Mets Minor League Highlights (in gifs!) - June 26, 2014

There were three Mets minor league games available to watch Thursday night and they all ended in defeat. The Savannah Sand Gnats were shutout 9-0, managing only two hits – they will not be featured, as there was nothing noticeable worth gifing. The Binghamton Mets lost 3-1 to Altoona, though they managed only one hit through the first seven innings – there are two Brandon Nimmo gifs and two Jack Leathersich strikeouts. Finally, the Las Vegas 51s lost 7-5 to Sacramento in the 11th inning, a game started by top prospect Noah Syndergaard – there are two Matt Reynolds singles, four Thor strikeouts, three Zack Thornton strikeouts, and the game-tying HR hit by Kevin Plawecki with two outs in the 9th.
Altoona Curve starter Joely Rodriguez is a lefty who was sitting at 95 MPH with his fastball in the 1st inning, but the lefty-hitting Nimmo looked comfortable facing the same-handed pitcher. He would hit a screamer towards LF, but it was caught thanks to a nice diving play from the 3B.

Nimmo gets robbed of a hit in the first inning
With Xorge Carillo on 1B (he singled) and two outs in the 8th, Nimmo would line this double into the left-center field gap – I like that he went the other way against both the lefty in the 1st and the righty in the 8th.

Nimmo doubles into the gap
He didn’t have any offensive highlights, and he’d strike out to end the 8th, but here is the Mets top 2B prospect Dilson Herrera at the plate.

Leathersich came in for the bottom of the 8th and struck out the last two Curve batters of the game. First, he got Jarek Cunningham swinging three straight pitches:

Leathersich vs. Cunningham, 0-0
Leathersich vs. Cunningham, 0-1

Leathersich vs. Cunningham, 0-2

Then he got Kelson Brown to strikeout looking.

Leathersich vs. Brown, 2-2
Matt Reynolds hits a lot of line drive singles like the ones he hit in the 1st and 4th innings last night.

Noah Syndergaard displayed his nasty stuff last night, and, to some degree, why he’s not yet with the big club. He has three strong pitches, but he tends to rely on his 95+ MPH fastball much more than the other two, and hitters start sitting dead red. He’d pick up four strikeouts last night (one in each inning he pitched):
Shane Peterson swinging.

Shane Peterson swinging at 2-2
Nate Freiman swinging.

Jose Martinez looking.

Most of the damage against him came on a three-run double that Cory Vaughn just missed catching. Two pitches before the double, he located this 2-1 pitch perfectly – he has very good command.

Vaughn just missed bailing out Thor here

Thornton came in and provided three perfect innings of relief, huge innings that gave the 51s a chance to come back. He would strike out three River Cats (and induce five groundouts!):
Anthony Aliotti swinging.

Aliotti can't hold up on 0-2
Nick Buss swinging.

Buss can't catch up on 0-2
Andy Parrino swinging.

Thornton ends his night by getting Parrino swinging
The highlight of the night was this blast by Kevin Plawecki to tie it up in the 9th, which might have gotten out with a little help from the LF.

The LF nearly robs Plaw

Or maybe he gave it the push Plaw needed?
