Key Moments:
Tuesday
With
two outs and Carl Crawford
at 3B in the 2nd, Montero pitched around A. J. Ellis to get to Josh Beckett,
who lined an RBI single into RF for the first run of the game. Two batters
later, with the bases loaded, Montero got Yasiel Puig
to strike out swinging at a slider.
With
two outs and Granderson on 3B (leadoff double), Flores just beat out an infield
single to his counterpart, allowing Granderson to tie the game up.
With
runners at 1B and 3B and one out in the 3rd, Montero got Carl
Crawford swinging at a fastball, and then Juan Uribe
to line out to RF to end the threat.
Montero
would only retire one of the five batters he faced in the 5th, as
the Dodgers went: walk, pop out, Adrian
Gonzalez homerun, Matt Kemp
double, RBI single. Familia came in and allowed a stolen base, threw a wild
pitch, and then gave up an RBI single before finally getting out of the inning
with a double play groundout.
The
Mets managed three straight one-out singles in the bottom of the 5th,
but Centeno was the lead runner (he’s not likely to score from 2B on a single),
and then Beckett recovered to get Murphy swinging and Wright to ground out.
With
two outs in the 6th, Torres gave up a Puig double and two singles to
allow another Dodger run to score.
Bottom
of the 6th was awesome, until they replaced Beckett, as the Mets
started: Granderson homerun, CY double, Duda homerun, walk. Howell came in to
face the worst part of the lineup – Centeno, Tejada, EY – and the momentum was
lost.
The
Mets loaded the bases with one out in the 7th, but Duda popped out
and Flores grounded out.
After
getting two outs, Dice-K hit Puig and walked Ramirez, and then Rice came in and
walked Gonzalez to load the bases. Fortunately, Valverde got Scott Van
Slyke to fly out to LF.
The
Dodgers would add three insurance runs in the top of the 9th to put
this one out of reach.
Wednesday
Gonzalez
led off the 2nd with a homerun.
Mets
loaded the bases with two outs in the 3rd, but Granderson struck out
swinging.
Kemp
led off the 5th with a double, but spent the rest of the inning at
2B.
Puig
and Ramirez hit back-to-back homeruns in the top of the 6th.
Campbell
hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the 6th. (Video)
With
two outs and runners on 2B and 3B in the 7th, CY grounded out to
Justin Turner to end the threat.
Chone
Figgins scored on a fielders choice at 2B on what should’ve been an inning
ending double play – he led off the 8th inning with a double. (Video)
Lagares
hit a one-out triple in the 9th and scored on a Murphy fielder’s
choice, but the Mets were still a run shy.
Thursday
With
one out and runners on the corners in the 1st, Gonzalez hit a sac
fly to LF to score the first run.
After
Granderson reached 3B on a leadoff double/Kemp error to leadoff the 2nd,
Campbell drove him in with a sac fly to RF.
Recker
and Niese hit back-to-back one-out doubles in the 5th to give the
Mets the lead. Niese would score on a fielding error by Turner with two outs.
Turner
hit a solo blast in the 7th.
Lagares
had an RBI single in the 7th, driving in Wilmer Flores, who had led
off the inning with a single.
Granderson
had an RBI triple in the 8th, scoring Wright from 1B – he had led
off the inning with a single. (Video)
Mejia
came in for the save in the 9th. (Video)
Storylines:
∂eGrom a hit!
Jacob
∂eGrom is 0-2 as a pitcher after getting three total runs of support over his
first two starts, but he’s 2-3 with a sac bunt as a hitter so far. Cool stuff,
but the real story has been his pitching, as he’s only allowed four runs on
eight hits through 13 IP. He was burned by the long ball against the Dodgers,
but the three homeruns he gave up were more than he gave up in the offense
friendly PCL this year (38.1 IP, 2 HR allowed). Obviously the majors are less
forgiving, but it’s also just one start. In the minors, his highest HR/9 total
was 0.75 over 12 IP. More significantly, he allowed eight combined homeruns
over 114 IP the past year for Las Vegas (0.63 HR/9).
‘Soup-er’ Campbell
to play 2B and SS?
Don’t
expect to see him starting at either position anytime soon, as it sounded like
Terry would want to see how he looks in out there in a blowout first. Before
2014, Campbell had 2 chances at 2B and 0 at SS. In 2014, he had 13 starts at 2B
and 2 at SS, and he was removed after seven innings in the first start at SS.
It was only two games, but he had a rough time out there, and I have really low
expectations if he is used there in game.
“[Playing SS is] just fielding a groundball and throwing it
to first,” said Campbell.
If
it’s really that easy, how come more guys aren’t tried there? I hate to sound
negative, because I would love for him to be another option for the Mets at SS,
just trying to be realistic. (I would also love to be proven wrong)
Gee to rehab soon?
Depending
on how things go during a side session Friday, Dillon Gee may be ready for a
rehab appearance either Sunday or Monday. He would likely pitch for St. Lucie
or Binghamton to limit his travels, so I likely won’t be able to cover the appearance.
His return should be a boost to the rotation, as he’s been one of the top
pitchers in baseball the past year. The Mets may also look to move one of
Montero or ∂eGrom to the pen, as ∂eGrom was initially slated for the pen
(supposedly, though technically the Mets could have known about Gee and just
been quiet about it), but he has been the more impressive starter so far. If
Gee does make a rehab start Sunday/Monday, he could be ready to pitch in the
Phillies series.
Travis ∂’Arnaud
cleared for baseball activities
I’ve
yet to see it reported when he would be ready to play, but he is going back to
the old style catchers mask and helmet, as this isn’t his first concussion with
the hockey helmet. The Mets should get him in some rehab games as a test first,
so it’ll still be some time before he’s back to the Mets.
Harvey in 2014?
He
would like to make 6-7 starts this season. We’re all rooting for you to get
back quick Mr. Harvey; we just don’t want you to compromise the recovery in
order to do so. I’m not really worried about that though, as Harvey seems like
the type of guy who takes his health seriously.
Bullpen
A
mixed performance from the bullpen in this series, but they weren’t the biggest
problem.
9.2 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 6 SO (4.66
