Recap:
Logan
Verrett was as sharp as he’s been all season, needing only 90 pitches to
complete 8 innings. Unfortunately, he couldn’t protect a late 2-0 lead provided
by a Taylor Teagarden homerun, and ended up the hard luck loser in the tightly
contested opener of a four-game series in Omaha. The Storm Chasers starter
Buddy Baumann was matching Verrett zero-for-zero over the first five innings,
picking up a season best nine strikeouts along the way. The Omaha bullpen was
very sharp too, and righty Blake Wood was throwing 96-97 MPH heaters and 89-90
MPH sliders over his 1.2 IP. Teagarden, playing 1B for only the 2nd
time as a pro, connected with one of those fastballs in the 7th to
give the 51s a short-lived 2-0 lead. Unfortunately for the 1B-neophyte, he
dropped a shallow popup hit back to the mound in the bottom of the 7th,
which allowed an unearned run to score in the inning. Stolen bases were another
big factor in the inning, and both plays had 51s asterisks to be added to them.
On the first stolen base, Plaw lost control of the ball on the transfer, so no
throw was made. On the double steal attempt later in the inning, Plaw made a
throw to 3B but Muno was nowhere near the bag. The Storm Chasers would pull
ahead for good in the bottom of the 8th, when Brian Bocock launched
a two-run homerun to left field. The 51s tried to put some two-out magic
together in the 9th, as Plaw doubled and Vaughn drew a walk, but
Danny Muno chased a curveball to end the game swinging.
