Recap:

Mike Kickham shut down the 51s offense and the Fresno bats combined for nine runs, but the biggest story of the game was when top Mets prospect Noah Syndergaard had to leave in the first inning after a collision at home plate – see here. I haven’t seen any updates about his injury, but I’m sure everyone will have a story up shortly after it breaks. Before he left, Thor was sitting 96-97 MPH with his fastball, touching 98 MPH twice, mixed in a few curves at 77-78 MPH and a change-up at 86 MPH (I am missing two pitches right now due to lag at the time). Also, he gave up a double and two singles, and got two weak groundouts to Muno.
As for the game, it seemed like the three runs Thor gave up would be all that Fresno needed, as Mike Kickham was a groundball machine, getting 14 groundouts and an infield single on a grounder to the SS hole. Giancarlo Alvarado replaced Thor on the mound and was very effective until his second to last batter – Mark Minicozzi in the 6th – who crushed a three-run bomb to RF to put the game out of reach at 7-0. The 51s fans finally had something to cheer about and they got very loud after back-to-back homeruns from Danny Muno and Josh Satin in the bottom of the 8th. Kirk Nieuwenhuis with add an impressive solo blast over the COX sign in left-center field in the 9th, but the game had long been out of reach.
Looking ahead, the series continues Friday night at 10:05 PM, as the 51s send Darin Gorski to the mound opposite Chris Heston. Heston has made two previous starts against the 51s this season – combining for 12 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 BB, 8 SO, 2 HR – with all of the damage coming in his last start against them on May 21. Of course, this is a very different Las Vegas roster. Also, his last start lasted only 1 IP, as he allowed 6 R (5 ER) on 7 H and 2 BB. Gorski will be making his second start of the season for Vegas and will be hoping to build on what was a very effective first start. He held Reno scoreless for 6 IP, but was left in for the 7th despite looking gassed in the 6th – o well. Also, after a hot May and multiple OF promotions to the Mets that will clear playing time, Cesar Puello has been struggling to hit again lately - .148/.324/.185 in his last 10 games.
