Recap:
The
B-Mets went into the All-Star break with a big win over Erie, making them
winners in 7 of their last 8 games. The recent surge leaves them 4.5 games out
of first in the Eastern division of the Eastern League, and ten games ahead of
the third place New Britain Rock Cats.
Starter Gabriel Ynoa was very
effective throughout the start, making two mistakes all night – a double in the
2nd and a homerun in the 6th. He’d leave due to a high
pitch count with a runner on 1B and two outs in the 6th, but lefty
Chase Huchingson would end the inning without further damage allowed. Huch, Jon
Velasquez and Adam Kolarek would work the 7th, 8th and 9th,
easily holding onto the big lead provided.
That big lead was thanks to 10 runs
scored during the 4th-7th innings of the game. Erie
actually jumped out to a 1-0 lead after one, but Darrell Ceciliani hit the
first pitch of the 2nd inning over the fence in right-center field
to tie things right up.
Jayce Boyd provided a big, two-out double
to drive in T.J. Rivera from 1B in the 4th.
Kyle Johnson got the big 5-run 5th
started with a single to LF.
Two batters later, Dilson Herrera hit
a double off the wall to drive in Johnson from 1B.
Couldn't get a freeze frame with the ball in focus, but that is where it hit the wall |
Two batters later, Travis Taijeron
lined an RBI single to LF that scored Dilson from 2B.
Two batters later, Darrell
Ceciliani hit a three-run homerun to make it a 7-1 lead.
Johnson
got things started for the B-Mets in the 6th with this one out
single to LF.
Two
pitches later, Brandon Nimmo hit this bomb to left-center field to give the
B-Mets a 9-1 lead.
Ynoa:
1st inning – It doesn’t sound good that Ynoa
needed 26 pitches (19 strikes) while allowing a run on three singles in the 1st,
but he looked better than the results indicate. The first hit was a pop up that
landed in front of Ceciliani in left-center field, and the next two were seeing
eye singles that dribbled into the OF. The best contact the SeaWolves managed
off of Ynoa in the inning was a line out hit right at Ceciliani to end the
inning. He’d pick up his first strikeout in the inning, getting Devon Travis
looking for the second out.
Travis caught looking at 2-2 |
2nd inning – More than half of his 17 pitches (11
Strikes) in the inning came in a 9-pitch marathon at bat against Francisco
Martinez that ended with a popout to 2B. His mind might have still been in that
at-bat, as the next pitch was hit hard into the LF corner for a double. Ynoa
would snap back to reality and induce a groundout to 2B.
3rd inning – Ynoa was looking pretty in control
throughout the 3rd, but a 19-pitch (11 strikes) inning put his total
at 62 after three innings – not ideal, but not like he was getting hit hard or
pitching around non-stop danger. He allowed another seeing eye single in the
inning, but did not let the base runner bother him. He’d pick up two more
strikeouts in the inning:
Marcus Lemon swinging for the first out of the inning.
Travis caught looking (again) for the second out of the 3rd
inning.
4th inning – Another mixed results inning for
Ynoa, as he needed 19 pitches (14 strikes) and allowed two hits, but the
singles were exactly the type of contact he’s looking for: a bloop single off
the end of the bat that landed in front of Ceciliani and an infield single to
the backhand of Rivera, who made a nice stop but airmailed the throw. Side
note: B-Mets manager Pedro Lopez recently told Tim Heiman that he has been
pleasantly surprised with his work at SS, but he looked out of sync on the
play, and I don’t think he got a good grip on the ball. He also picked up two
strikeouts in the inning, though the Erie coverage was following some seagulls
while Ynoa was getting Francisco Martinez to strike out swinging (the call was
that he couldn’t check his swing). Ynoa got Corey Jones to strikeout swinging
leading off the inning.
'Hey, that seagull has something in his mouth, forget this baseball game, I MUST KNOW WHAT HAPPENS' |
5th inning – Ynoa had his first 1-2-3 inning of
the game, needing only 12 pitches (9 strikes) to induce a groundout to 2B
sandwiched by two fly outs to Nimmo in LF. The BABIP fairy showed Ynoa some
mercy this inning, after favoring Erie throughout the first four.
6th inning – Ynoa’s night would end with two outs
and a runner on first in the 6th, as he had reached 107 pitches. He
allowed a leadoff homerun in the inning on a 3-2 breaking ball down and in to
lefty Ramon Cabrera, who stayed back just enough to reach down and golf it out
to RF. He’d retire the next two batters quickly, but a Martinez single
prevented him from finishing the 6th – the single was lined into RF.
