Las Vegas 51s Series in Review: @Albuquerque Isotopes

With gif highlights below
Dates: July 4-6
Results: Split series
51s Record: 54-38

Recaps:

Saturday (Games 1 + 2): Las Vegas Review JournalExaminer, Examiner

MV51: Wilmer Flores went absolutely nuts against Albuquerque – that’s a .938 ISO for the series, with 44.4% of the runs driven in and no mercy shown.
LV51: Greg Peavey struggled early and often after a strong eight-inning performance in his last start, and since the 51s needed him to log innings with a worn out bullpen, things got very ugly. I don’t know what it’s going to take to get him to bring his strong AA performance to AAA, but I’m rooting for him to keep on performing well at AA so that he’s ready for his next AAA opportunity – he was demoted to make room for Tyler Pill on the Las Vegas 51s roster.

Pitching highlights

Darin Gorski

Gorski got the start Friday night and had a very effective start. He’s been considerably better in his second AAA opportunity than he was in his 2013 chance, striking out a batter an inning (22.9 K%), with an average PCL walk rate (8.6 BB%), and five homeruns allowed in 40 IP. Statcorner says his FIP is above average, but they appear to use a different constant or formula than fangraphs. He’s had a high .360 BABIP against in AAA (46 total hits allowed), but has a respectable PCL ERA of 3.83. Here are his seven strikeouts:
Tim Federowicz swinging to end the 1st, which was a 1-2-3 inning.

Brock Peterson swinging for the second out of a 1-2-3 2nd inning.

Jeff Bennett looking to end the 3rd – a double play turned in the inning meant that Gorski had faced the minimum through three.

Brian Cavazos-Galvez swinging to end the 4th after allowing two runs in the inning.

Bennett swinging for the second out of the 5th.

Mike Baxter looking to end the 5th.

Cavazos-Galvez looking to end the 6th, Gorski’s last batter of the night.

Greg Peavey

Greg Peavey got the start in game 1 on Saturday and it was not pretty. Everyone was hoping that Peavey could build on his last AAA start, which was a strong 8 innings on June 30, but it didn’t happen. He has since been demoted to AA and placed on the temporary inactive list. It’s unclear what his future is, as he’s taken care of business after every demotion to AA, but has rarely found success for Las Vegas. He did manage those seven strikeouts, but I was not in a rush to gif them for now.

Matthew Bowman

Bowman got his first AAA start in the nightcap Saturday and I thought he showed he could hold his own in the tough PCL. He’d have to leave early thanks to a nearly 80-minute rain delay suddenly in the 4th, but managed to keep the 51s in a good position to win. The hit total is high, but half of those weren’t well-hit balls. Here are his five strikeouts:
Federowicz swinging for the second out in the 1st inning (and his first AAA strikeout).

Zach Lee missed a bunt attempt for the second out in the 2nd.

Jamie Romak struck out swinging for the second out of the 3rd, which was Bowman’s first 1-2-3 inning.

Federowizc would strikeout swinging for the final out of the 3rd.

Lee went down on a missed bunt again in the 4th, Bowman’s last batter before the rain delay.

Noah Syndergaard

Syndergaard pitched Sunday and had a very strong start. Check out pitch sequences and results data from the start hereThe boxscore makes Thor’s season look worse than Thor is, but it’s still preferred to see the Mets top prospect go out there and have a pretty dominating performance. Here are his seven strikeouts:
Carl Crawford swinging for the second out of a 1-2-3 1st inning.

Brock Peterson struck out swinging for the first out of the 2nd, going down on three pitches. Syndergaard would get a double play from Baxter to end the inning still having faced the minimum.

Delvis Morales struck out swinging on three pitches for the first out of the 3rd inning.

Red Patterson was called out on strikes (also a missed bunt attempt) for the second out of the inning – again on only three pitches.

Carl Crawford was the first strikeout victim of the 4th inning.

Jamie Romak followed Crawford with this strikeout swinging for a quick second out.

After allowing his only run of the game, Thor got Trayvon Robinson to end the 5th.

Thor’s final strikeout would be of Romak for the second out of a 1-2-3 6th inning.

Offensive highlights

Wilmer Flores

Wilmer gave the 51s a lead Friday night with this three-run homerun in the 4th inning.

He’d add a solo blast in the 10th inning of that game to give the 51s a temporary lead.

He hit his third homerun of the series with two outs and Matt ∂en Dekker at 1B in the 6th inning of Saturday’s game 1 to put the 51s on the board.

He hit his fourth homerun in a key situation in game two of the double-header – Flores came up with two outs and two on base in the top of the 7th with the game tied (remember, minor league double-headers only last seven innings). Could not see where the ball landed, but the announcer was impressed by how far it went.

He took a break from hitting homeruns to drive in M∂D with this single to center in the 6th inning of Sunday’s game.

He resumed his homerun happy weekend with this blast with Muno on 1B in the 8th inning of that game.

Kevin Plawecki

Plaw provided the big hit in the 1st inning on Sunday, driving in two runs with this single to RF.

He would drive in Reynolds in the 5th inning of that game with his third single of the night.

Cesar Puello

Puello came off the DL Sunday and hit this laser of a blast to center off of lefty Colt Hines with two outs and nobody on in the 7th inning.

He would hit another solo blast with two outs in the 9th inning of that game.

Matt Reynolds

Reynolds led off the 4th inning Friday with this single to center and would score on the first Flores HR.

He led off the 8th inning of that game with this double to center field, but would be stranded at 2B.

He got things started in the 5th inning Sunday with this leadoff single back up the middle.

Daniel Muno

Muno was used as a pinch-hitter with one out in the top of the 9th Friday and hit a two-run HR to tie the game up at 6 – that game was insane.

Matt ∂en Dekker

Matt got the second game of the double-header started with this 1-0 triple to center.

He hit a double off the base of the wall in RF with Socolovich on 1B and one-out in the 5th inning of that game.

He got Sunday’s game started in the 1st with a leadoff single and would come around to score later in the inning.

He hit a one-out double in the 6th inning of that game and would later come around to score.

Josh Satin

Satin led off the 7th inning of Saturday’s game 1 with a double to left, his 15th since being demoted.

Andrew Brown

Brown led of the 2nd inning in game two of the double-header with a blast to put the 51s back on top 2-1.

He hit a one-out double off the base of the wall in dead CF in the 6th inning of that game – might have been caught if not for that terrible hill out there.
