Recap in gifs:

Casey Meisner made his second start of the season for Brooklyn Friday night, and he had an inconsistent night, but ending up tying a pro-career best with seven strikeouts on the night. The 6’ 7” right-hander was the Mets 3rd round pick in 2013 out of Cypress Woods High School in Texas, had a pretty successful pro debut in the GCL last year – 10 G (4 GS), 35.1 IP, 31 H, 17 R (12 ER), 18 K: 10 BB, 3.06 ERA – and is only 19 years old. However, the star of the night was definitely Brooklyn RF Michael Bernal, who had three extra base hits, three rib eye steaks and scored twice. It was an exciting back-and-forth game, and the good guys came out on top with some key hits in the 8th and 9th innings.
Aberdeen starter Stephen Tarpley got the first two Cyclones hitters he faced to strikeout in the first inning, but then the two out magic began:
Nido singled to CF. Katz followed with a single of his own.

Katz singles

And Bernal drove them both in with this triple into the RF corner to make it 2-0 Brooklyn.

Two-run triple for Bernal

Meisner would strike out the first batter he faced too.

Viele strikes out swinging at a 1-2 count

He’d give up a two-out solo-HR to Alex Murphy, before getting Hector Veloz swinging to end the first winning 2-1.

Switch-hitting Jhoan Urena is in his third season in the Mets organization and is still just 19. Here he is leading off the second with a single batting right-handed.

Meisner got himself in trouble in the 2nd when he threw the ball away on a pickoff attempt at 1B – Riley Palmer would end up at 3B and score on a sac fly. After Katz reached with a one-out walk in the 3rd, Bernal would drive him in with his second triple of the night.

RBI triple for Bernal

Jeff Diehl then drove him in with this single that got passed a drawn in infield.

Diehl single

Aberdeen relief pitcher Alex Santana came into pitch with one out and the bases loaded in the 3rd – he got Dimas Ponce to pop out and Tucker Tharp to strike out swinging. Meisner then got himself in trouble in the bottom of the 3rd, walking the leadoff hitter Justin Viele before Steve Wilkerson doubled to LF. He’d recover to get Alex Murphy to fly out to RF and Hector Veloz swinging for the second time.

Veloz strikes out swinging on a full count

Unfortunately, he’d balk in a run on the first pitch to Palmer. You can see the ump to the left of Meisner signal, though I don’t think it’s clear what he did from the coverage offered.

Palmer would then drive in Wilkerson with a single to RF to tie the game at 4. Meisner would end the inning by getting Manny Hernandez for his 4th strikeout.

Meisner had his only 1-2-3 inning in the 4th, including striking out the first two batters of the inning:
            Oswill Lartiguez swinging.

            Jay Gonzalez looking.

Gonzalez caught looking with a 2-2 count

After a leadoff single in the 5th, Justin Viele would steal 2B and advance to 3B on this throwing error by Nido.

Nido throwing error

Meisner would bail Nido out by retiring the next three batters - the 2-3-4 hitters - with a fly out, a groundout, and this Veloz strikeout (his third of the night against Meisner).

Kelly Secrest, the Mets 10th round pick from 2014, would come on to pitch the 6th and was a bit wild. The inning would start with this infield single that Rosario made a nice diving stop to get to, though he could not record the out at 1B.

Diving stop by Rosario, safe at 1B

Secrest would then walk two of the next three batters (sandwiching a fly out), before getting Cory Segui to strike out looking.

Segui strikes out on a full count

Unfortunately, Secrest would give up a two-run single to Viele and had to be replaced by Mike Hepple with Brooklyn now trailing 6-4. The former independent league pitcher would get Wilkerson to end the 6th and stay on for 2.1 IP and the win. His one strikeout was of Alex Murphy to lead off the 7th.

Bernal got the 8th inning started with this single up the middle.

Bernal single

After Diehl was called out on strikes, Urena picked up this single batting left-handed. Bernal aggressively went for 3B on the hit (making it safely), which allowed Urena to end up at 2B.

Joe Tuschak would strike out for the second out of the inning, but PH Tyler Moore came through with this infield single up the middle on an 0-2 count.

The play at 1B

Tharp followed with this RBI single to drive in Urena and tie the game again. Pinch-runner Anthony Chavez went to 3B on the throw, which allowed Tharp to go to 2B - great base running this inning.

RBI single for Tharp

After Hepple worked through a scoreless 8th (leaving the bases loaded), Nido got things started in the 9th with this leadoff double – he’d go to 3B when the throw in was too high for the relay man to handle for an error on the RF.

Nido doubles

After Derrick Bleeker had to leave mid-at-bat with an apparent injury, Katz would drive in Nido with this well struck fly out to CF for a sac fly.

Bernal followed with this well struck double towards the LF corner to try and add some insurance. He’d advance to 3B on what was called defensive indifference, but was stranded there.

Shane Bay came in for the save and worked around a two-out walk. Here is the final out of the night.
