bat with a lot of upside, which is always fun to have in the system (see Desmond Lindsay, who the Mets took with the 53rd pick two years ago).
The Las Vegas 51s are expecting the return of Tyler Pill, T.J. Rivera, and Matt Reynolds this week, but Manager Pedro Lopez isn’t sure what the initial playing time rotation will be. Rivera to third and Reynolds in LF seems most likely, but the 51s may need to send at least one person to Binghamton to make room for everyone in the rotation.
The Mets announced the signing of Daniel Bard to a minor league contract. The former major league reliever found a lot of success with Boston from 2009-11, but hasn't been able to harness his stuff since, posting high walk rates and even higher ERA's as low as A-ball since his peak. Apparently, he's changed his delivery, so maybe this time the comeback will succeed. #YCPB
