Recap:
I
was very excited when I heard of Michael Fulmer’s promotion to Binghamton and
impending start on MiLB.tv, because this is my first chance to watch Michael Fulmer start in 2014, and
I was very excited. The results may not have been ideal for his AA debut, as he
couldn’t finish the 4th inning, but I think there were some
positives for Fulmer to build over the final few weeks. As far as the game was
concerned, the Mets offense could not come up with key hits all night, taking
the goose egg in the middle game of this series in Erie. It’s not easy to have
seven different players with a hit, nine hits overall, and not score, but it’s
even harder to believe they didn’t score when you consider the THREE Erie
errors – talk about frustrating on both sides of the ball. The one time the
Mets did get a key hit – a two-out single from Brian Burgamy with Brandon Nimmo
on 2B in the 3rd – Nimmo was thrown out trying to score.
Dilson
Herrera picked up his first hit of the night in the 1st, but would
advance no further than 2B.
Fulmer stared his B-Mets career by
allowing a hard hit double into the LF corner to Jamie Johnson. After retiring
the next two batters, including his only strikeout of the night, Erie picked up
two two-out hits to take a 1-0 lead after one. Fulmer would retired the next
five Erie hitters before issuing a one-out walk to Jason Krizan in the 3rd.
He’d finish the 3rd with no problems though, and it seemed like he
was really settling in. Then the 4th came, and Steven Moya gave
Fulmer his next AA first, hitting an effortless opposite field blast for his 32nd
homerun of the season. Corey Jones followed with a weak dribbler towards 1B,
but Burgamy couldn’t handle it cleanly and then threw behind Fulmer as he
reached the bag – it was ruled a hit, which is huge for Fulmer’s AA ERA. Aaron
Westlake followed by finding a hole on the right side of the infield for a
single. Fulmer would throw three nice sliders to the next batter Drew Longley,
getting a lazy fly out to CF on the 3rd. His fastball command would
fail him over the next two batters, his final two of the night, who both
reached via the walk – Jones would score on a bases loaded walk. I'm not sure if it was a slow scoreboard or something we should be concerned about, but the announcers said Fulmer was sitting upper 80's with his fastball all game. From listening to St. Lucie's games and reading about Michael online, I was expecting low 90's and a ceiling of 95 MPH. Hopefully the schedule will work out for another Fulmer start on MiLB.tv before the season ends!
Adam Kolarek came in to bail Fulmer
out, but had trouble getting the third out of the inning, issuing a two-out
walk before allowing back-to-back RBI singles. Kolarek looked much sharper in
the 5th, striking out two as part of a scoreless inning. Hansel
Robles came in for the final three innings of work and was very sharp.
Nimmo hit this double in the 3rd
inning – it was considered a ground-rule double due to fan interference. Unfortunately, this is when Burgamy picked up the hit and Nimmo was thrown out at home.
Yey, maybe they can score! |
Burgamy with the big two-out hit! |
Hey, not fair! I didn't know they were allowed to use cannons out there! |
Dilson Herrera led off the 8th
inning with his 15th double since joining Binghamton, but he’d be
left stranded on 3B.
