Recap:
In
his first start since rumors that his pending call-up to the Mets may be sooner
than expected, 51s starter Jacob ∂eGrom had his worst start of the season,
giving up a season high ten hits and five runs over his five innings of work.
The offense would bail him out though, thanks in part to SS Wilmer Flores, who
may have been playing his last game in a 51s uniform. A disappointing outcome
for the Bees, as Matt Shoemaker pitched seven very strong innings, striking out
eleven, and they were up 4-0 after two. Vic Black would come on to pick up his
4th save of the season, looking as good as I’ve ever seen him.
The
Bees got the scoring started thanks to a long bomb off the bat of Luis Jimenez
in the 1st. They led off the 2nd inning with three straight
singles to score a run, and added another run on a Danny Muno throwing error.
∂eGrom was able to mostly limit the damage the rest of the way, though the Bees
kept on getting their hits. The 51s started to mount their comeback behind a
2-RBI double from Wilmer Flores in the top of the 3rd (can’t wait to
see that at Citi Field!), but the Bees starter was too good to give up anything
else, giving up only three more hits.
As
if often the case, once the bullpen entered the picture, the entire game
changed. The Bees would try five different relievers over the final three
innings, who would combine to give up five runs and the lead, with Jeremy Berg
taking the loss during a rough 10th inning. Danny Muno, who had
plenty of missed offensive opportunities and an error earlier in the game, got
things started in the 10th with a leadoff single. Eric Campbell
drove him in with an RBI double to give the 51s their first lead of the game.
Campbell would come around to score on a single by Allan Dykstra, giving the
51s an insurance run that they would not need. Vic Black struck out the side
featuring a nice breaking ball in the 10th – got the first batter
looking at one belt high over the plate and the last batter swinging at one
that ended up bouncing.
Looking
ahead, the 51s send starter Logan Verrett opposite Bees lefty Jose Alvarez
Thursday night.
