Recap:
The 51s got back to their winning ways Tuesday night in the
opener of a four game series against the bees. Neither starter was having a
particularly strong outing through the first 3.5 innings, at which point the
rain was coming down too hard to keep playing. After over an hour delay, both
starters were out of the games and the 51s would pounce out to a lead thanks to
a 3-run homerun from SS Wilmer
Flores, his 4th homerun of the road trip (4 games). The 51s
bullpen was able to hold onto the lead, with Josh Edgin
coming in for an impressive 8th and Vic Black
holding on for the save in the 9th.
Flores
would get the scoring started in the 1st inning, doubling in Eric
Campbell with a liner into the left-center field gap. He would score on an
absolute bomb of a HR from Allan
Dykstra, who hit it out over the wall in RF. Juan Centeno
would tack on a run in the top of the 2nd with a solo shot that just
got over the RF wall, his third professional homerun in 1,219 professional
plate appearances – within a week Wilfredo
Tovar hitting a homerun for Binghamton! After a strong 1st
inning, Dana Eveland gave up a couple of hard hits in the bottom of the 2nd,
including a 2-run homerun to Luis
Martinez. Eveland would give up another couple of hard hits in the bottom
of the 3rd, including another 2-run homerun, this time to Roberto
Lopez. Bees starter Jarrett Grube actually settled in after the rough
inning, retiring eleven of the final thirteen 51s hitters he would face.
Erik
Goeddel was the first out of the 51s bullpen after the rain delay and
looked good, but he took a ball off the foot for the third out of the inning
and obviously did not come back for a second inning. Haven’t heard anything
about him yet, so hopefully it was more precautionary. Josh Edgin looked the
best he has all season, getting the last two swinging on nasty breaking balls
at the bottom of the zone. Shawn
O’Malley got a hustle double with one out in the 9th on a liner
towards the RF line. Unfortunately for the Bees, O’Malley tried to push the
envelope and was thrown out trying to steal 3B, thanks to a nice throw from
Juan Centeno. On the one hand, it increases the probability of scoring at least one
run by nearly 26%, but on the other hand, he could score on most hits to
the OF, and the next two batters were able to get singles up the middle. Black would
finish the game by getting Efren Navarro to fly out to CF.
Looking
ahead, the 51s send Jacob
∂eGrom to the hill Wednesday night opposite Bees starter Matt
Shoemaker. Shoemaker got the win in his last start despite allowing ten hits in
6.2 IP. ∂eGrom is coming off a win in what was an overall very strong start
against Reno his last time out, with rumors swirling around Queens that a
promotion to the Mets bullpen is only weeks away for him. Game time scheduled
for 8:35 PM ET and can be watched on MiLB.tv for users or listened to with
MiLB.com radio feeds for free. If you’re interested in 51s coverage, Russ
Langer does a great job of calling the games on the streams mentioned.
