Mazzoni Coverage:
This is the first time I’ve seen an
entire Mazzoni start and it was great. He mixed up his pitches and location
really well and was in control for most of the start. The one knock on him was
his obsession with runners on 1B, which arguably led to two of the two-out
walks. He was cruising along when he walked his first batter of the night in
the 4th (he would eventually come around to score) and started the
throws to 1B for the first time. He’d do it twice in the 5th inning,
both times after allowing a runner to 1B on a single. Erie did manage multiple
steals against the battery of Mazzoni and Gronauer, so perhaps Mazzoni was just
being pre-emptive with knowledge of their collective limitations, but it was a
stark contrast to the swift pace he kept with no one on base, and eventually
led to a meeting on the mound with Kai. He doesn’t have any one great pickoff move
that I saw, but he liked to mix up the timing of when he threw, and was pretty
quick to 1B for a righty. Getting back to his pitch selection, you can see
below that he really knew how to mix up his pitches to keep hitters off
balance. As a result, he barely allowed any hard contact, with the second
double being the only really hard hit ball all night. It was probably the best
start I’ve seen in the minor leagues this season, and I don’t think he’ll be
sticking around Binghamton for much longer. The PCL is a completely different
offensive environment than the EL, and those PCL hitters will be more advanced,
so there is no guarantee Mazzoni will make the jump successfully, but he’s
ready for the test.
Unfortunately, the MiLB.tv
announcer did not mention any velocities throughout the start, but Erie
provides a good angle for pitch identification. He threw almost exclusively
fastballs and change-ups, sprinkling in a breaking ball throughout the start.
He mostly had good control of the fastball and possibly throws two – I mention
some specifically that were “running to the 3B side”. It seemed like he could
locate the ‘straighter’ fastball wherever he wanted, but when he missed, he
missed off the plate. The fastball that seemed to run 3B side looked like it could
be a good pitch, but like one Mazzoni wasn’t completely in control of yet
(location or amount of run), and he didn’t throw too many. It could be a good
weapon against lefties if he could consistently throw it inside and have it run
back over the plate. He located his change-up well and got plenty of swinging
strikes with it.
