Recap:
Apparently,
the 51s have just been taking in sunlight the past few games, as they unleashed an
offensive attack at 200+% power Thursday night, en route to a 19 run explosion.
The win puts the 51s at 20-8 on the season and gives them a split in the 4 game
series against Reno – it also puts them at 5-0 on Thursdays, which happens to
be $1 beer night at Cashman Field, for whatever that’s worth. The 19 runs is
their second highest total on the season (21, April 22 vs. El Paso), and the 21
hits matches their season high (also from that night), but this is by far their
biggest margin of victory on the season. Potential Mets SS option Wilmer Flores
did not start for the third time in the four games since his hand injury – when
he did start, it was at 1B because of his throwing limitations – but struck out
looking during a pinch hit appearance in the 7th. Cesar Puello was
back in the lineup for the 51s, playing LF and batting 8th, and went
1-5 at the plate with a run scored, an RBI and a strikeout.
Starter Jacob ∂eGrom looked very
strong through the first four innings, having allowed only two doubles against
six groundouts and four strikeouts on 63 pitches. However, he threw 21 pitches
in the top of that 4th inning, and then the 51s went down 1-2-3 on
only 12 pitches in the bottom of the inning, so he was perhaps tiring when he
came out for the 5th. He gave up three hard balls to lead off the
inning, including a double to Aaron Cunningham on a liner that one-hopped the
wall in CF and, luckily, an out, before walking the Aces relief pitcher Derek
Eitel on four pitches. After a visit to the mound from the pitching coach Tom
Signore, ∂eGrom would recover to get Didi Gregorius on a pop out to shallow RF,
and the struck out Trent Oeltjen on three pitches. He would then retire only
one of the three Reno batters he faced in the 6th inning, when he
was replaced with Miguel Socolovich with a runner on second and one run already
in. Overall, it was a very good start from ∂eGrom, as he only allowed one run
off six hits and a walk 5.1 IP, with five strikeouts. However, he did give up
four doubles and needed 94 pitches to get through 5.1 IP. I was ready to get on
him for not going deeper into games this season, as he’s completed six innings
only two out of six starts now, but this was only his second start with 90+
pitches – though he hasn’t managed 6 IP in either – as he’s been limited to (in
order): 76 pitches (57 strikes) over 6 IP, 85 pitches (53 strikes) over 5 IP,
88 pitches (59 strikes) over 7 IP, 75 pitches (46 strikes) over 5 IP, and 91pitches (63 strikes) over 5 IP. In addition to his fine pitching, ∂eGrom had an
RBI ground rule double as part of a six run rally in the 3rd (check
out my play-by-play below for specific details on interesting plays).
Speaking of
offensive rallies, the big story of the night was obviously the 51s offense,
which rallied to put crooked numbers on the scoreboard in four different
innings. The 1st and 3rd inning rallies were aided by a
combined 3 errors, 2 of which were committed by a former Mets homegrown player
at 3B for Reno – I’d tell you his name, but you probably wouldn’t remember
‘Who?’ anyway. By the end of the 8th inning rally, the Aces had
trotted out their catcher Blake Lalli to throw the ball over the plate until
the 51s made one final out, which would come on a ball that Zach Lutz drove out
to pretty deep CF. The 6th inning scoring was charged by a couple of
no-doubter homeruns of the bats of Zach Lutz and then Taylor Teagarden, who
provided the 2-run HR.
Lutz was the hero
of the night, as he fell just a triple shy of the cycle and contributed a hit
in every inning the 51s scored. Andrew Brown and Matt ∂en Dekker combined with
Lutz to go 11-17 from the plate, with nine runs scored, three doubles, two home
runs, eight runs batted in and two strikeouts. The top of the lineup also had
an important impact on this game, as Anthony Seratelli and Eric Campbell combined
to go 6-11 from the plate, with four runs scored, three doubles, a walk, two
runs batted in and two strikeouts.
Looking ahead,
the 51s will head to Tacoma for a four game weekend wraparound series against
the Rainiers. Logan Verrett is scheduled to pitch for the 51s, with a 10:05 PM
ET start time scheduled. Verrett will be looking to bounce back from a loss
against the Rainiers in his last start this past Sunday, when he gave up five
runs (three earned) off seven hits, including a homerun, and a walk. The 51s
won the other three games in that series behind their Big Starting Three, and
will be looking to build upon their AAA-best start to the 2014 season.
