Recap:
The
BMets won game one of Monday’s double-header behind a really strong effort from
Hansel Robles. Robles might have been due to come out after his six strong
innings anyway – the BMets had someone warming in the pen at one point in the 6th
– but a ~100-minute rain delay in the top of the 7th assured the end
of his night. Portland start Henry Owens had a very nasty change-up working,
but was a bit wild (56% strikes) and had to come out after 4 IP with 89
pitches. Offensively, Matt Clark did not make an out, and provided the biggest
hit of the night when he golfed a three run homerun down the RF line in the 5th.
Cody Satterwhite came on for Binghamton after the rain delay, retiring the side
in order on nine pitches – it took six minutes to get the last four outs after
the rain delay.
Robles
was very efficient early for the BMets, throwing 18 of his first 23 pitches for
strikes over the first two innings, getting three pop ups, two groundouts and a
long fly out. Owens looked even better, striking out five over the first two
innings – four swinging at his change-up. Hansel still had strong control the
rest of the game, but some Portland hitter started fouling off his pitches more
often – I wish I had done the pitch sequences for him last night.
The BMets managed to get their
first run with a two out single from Darrell Ceciliani in the top of the 4th.
Portland only had two hits through the first four innings, but they were both
hard hit extra base hits that were left stranded. Michael Olmsted came in for
the SeaDogs in the top of the 5th and things did not go well for
him, as he gave up the Clark HR in the 5th, and then walked Matt
Reynolds with two outs in the 6th before giving up an RBI double that
one-hopped the wall to Kevin Plawecki. Robles worked around a couple of singles
in both the 5th and 6th innings to keep Portland off the
board. For more on Robles, check out this
recent report by Jeffrey Paternostro.
These two teams did manage to play
a game two, however I was forced to choose between watching it and the Las
Vegas 51s, and I chose to watch Greg
Peavey’s debut over Angel
Cuan’s – neither went that well, as both the BMets and 51s lost. There are
still four games left in the series from Tuesday – Thursday. The BMets send Darin
Gorski to the mound Tuesday night at 6:00 PM ET opposite SeaDogs starter Brian
Johnson. Gorski has given up a few too many homeruns early on, but has
otherwise been lights out, and he hasn’t even been burned that bad by the long
ball – 12 ER allowed on 7 homeruns over 38.2 IP (42 K: 10 BB). The lefty
Johnson will be making his fourth start of the season for Portland, after only
seven combined starts in the Carolina league. He has been very effective
though, so I’ll be curious to see him, though I am mostly just excited about
GORSKI!
