Key Moments:
Monday
With
the bases loaded and one out in the 1st, Russell
Martin hit a grounder to Wright that start a 543 double play.
With
Lagares on 3B and two outs, Granderson struck out swinging.
Pirates
led off the 2nd inning with a single and walk, but ∂eGrom recovered
to get: fly out, strikeout swinging, and a groundout to SS.
Pedro
Alvarez led off the 4th with a double, but never advanced beyond
2B.
With
two outs and two on in the 5th, Murph lined a single into RF that
scored ∂eGrom from 2B. On the play, Lagares advanced to 3B, and then scored
when the ball got away from Alvarez. He was initially called out but the play
was overturned because Martin was illegally blocking the plate. (Video)
Abreu
doubled with one out in the 6th, but was stranded at 3B – Duda
grounded out to Ike Davis and Flores flied out to RF.
Gaby Sanchez
hit a homerun to open the 8th. After getting two more outs, the Mets
replaced Rice with Valverde and thus began his last outing as a Met. Starling
Marte doubled to LF and scored on a single off the bat of Jose Tabata,
which tied the game at two. Clint Barmes
would fly out to RF to end the inning.
The
Mets kept Valverde in to start the 9th for some reason and it didn’t
take long for him to give up the lead. Neil Walker
singled with one out and scored two batters later on a Sanchez single to LF.
Thanks to a throwing error from Granderson, Andrew
McCutchen would also score on the play. (Video)
Torres came in to replace Valverde and gave up an RBI double to Martin. He
would get Barmes to fly out to CF to finally end the inning.
Tuesday
Granderson
struck out with Murph at 3B and two outs in the 1st.
Abreu
somehow found a hole in the shift to get the Mets on the board with an RBI
single in the 3rd.
Martin
popped out with runners on the corners and two outs in the top of the 4th.
Tejada
hit a one out double to the wall and scored on a Juan Lagares double off the
wall in the bottom of the 4th.
Marte
hit a two run single with the bases loaded in the top of the 6th to
tie the game. Davis struck out swinging with two outs to end the inning.
Tejada
led the 6th off with a walk, advanced to 2B on a wild pitch,
advanced to 3B with a wild pitch and then scored on a Lagares single. (Video)
Murph then doubled Lagares in from 1B. (Video)
Wright would ground out and the Granderson struck out swinging to end the
inning.
Black
got Sanchez to strike out looking with runners on the corners to end the 7th.
With
runners on the corners and one out in the top of the 8th, Mejia got
pinch hitter Alvarez to hit a grounder at Tejada to start a double play.
Tejada
led off the 8th with a single, and then stole 2B, but was stranded
there.
Mejia
worked around a leadoff error and a two out walk to complete the two-inning
save in the 9th. (Video)
Wednesday
Murph
and Wright reached with one out but the Mets left them stranded – Granderson
flied out and CY struck out swinging.
Alvarez
hit a ground-rule double with one out in the 2nd but was stranded
there.
Duda
led off the bottom of the 2nd with a walk, moved to 2B on a wild
pitch, to 3B on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch thrown with Colon
batting. (Video)
Murph
hit a ‘little league triple’ with one out in the 3rd and then scored
on a Wright single.
With
Wright batting and two outs in the 5th, Lagares was caught stealing
3B.
Wright
led off the 6th with a HR. (Video)
Centeno would fly out with two on to end the inning.
The
Pirates had two on with one out in the 8th when the Mets brought
Familia in. He got Ike Davis to hit a grounder at Murph to start a double play.
Duda
hit a two run homerun in the bottom of the 8th. (Video)
Familia
worked around a one out single in the 9th to pick up his first save
of the season (2nd career).
Storylines:
Hudgens, Valverde
Out – Vic Black the Frequent Flier
Not
really sure what the change in hitting coach will accomplish, but it sounds
like there might be more to the story than we have heard.
Valverde
had been living dangerously as a Met (24 H and 10 BB in 20.2 IP) and many fans
were ready for his departure weeks ago. Still, it seems odd timing to release
him the day after sending Vic Black back across the country to El Paso. Black
was strong enough in his debut to get the win over 1.2 IP, after bailing out
Niese in the 6th. Black has good enough stuff to pitch in the
majors, but his wildness will likely keep us fans on the edge of our seats many
nights. I’ll be interested in how Terry uses him – I’d prefer to see Terry
bringing him in to start innings until his control is more consistent.
Injury updates –
Gee, T∂A, EY
It’s
again unclear when Dillon Gee will be able to return to the Mets, as he was
unable to even play catch this past Sunday.
Travis
∂’Arnaud went 1-8 with a walk and a HR for the Binghamton Mets while rehabbing
this past weekend, playing in three games (two at catcher). He was activated
after the game as Juan Centeno was demoted.
EY
had an MRI Tuesday but the Mets have yet to announce any results.
Bullpen
Not the best overall performance
from the bullpen, but much of that is charged to Jose Valverde.
7.1 IP, 10 H, 5 ER, HR, 6 BB, 5 SO,
6.14 ERA
The current Mets bullpen – Torres,
Mejia, Edgin, Black, Familia, Rice and Dice-K – has been collectively very
strong for the Mets from the pen (not including starts): 100 IP, 30 ER, 81 H,
56 BB, 94 SO, 2.70 ERA. There has been no recent update on the condition of
Gonzalez Germen (latest news was about an abscess developing), but his return
would still be welcomed.
Looking Ahead:
The Mets will play five straight in Philly from May 29 until
June 2
Thursday at 7:05 PM – Wheeler (1-5) @ Buchanan (1-0)
Friday at 7:05 PM – Montero (0-2) @ Burnett (3-4)
Saturday at 3:05 PM - ∂eGrom (0-2) @ Kendrick (1-5)
Sunday at 1:35 PM – Niese (3-3) @ Hamels (1-3)
Monday at 7:05 PM – Colon (4-5) @ Hernandez (2-2)
The Mets then travel to Chicago for three against the Cubs
and finish their road trip with three in San Francisco.
Astromets Mind
The Mets and Las Vegas 51s have been overlapping since this past weekend, and I only have so much time, so I apologize for not providing the normal recaps. As I said originally, I do not wish to provide a report on what happened unless I've watched the games, but I will be back at it by the end of the week.
