Recap:
A
combination of poor pitching and defense in the 1st inning put the
Las Vegas 51s in a hole too big to climb out of Monday night as they dropped
their third straight to Omaha. After winning three out of four games in Iowa to
start this road trip, the 51s now must win tomorrow night behind Cory Mazzoni
to salvage a .500 road trip. Lannan was hit hard from the start, allowing eight
runs off ten hits in just four innings of work. The 51s bullpen fared much
better, although Erik Goeddel allowed a run to score in his inning of work,
putting the 51s behind 9-2 at the time. The 51s offense had a hit in every
inning except the 6th and 8th, so they had chances to
score, but you can’t expect a team to score on every opportunity. Five 51s
players managed multi-hit performances, but the team had only two doubles among
their twelve hits, making the offense work station-to-station all night.
After
Bobby Abreu reached on a two-out walk in the 1st, Josh Satin
followed with his only hit of the night, but they would both end up left on
base.
Kevin
Plawecki led off the 2nd with his first single of the night, but was
eliminated two batters later when Cory Vaughn grounded into a double play.
Cesar
Puello led off the 3rd with his only hit of the night, this long
double to CF.
Matt
Reynolds got the 51s on the board in the 3rd when he drove in Puello
with this single. Unfortunately, he’d get thrown out trying to advance to 2B on
the play. They didn’t show the play, but Reynolds was not happy with the call,
and the Omaha announces thought it was unclear if the SS actually tagged
Reynolds.
Plawecki
picked up his second single of the night with two outs in the 4th.
Allan
Dykstra followed with his first single of the night, but both runners ended up
left on base.
With
one out in the 5th, Seratelli launched this double to CF – Seratelli
had quite a cheering section in Omaha Monday night.
Abreu
would drive him in with his first RBI single of the night.
Goeddel
struck out Matt Fields to leadoff the 5th inning. Unfortunately,
Fields would reach 1B when strike 3 bounced away from Plawecki, and then he’d
score on a Paul Janish RBI double to LF.
Strike 1 |
The 1-1 pitch |
Fields should go sit down, but he ran to 1B successfully after the wild pitch |
After
allowing a two-out single in the bottom of the 6th, Ryan Reid set
down former Mets farmhand Francisco Pena swinging to end the frame.
Anthony
Seratelli picked up his second hit of the night when he singled with two outs in
the 7th.
After
Reynolds popped out to end the top of the frame, Zack Thornton came in for the
bottom half and struck out Cheslor Cuthbert swinging for out number one.
Thornton
worked around a two-out single for a scoreless 7th, and then Chase
Bradford came in for a 1-2-3 8th – the only clean inning a
51s pitcher had all night. The 51s put together a small rally in the 9th that was
started by this Dykstra single with one-out. Reynolds provided the big hit of
the inning, driving in Cory Vaughn and Puello with this bases loaded single to
RF.
After the
Storm Chasers made a pitching change, Abreu gave the 51s one more run with his
second RBI single of the night.
