Recap:
Things
were going so well for Logan Verrett Sunday afternoon, until they weren’t.
After being mostly shut down for the first five innings, the Chihuahua’s jumped
on top with a seven run frame in the 6th, and then took the lead for
good behind a pair of solo homeruns by Jace Peterson and then Jake Goebbert in
the 7th. Hector Ambriz came in for El Paso in the 8th and
finally put a stop to the 51s offense, holding on for the two inning save as
the Chihuahua’s salvaged the final game of the four-game series.
Verrett
worked through the first four innings with ridiculous efficiency – 7/9 strikes
in the 1st, 9/11 strikes in the 2nd, 4/4 strikes in the 3rd,
6/10 strikes in the 4th – total of 26/34 pitches through the first
four innings (Gameday didn’t track a pitch to Noel in the 3rd, it’s
not always reliable) – facing one over the minimum on two hits and a HBP. He
gave up a long homerun to Tyler Greene in the 5th on an 81 MPH
change-up, but was otherwise still effective. Things just got unlucky for him
in the 6th – I’m not a fan of the term “BABIP’d,” but he really was
BABIP’d. He gave up hits to all five of the batters he faced in the inning,
including two doubles, even though only one of the hits was “well-hit” – two
singles through the 2B hole, a flare that rolled to the LF corner, a hard hit
grounder up the middle, and a pop up double down the RF line that was just out
of the reach of the 1B, 2B and RF and then bounced into the stands. Just like
that, the 51s went from coasting to antsy, and so they brought in Joel Carreno.
Unfortunately, after retiring the first two hitters on a strikeout and sac fly,
the Chihuahua’s went double-walk-double to take the lead. Zach Lutz gave the
51s a reason to temporarily exhale in the top of the 7th, when he
launched a two run bomb over the Peter Piper Pizza Porch overhang in LF. As
mentioned, the relief would be short lived, and El Paso would hold on for a big
come from behind win.
Looking
ahead for the 51s, announcer Russ Langer mentioned twice that Greg Peavey would
be promoted from Binghamton to make the start Monday night in Fresno – 10:05 PM
ET start time. It is an interesting time to promote Peavey, if only because the
B-Mets have six games against Portland in four days this week (all scheduled to
be available on MiLB.tv). Otherwise, Peavey has been very much in control his
last three starts for the B-Mets, winning all three – his combined line over
those three starts: 22 IP, 15 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB and 19 SO for a 1.23 ERA. It
doesn’t appear that Fresno has announced their starter as of this posting. The
B-Mets start their double-header at 5:00 PM ET, with Matt Bowman the only
starter listed on MiLB.com
so far. Not sure who would take Peavey’s place starting for the B-Mets, but
Steven Matz hasn’t pitched for St. Lucie since May 13, and nobody is listed as of this being posted – just saying because that would
make my day.
