Recap

The 51s rallied for two runs in the 9th to walk off with a win Tuesday afternoon and complete the series sweep of Albuqerque. Aside from a string of 6 batters in the 2nd, starter Tyler Pill was at his AAA best, piling up a high number of groundouts and strikeouts with a good fastball/breaking ball combo. The 51s lineup was almost back to full strength, and that was more than enough to over come the big hole Pill left them in early, as they slowly chipped away throughout the game. The Las Vegas bullpen took over for Pill in the 7th and continued it’s early dominance with 3 nearly perfect innings. The strong effort from the pen left the 51s just close enough for Wilfredo Tovar to be the surprise hero, as he’d drive home both 9th inning runs with a dunker that landed in front of a diving LFer and bounced around just long enough for the speedy Kyle Johnson to score from 1B.
Pill came out looking as sharp as he has with Las Vegas, striking out 3 of the first 4 batters before the trouble started. The next six batters went: groundball single to LF, walk, HR, HR, single squeaked through into RF, one hopper into LF. At this point, Frank Viola came out to talk to Pill and suddenly everything was OK. The first homerun just got over the big wall in left center field, but the second blast was a no-doubter. After the visit from Viola, Pill would retire 10 of the next 11 batters, with the only batter reaching on a walk, but erased off the base paths on a double play. Wilin Rosario greeted Pill with a hard-hit double in the 6th to break the streak and put Pill in trouble. Pill was one strike away from escaping the jam unscathed, but Angelys Nina lined a single into CF to make it a 5-3 deficit. You can’t ignore the big inning that the Isotopes had off of Pill in the 2nd, but I think the way he started, and then the way he finished, were both more important results from today’s outing. He showed that he has a chance to survive the tough PCL, and that he can make necessary corrections during a start when something is not working, both of which should help build his confidence moving forward. It wasn’t quite as successful as the start he made for the B-Mets exactly one year earlier, but just like in that start, I’m excited to see how he follows this up.
John Church gave the 51s two perfect innings and deserves a shout out for the job he’s done lately. He got charged for 3 runs over 2+ IP in his previous outing against Reno, but he was perfect over the first 2, and then pushed to go 3 for the first time since last June. I don’t want to sound like I’m making excuses for these pitchers, but it’s hard to blame a guy who was tired and isn’t used to going out to the mound three straight innings – it’s not just the pitch count, but also all the resting in the dugout while the team hits. Church has looked as sharp as I’ve seen him the past 10 days, relying mostly on an improved slider to induce a lot of groundballs. Considering the Mets sent him to Binghamton out of camp, it’s clear that he’s low on their relief depth chart, but it’s hard for me not to root for a 23rd round pick who has slowly worked his way up the Mets organization since being picked in the 2009 draft.
Dilson Herrera and Alex Castellanos have been insanely hot the past two weeks, and they were the driving forces behind the run in the 3rd (RBI double from Dilson), both runs in the 5th (2R-HR from Castellanos), and the run in the 7th (leadoff single from Dilson, who came around to score). After starting 0-14 against RHP (with a HBP), Dilson is 14-36 with 6 doubles and a walk (.389/.405/.556) – so much for those concerns about him hitting RHP’s.
The 51s are off Wednesday, but host Reno for four this weekend, with Steven Matz scheduled to take the ball in the opener Thursday at 10:05 PM.
