Recapish
The
Binghamton Rumble Ponies welcomed Mickey Jannis back to the rotation and got
back to their winning ways Friday night in their home opener with Portland. The
Sea Dogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st behind Rafael Devers
ninth homer of the year, but then Jannis shut them down through the 6th
as the Rumble Ponies built a 7-2 lead. Bingo reliever Ben Griset stumbled when
asked to go a second inning and finish the game, but Cory Burns was able to
come in and put out the fire in time for the 30th Rumble Ponies win
of the year.
Jannis
allowed a leadoff double to Danny Mars, the Devers homer, and then a Nick
Longhi single in the 1st, so things looked bleak in his return to
the Bingo rotation (he had been on the DL since his last start on 5/17). But
then Jeremy Barfield went down looking, Longhi was erased on the bases to end
the 1st, and Jannis settled down to face just two over the minimum
during his final five innings of work.
Kevin
Kaczmarski’s bat started to heat up in May and he’s taking his hot streak with
him into June. He collected his third three-hit game of the past eight days
Friday night, and his night started with a single in the 1st.
Kevin
Taylor sparked the first Bingo rally with a leadoff single in the 2nd.
David Thompson singled him to second and then a Colton Plaia HBP loaded the
bases with one out. Champ Stuart was up next and he came through with his only hit
of the game, a two run double that tied the game at two.
Kacz’s
second hit came leading off the 3rd, and he quickly came around to
score on a Cody Decker double. Decker came home on a wild pitch with Thompson
at the plate, though he could’ve waited and walked home on Thompson’s ninth
double of the season.
Jannis
struck out two but had to work around a HBP in the 2nd. He added two
more strikeouts in the 3rd and another in the 6th as he
put together a streak of 13 straight set down, which was broken when Devers
singled to LF with two outs in the 6th. Jannis then finished his
night with a strikeout of Longhi to end the frame.
Kaczmarski
ignited another mini-rally with a leadoff single in the 5th. Kacz
advanced to second on a passed ball, to third on a groundout, and then scored
on Thompson’s third hit of the game. Colton Plaia knocked in Thompson two
batters later to make it a 6-2 game.
Bingo
would scratch out one more run in the 6th. Biondi worked a walk
leading off, went to third on a Luis Guillorme single, and then scored on a
Cody Decker sac fly.
Luis
Mateo was the first out of the Bingo bullpen and he worked a perfect inning,
striking out Josh Tobias along the way. Ben Griset took over for the 8th
and worked around a two out walk for a scoreless frame. Given the 7-2 lead,
Bingo Manager Luis Rojas tried to get a second inning out of the lefty Griset
but Griset allowed three hits to four batters in the 9th, with
Jeremy Barfield and Mike Olt connecting for RBI doubles. Rojas then brought in Cory
Burns and he quickly picked up the final two outs of the game.
Although
this Portland team is very talented, they don’t have a great team record
(23-27), and the Rumble Ponies have had their number this year, so Binghamton
will look to keep improving their record with two more against Portland on
Saturday. The Ponies should expect some good pitching, as Seth Lugo (0-1, 4.50
ERA) and P.J. Conlon (5-3, 3.47 ERA) are expected to start, with game one scheduled
for 5:35 PM.
