Recap:

Scarlyn Reyes was one pitch away from getting out of big jam in the 1st inning Tuesday night, but Codey McElroy came through for Rome with a big two-run double that turned out to be the only runs of a second straight rain-shortened game. Reyes really settled down after that, only allowing a single and a walk over his next three innings of work. Lefty Alberto Baldonado took over for Reyes in the 5th and was wildly effective over his 2.1 IP for Savannah, but had to be bailed out by Shane Bay when he got into trouble in the 7th. As good as the Gnats pitching was after the 1st, the Rome pitching was even better from the start, as their starter Max Povse only allowed a couple of singles over his 5 innings of work. They had managed two base runners off reliever Zach Quintana in the 8th (with a double play grounder in between them), but the rain was falling too hard for them to finish the inning, so the game ended with Patrick Biondi on 2B after his double. The Sand Gnats rotation turns back to opening day starter Corey Oswalt for the rubber match Wednesday afternoon at 1 PM, and then the Gnats finally return home for their home opener.

Pitching Coverage

Scarlyn Reyes

Reyes needed 27 pitches to get through the 1st, but appeared to settle in after that. Despite the wild 1st, he nearly got through the inning unscathed, but he couldn’t get a 1-0 pitch in enough and McElroy made him pay. Check out his two strikeouts below, he recorded both in the 4th inning.

Alberto Baldonado

Baldonado ran into trouble in the 5th and 7th innings, but he looked very sharp in the 6th, when he recorded two of his four strikeouts in the game. It’s not clear if his role is full-time reliever or if he’s more of a piggyback starter at this point. He’s been a piggyback starter in the past, and he stayed in for 46 pitches after Reyes last only 69 pitches Tuesday night. Check out his four strikeouts below.
