Recap:
Fresh
off a recent demotion from the A’s, Dan Straily went back to doing what he’s
done in AAA the past two seasons – dominating – as he shut down the top offense
in the PCL over 7 scoreless innings. The 51s managed to scratch out a run in
each of the final two innings against the bullpen, but it was too little to
late in what was the fourth straight loss for Las Vegas. Joel Carreno had a
very nice start for the 51s but took the hard luck loss. Omar
Quintanilla committed an error with two outs and nobody on in the 8th
that led to three unearned runs.
This
game was a pitcher’s duel before Q’s crucial error, an exciting change of pace
for the 51s, who are often in slugfests or are just blowing the other team out.
The 51s wasted a one out, bases loaded situation in the 2nd when Q
hit a hard line drive right at the SS, who threw it to 2B to double off Kirk
Nieuwenhuis – unlucky for Q and Kirk really had no chance. They would go
down in order four out of the next five innings against Straily. Meanwhile, the
River Cats were putting together a good looking inning of their own in the 4th
before Nick
Buss got thrown out trying to tag from 3B on a flyout to Kirk in LF. They
loaded the bases with one out before Daric
Barton hit a line drive off the wall that only scored one. Unsure of where
the ball would end up, the runners all held, and then Brown played it off the
wall and got it in very quickly. A Carreno throwing error on a pickoff attempt
in the 5th allowed Alden
Carrithers to get into scoring position and then come in when Parrino lined
a single into CF – Carreno was likely thinking about the stolen base Carrithers
had in the 3rd.
After
the Q error in the 8th, the River Cats connected for four straight
hits - double, double, single,
single – before Goeddel finally recovered to strike out Carrithers. Q did smoke
a double to lead off the bottom of the 8th, and would come around to
score on a Josh
Satin sac fly, but the 51s offense did not have enough time to mount a
comeback. Matt
∂en Dekker helped Jeff
Walters work a scoreless 9th, making what Russ Langer described
as a “circus catch” as he reached the warning track in CF – back to the plate,
over the shoulder catch. Taylor
Teagarden and Danny
Muno (RBI double) connected on back-to-back two out hits off ex-Met Phillip
Humber to give the 51s their 2nd run in the 9th.
Looking
ahead, the 51s lost for the 5th straight time Sunday afternoon, with
a final score of 10-1. I woke up a little sick and so just relaxed while
watching Rafael Montero’s dominant start and then the Mets salvaging a win in
game two of the double-header – hence the delayed recap. The series wraps up
Monday afternoon with the 51s scheduled to send Greg Peavey opposite Matt
Buschmann. Peavey ended up having a rough
outing in his first start for Las Vegas in 2014 (second overall), but was
having a very strong season for Binghamton before the promotion. Buschmann will
be making his fifth start since a promotion, and is coming off a very strong
seven in performance against El Paso in which he allowed only one run on four
hits.
